Understanding the DF-15A, China’s Short-Range Ballistic Missile
The DF-15A, also known as the CSS-6 Mod 1, is a Chinese-developed short-range ballistic missile derived from the DF-15 family. Designed as a road-mobile system, the missile can be transported and launched from a mobile Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL), allowing operators to rapidly relocate launch positions.
The missile uses a single-stage solid-fuel rocket motor and is approximately 9.1 meters long, around 1 meter in diameter and weighs roughly 6.2–6.5 tonnes. The DF-15A is believed to have a range of up to approximately 900 kilometers, compared with around 600 kilometers for the original DF-15 variant.
The DF-15A features an improved guidance system designed to provide significantly greater accuracy than earlier versions. Open-source assessments have attributed accuracy in the range of several tens of meters CEP to some variants, although exact performance figures remain classified.
The missile can carry a warhead weighing roughly 500–600 kilograms, with the DF-15 family designed to accommodate different conventional warhead configurations. The exact warhead types available to individual operators are not fully disclose
Its combination of mobility, solid-fuel propulsion, relatively long range for a short-range ballistic missile and improved accuracy makes the DF-15A suitable for striking military bases, command centers, infrastructure and other high-value targets within its range
China is the original developer and principal known operator of the DF-15 family, which entered Chinese service in the late 1980s. Information regarding foreign operators is more limited and should be distinguished between confirmed users and countries reported or assessed to possess the system
The discovery of missile debris in Yemen’s Marib Governorate has recently drawn attention because open-source analysts have assessed that the wreckage is consistent with a DF-15A. Some reports have linked the missile to Saudi Arabia, which has previously been associated with Chinese ballistic missile technology.
However, the identity of the operator and the force that launched the missile have not been officially confirmed. If the DF-15A identification and Saudi connection are eventually verified, the incident could provide important new evidence about the use of Chinese ballistic missile technology in the Yemen conflict and offer rare insight into Saudi Arabia’s ballistic missile capabilities.
