🇿🇲 LIVE | UNZA Students March to State House
Thousands of students have begun marching from the University of Zambia’s Monk Square to State House, where they are expected to present their appreciation to President Hakainde Hichilema over what they describe as the resolution of the institution’s long-standing sanitation crisis.
The students are also expected to formally lobby Government to increase the annual accommodation allowance from the current K4,800 to K5,800, arguing that rising living costs have made it increasingly difficult to secure accommodation around the university.
The procession has transformed parts of the university campus into a sea of white T-shirts, with students carrying placards, chanting slogans and waving Zambian flags as they make their way towards the city centre. Security officers are monitoring the march, while motorists along the route are experiencing temporary disruptions.
The demonstration comes at a politically significant moment, less than two weeks before Zambia heads to the polls on August 13. While the students describe the march as one of appreciation and advocacy, it also places higher education and student welfare back at the centre of the national conversation during the final stretch of the election campaign.
