UKRAINE ACQUIRES BRITAIN’S “STONE CLOAK” TECHNOLOGY—A MAJOR BOOST FOR ITS DRONE WAR
Ukraine is set to take another major step in the evolution of its drone fleet.
During President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United Kingdom, Britain is expected to transfer the intellectual property rights to its Stone Cloak electronic warfare system, allowing Ukraine to manufacture, modify, and further develop the technology on its own.
At first glance, the Stone Cloak doesn’t look particularly remarkable.
Roughly the size of a laptop or tablet, the compact electronic warfare device is designed to be mounted directly onto drones. Its purpose is simple but incredibly important: to make Ukrainian drones far more difficult for Russian air defenses and electronic warfare systems to detect, track, and engage.
Think of it as an electronic cloak rather than a physical one.
Instead of making a drone invisible, Stone Cloak reduces its electronic signature and interferes with the enemy’s ability to locate or target it, improving the drone’s chances of reaching its objective. While the exact technical details remain classified, its range, operating frequencies, and power output have deliberately not been disclosed.
Britain has already supplied thousands of Stone Cloak units to Ukraine, where they have been used to support long-range strike operations. The transfer of intellectual property is an even bigger development because Ukraine will no longer depend solely on foreign deliveries. Ukrainian engineers will now be able to produce the systems domestically, integrate them into new drone designs, and adapt them as Russian electronic warfare evolves.
That matters because the drone war has become a technological arms race.
Every month, Russia improves its radar, jammers, and detection systems. Every month, Ukraine develops new ways to overcome them. Success no longer depends only on building more drones—it depends on building smarter drones that can survive deep inside contested airspace.
The transfer also reflects a broader shift in Western support.
Rather than simply providing finished equipment, allies are increasingly sharing technology and industrial know-how, enabling Ukraine to build its own defense industry at scale. That makes Ukraine more resilient and less dependent on external supply chains over the long term.
Stone Cloak is more than another piece of military equipment. It represents something even more valuable: the ability for Ukraine to innovate independently, manufacture at home, and stay one step ahead in the rapidly evolving battle for control of the skies.
