USS George Washington Reportedly Heads Toward the Middle East
The USS George Washington, one of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, is reportedly moving toward the Middle East, potentially positioning it to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln amid reported concerns over conditions aboard the carrier.
The George Washington, which had been operating in the Indo-Pacific, was reportedly spotted transiting the Strait of Malacca, a key maritime passage connecting the Pacific and Indian oceans. Its movement toward the Indian Ocean could place the carrier on a route toward the Middle East.
The reported deployment comes as concerns have emerged over the mental health and welfare of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Reports from outlets including Navy Times and Stars and Stripes, along with accounts from relatives, have described serious allegations involving depression, suicidal thoughts and other mental-health struggles among members of the crew.
Some accounts have also alleged incidents in which sailors attempted to go overboard, highlighting the severe pressures that can affect personnel serving aboard a deployed aircraft carrier.
