US used 2,000-pound bomb in strike on Iran’s southern Island – NYT
The United States appears to have used a 2,000-pound bomb in an overnight strike Thursday on a densely populated neighborhood on Iran’s Qeshm Island, the New York Times reported.
An analysis of videos, photographs and satellite imagery by the newspaper and weapons experts found that the crater’s size and munition fragments were consistent with a Mark 84, one of the largest conventional bombs used by the US military.
The location and timing matched US operations in the area, the report said, adding that the evidence raised questions about the intended target and why such a large munition was used on the island, which is located in the Strait of Hormuz off southern Iran.
Following the strike, Iranian officials said the strike hit a residential home, killing a couple and their two-year-old child.
