BREAKING: U.S. M foves Forward with Saudi Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to submit a landmark civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia to Congress, a move that could significantly reshape energy and strategic relations in the Middle East.
The proposed deal, known as the “123 Agreement,” would allow Saudi Arabia to develop its civilian nuclear energy program, including the ability to enrich uranium on its own territory. According to reports, the agreement does not include some of the stricter restrictions and safeguards that have been applied in previous U.S. nuclear cooperation agreements to limit the risk of nuclear weapons development.
The framework was formally signed by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, following a preliminary agreement reached in Riyadh last year.
Supporters of the agreement argue that it will help Saudi Arabia diversify its energy sector, reduce dependence on oil, and strengthen the long-standing strategic partnership between Washington and Riyadh.
Critics, however, have expressed concern that permitting domestic uranium enrichment without tighter non-proliferation conditions could increase regional security risks and potentially fuel a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
The agreement will now undergo congressional review before it can take effect. If approved, it would mark one of the most significant U.S.-Saudi nuclear cooperation initiatives in recent years.
