U.S. Nearly Launched Operation Against Chinese Ship After AI-Generated Intelligence Error CNN
The United States reportedly came close to taking military action against a Chinese vessel in the Middle East this spring, during the Iran war, after an intelligence report falsely identified the ship as carrying components linked to nuclear weapons, according to CNN.
The report was reportedly produced using AI-generated intelligence. A Special Operations Command analyst allegedly used a chatbot to combine open-source information with classified signals intelligence, then used AI again to format the findings into a standard intelligence report that was circulated within the U.S. military.
According to CNN, the intelligence triggered preparations for a potential operation, with armed U.S. personnel preparing to board the vessel and military aircraft already airborne.
Officials reportedly discovered before the operation proceeded that the intelligence assessment had been generated with the assistance of a chatbot and was inaccurate.
The incident highlights the risks of using generative AI to process and disseminate intelligence, particularly when flawed information can rapidly move through military command structures and contribute to potentially dangerous decisions.
