UKRAINE FACES FURTHER TERRITORIAL LOSSES AS RUSSIA CONTINUES ITS ADVANCE
Ukraine is facing renewed pressure on the battlefield as Russian forces continue their offensive operations, with Luhansk and Donetsk remaining among the most heavily contested areas of the war.
Russia has claimed full control of Luhansk Oblast and is continuing its advance toward the remaining Ukrainian-held parts of Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian forces are maintaining defensive positions in an effort to prevent Russian troops from capturing additional territory.
Russia currently controls roughly 20% of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory, according to widely cited battlefield assessments. Moscow’s territorial gains have come at an enormous human and material cost, while Ukraine has continued conducting long-range strikes against Russian military targets, energy infrastructure and oil facilities far beyond the front line.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected the idea of formally surrendering Ukrainian territory as part of a peace agreement. Kyiv maintains that any settlement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, has demanded that Ukraine withdraw from the remaining Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk and accept restrictions on its future military alliances, including abandoning its ambitions for NATO membership.
The central question is becoming increasingly difficult for Kyiv: How long can Ukraine continue the war without risking further territorial losses?
While President Zelenskyy remains confident that Ukraine can ultimately prevail, continued Russian advances could make future negotiations even more difficult and potentially leave Kyiv facing greater territorial concessions.
For that reason, supporters of negotiations argue that Ukraine should pursue a diplomatic settlement before the battlefield situation deteriorates further. Kyiv, however, has maintained that peace cannot come at the price of surrendering Ukrainian territory under Russian pressure.
The war therefore remains locked between two fundamentally different positions: Russia demanding territorial and strategic concessions, and Ukraine insisting that its sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be traded away.
