U.S. Marine Arrested in Japan Over Woman’s Death in Naha Hotel
A U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa has been arrested on suspicion of robbery murder after a local woman was found dead in a Naha hotel room. The case has sparked outrage in Japan and renewed tensions over the American military presence on the island.
What we know so far:
Suspect: 20 year old Marine Devin Jacob Ballard, stationed at MCAS Futenma
Victim: 39 year old Anna Yagi, a Naha resident
Cause of death: Suffocation from pressure on her neck
Arrest: Made less than 24 hours after the victim was found unresponsive early Saturday, October 3
Evidence: CCTV allegedly showed a man matching Ballard’s description entering the room with the woman and leaving with her belongings
Denial: Ballard has denied the allegations, telling authorities “I don’t know
Japan’s response:
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime “extremely brutal and heinous,” and Japan lodged a strong protest with the U.S., demanding tighter discipline of American forces. Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki said the incident brings “new anxiety” to residents living alongside military bases.
U.S. response:
The Marine Corps says it takes the allegations “very seriously” and is cooperating fully. U.S. Ambassador George Glass expressed “deep regret” to Japanese authorities.
This case highlights long standing friction in Okinawa, which hosts the majority of U.S. military facilities in Japan.
