Washington wants South African leaders to clearly condemn the controversial chant.
3️⃣ LAND EXPROPRIATION
The US opposes land expropriation without compensation. South Africa maintains that its land reform policies must follow the country’s constitutional framework.
4️⃣ BEE REQUIREMENTS
Washington wants South Africa to consider alternatives to certain Black Economic Empowerment ownership rules for American companies.
5️⃣ FOREIGN POLICY
The US wants Pretoria to reconsider its relationships with countries that Washington considers its adversaries.
🇿🇦 WHAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT?
The disagreement could put further pressure on diplomatic relations, trade and investment between the two countries.
South Africa has defended its right to make its own decisions on domestic policy and international relations. Meanwhile, Washington has warned that additional measures could follow if the dispute remains unresolved.
