UPND SECRETARIAT MEETS PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION MPs, SETS OUT EXPECTATIONS FOR PARTY AND NATIONAL SERVICE
LUSAKA, SEPTEMBER, 23, 2026 – The United Party for National Development (UPND) Secretariat has met with Members of Parliament elected under the Proportional Representation System to outline expectations regarding party loyalty, parliamentary conduct and their role in supporting the national development agenda.
The meeting led by UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda and National Chairperson Collins Maoma, engaged the newly elected Members of Parliament on the responsibilities that come with their positions and as part of the party’s effort to strengthen coordination, discipline and accountability as the new Parliament takes shape.
Speaking after the meeting, UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe said the engagement was intended to ensure that the Members of Parliament clearly understood both their responsibilities to the party and the citizens they have been entrusted to represent.
Mr Simuuwe said the MPs were reminded of the importance of loyalty to the party, adherence to the UPND Constitution and observance of the party’s disciplinary regulations.
“The meeting was important because these Members of Parliament must understand that their election is not simply about occupying seats in Parliament. It comes with responsibilities to the party, to Government and, most importantly, to the Zambian people who have entrusted them with this responsibility,” Mr Simuuwe said.
He said the MPs had also been encouraged to develop and work within a clear manifesto that would guide their parliamentary engagement and enable them to articulate the issues affecting the people they represent.
Mr Simuuwe said the Secretariat had further advised the MPs to familiarise themselves with and formally align their conduct with the relevant Parliamentary and Ministerial Codes of Conduct, in addition to observing the internal rules and disciplinary framework of the party.
He said the MPs were expected to support Government legislation and programmes that advance the development objectives of the administration, including the Grow Zambia Agenda.
Mr Simuuwe said the MPs had also been encouraged to contribute resources and other forms of support to the party while remaining connected to communities and citizens who supported the UPND and its candidates.
The UPND Media Director said the Secretariat had also assured the MPs that its doors would remain open to concerns, challenges and issues arising from their interactions with citizens and other stakeholders.
Mr Simuuwe further disclosed that the MPs had been guided to work closely with the Government’s Chief Whip, who will serve as the focal point for coordination and interaction between the party and Government.
