UPND Calls For International Scrutiny Of Alleged Military Weapons Recoveries

UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe says the United Party for National Development (UPND) intends to write to the European Union (EU), African Union

on (AU), Southern African Development Community (SADC) and other international observers to raise concerns over the alleged recovery of military-grade weapons from individuals linked to opposition political activities.

Mr Simuuwe says the UPND will also seek the attention of relevant international justice institutions over what he described as serious allegations that individuals were allegedly preparing to use violence to undermine Zambia’s peace and constitutional order.

He said the reported recovery of restricted military weapons and ammunition should be treated as a matter of serious concern, particularly in the aftermath of the August 13 General Elections.

Mr Simuuwe said international observers who monitored the elections should be made aware of the allegations and encouraged to follow developments as security agencies investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported weapons recoveries and arrests.

He said the UPND believes that any attempt to use armed violence to influence the outcome of an election or gain political power would constitute a serious threat to Zambia’s democracy and the safety of citizens.

Mr Simuuwe said the party would therefore seek greater international scrutiny of the allegations, while allowing security agencies and the courts to establish the facts through lawful investigations and due process.

He stressed that the UPND’s position is that political power must only be attained through constitutional and democratic means, and not through violence, intimidation or the use of weapons.

Mr Simuuwe further called on international observers and diplomatic missions to pay close attention to the security situation as the Electoral Commission of Zambia continues with the electoral process.

He said the UPND remains committed to peace and urged citizens to remain calm while authorities investigate the reported incidents and ensure that anyone found to have broken the law is held accountable through the appropriate legal processes.
