U.S. Deploys USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East
The United States is deploying the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit toward the Middle East, adding thousands of U.S. Marines and significant air and naval capabilities to the region amid heightened tensions with Iran.
The deployment will provide U.S. military commanders with additional operational options, including amphibious assaults, maritime security missions and potential ground operations, depending on the circumstances and decisions made by U.S. leadership.
However, the deployment does not confirm that President Donald Trump has ordered a ground invasion of Iran. The movement of amphibious forces expands the military options available to Washington, but any decision to launch a ground operation would depend on further orders from the U.S. administration.
The USS Makin Island and its accompanying forces are designed to support a range of missions, including transporting Marines, conducting amphibious operations and providing aviation support.
The latest deployment comes as Washington continues to strengthen its military presence in the Middle East while tensions with Tehran remain high.
The buildup is being closely monitored for signs of a further escalation, although the deployment alone does not establish that a ground offensive against Iran is imminent.
