UPND MEMBER CALLS FOR RESPECT TO THE FIRST FAMILY

Lusaka, Zambia | 13 October 2026

UPND member Harriet Mutinta Matongo has called for greater respect and responsibility in Zambia’s political discourse following attacks on the first family by known bloggers.

Matongo has emphasised that politics can be conducted without resorting to personal insults or disrespect towards the First Family.

She has maintained that political differences should be addressed through constructive debate rather than language that undermines dignity and mutual respect.

She has further stressed the importance of respecting the Office of the President, noting that political criticism should be exercised responsibly and with due regard for the institution.

This follows comments attributed to known social media blogger regarding President Hakainde Hichilema’s gesture of carrying the First Lady’s shoes, alongside other personal remarks directed at the presidential couple.

“While freedom of expression remains an important democratic principle, public debate benefits from a clear distinction between legitimate criticism and personal attacks,” Mutinta said.

Matongo’s message highlights the need for political maturity, civility and respect for national institutions, even amid differing political opinions.
