US DEMOCRATS TURN UP THE PRESSURE ON TRUMP, WARNING THAT SOUTH AFRICA SHOULD BE RESTORED TO AGOA AS CONGRESSIONAL OPPOSITION GROWS AGAINST THE DECISION TO REMOVE ITS TRADE BENEFITS!
President Donald Trump’s decision to remove South Africa from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is facing growing criticism from senior Democratic lawmakers in the United States Congress.
Two influential Democrats, Representative Gregory Meeks, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, have raised concerns about the consequences of excluding South Africa from the preferential trade programme.
They warn that the decision could weaken American economic interests, disrupt established supply chains and create opportunities for China to strengthen its economic influence in Africa.
Representative Richard Neal, the leading Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, has also criticised the move, describing it as a trade decision driven by political grievances. He is calling for an explanation and a clear route towards restoring South Africa’s trade benefits.
The lawmakers are pushing for engagement between Washington and Pretoria during the 60-day notice period before the proposed exclusion takes effect on 1 January 2027.
Their intervention could increase pressure on the Trump administration to reconsider its position and open negotiations with South Africa.
For South Africa, AGOA access matters because it provides eligible exports with preferential access to the American market, supporting businesses, jobs and trade.
The big question now is whether pressure from Democrats in Congress will persuade President Trump to reconsider and bring South Africa back into AGOA.
