Ukraine giving up NATO membership and restarting Nord Stream: The Economist outlines new U.S. peace plan

Ukrainian officials have not yet received all the details of the proposals, but the broad outlines are already known, according to The Economist.

The plan reportedly envisages a demilitarized zone in Donbas. Ukraine would be offered an investment package and EU membership in exchange for abandoning its aspirations to join NATO.

Russia, meanwhile, would be offered business deals with the United States, sanctions relief, and political normalization.

A new concession to Putin would involve resuming Russian gas sales to Europe and restarting the Nord Stream pipeline.

The Economist emphasizes that Washington has no authority to make such decisions on Europe’s behalf and that the gas proposal conflicts with EU legislation.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials fear that the Americans could conclude business deals favorable to Russia even before the war ends.
