TOORO THRONE BOMBSHELL: Prince George Desmond Kamurasi REJECTS Crown After Winning Succession Vote
The drama surrounding the Tooro throne has taken yet another twist after Prince George Desmond Kamurasi reportedly declined the crown despite emerging as the preferred candidate of a royal succession committee.
Rev. Fr. Charles Oyo Amooti, a Babiito royal clan member involved in succession communications, reportedly confirmed Kamurasi’s decision while speaking to journalists at Karuziika Royal Palace.
The 36-year-old UK-based royal, a cousin of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV and a non-league footballer, reportedly received 15 votes from the 21-member committee, placing him ahead of other candidates considered for the throne.
However, Kamurasi is said to have rejected the position, citing his family commitments and established life in the United Kingdom.
His reported decision comes as the battle over King Oyo’s successor continues to divide opinion within the Tooro royal establishment.
Babiito clan elders have selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama, but some members of the royal family have challenged the move, pointing to King Oyo’s reported 2022 will, which is said to name his biological son as the primary heir.
The reported will is also said to provide for alternative successors, including Prince Komwiswa Yoweri, should the young prince be unable to assume the throne.
With King Oyo’s burial scheduled for September 12, pressure is mounting for the succession dispute to be put aside.
Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki have both called for calm, urging the different sides to pause the succession battle and give the late King Oyo a dignified final farewell.
