Ukraine Strikes Russian Strategic Bombers
Two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers have reportedly been heavily damaged at the Engels-2 airbase in Russia’s Saratov region within six weeks, according to The Telegraph.
In late August, a Ukrainian drone reportedly traveled nearly 800 kilometers across Russian territory before striking a Tu-95. Satellite imagery reportedly showed significant damage to the aircraft’s right wing. Another Tu-95 was reportedly hit at the same base in July.
The losses are particularly significant for Moscow. Alongside the Tu-160, the Tu-95 is one of Russia’s primary strategic bombers capable of launching Kh-101 cruise missiles against Ukraine. Russia has not produced new Tu-95 aircraft since 1992, making replacement difficult.
Experts say the strikes highlight the growing reach of Ukraine’s long-range drone capabilities and the challenges facing Russia’s air defenses across its vast territory.
Following the 2025 Operation Spiderweb, Kyiv appears to be pursuing a strategy of attrition, gradually targeting a strategic bomber fleet that Moscow cannot easily replenish.
For Russia, every bomber damaged or destroyed potentially reduces both its ability to conduct long-range strikes against Ukraine and its broader strategic aviation capability.
