Ukraine Says It Has Used FP-7 “Pelican” Ballistic Missile in Combat for the First Time
Ukraine has announced the first combat use of the FP-7 “Pelican” ballistic missile, a domestically produced weapon developed by Ukrainian defense company Fire Point.
The missile is reportedly designed as a lower-cost alternative to the U.S.-made ATACMS, with a stated range of around 200 kilometers, a warhead weighing up to 150 kg, and a reported top speed of approximately Mach 4.4.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the FP-7 was among the weapons used in recent strikes in the Moscow region, including attacks targeting the Kapotnya oil refinery.
However, Moscow lies beyond the publicly stated 200-kilometer range of the FP-7. This suggests that the Pelican may have been used against targets closer to Ukraine, while long-range Ukrainian drones were responsible for striking the refinery itself.
The development marks another step in Ukraine’s effort to expand its domestically produced long-range strike capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign-supplied missile systems.
