UK Troops Authorized to Fire Back at Russian Forces if Attacked During Future Ukraine Deployment

British troops will be permitted to open fire in self-defense if attacked by Russian forces while serving in a proposed multinational military mission in Ukraine, Western officials have confirmed.

The force, known as the Multinational Force-Ukraine (MNF-U), is being jointly developed by Britain and France as part of a wider coalition of countries preparing to support Ukraine’s security after a potential peace agreement.

The reported rules of engagement would allow British personnel to return fire if directly attacked, raising the possibility of a direct military confrontation between British and Russian forces if the mission is ever deployed.

The preparations are moving ahead despite the absence of a peace agreement. Around 2,800 military personnel from 11 countries are scheduled to participate in Exercise Koalicja in Poland from November 9 to 22, including approximately 300 British troops.

The exercise will rehearse the deployment, protection and supply of multinational forces, as well as plans to support Ukraine’s military, secure its airspace and help restore safe commercial shipping routes.

The British government has stressed that the MNF-U is not a NATO mission and would only enter Ukraine after hostilities have ended and at the request of the Ukrainian government. It would not conduct traditional peacekeeping or ceasefire-monitoring operations.

However, the prospect of deploying Western troops remains highly uncertain, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly opposed the presence of NATO member states’ forces in Ukraine.

The preparations highlight how Britain and its European allies are planning for a postwar security arrangement while the conflict between Russia and Ukraine remains unresolved.
