A video showing the final moments of Nigerian national Chika Ibe during a South African Police Service (SAPS) operation has resurfaced on social media, reigniting debate over the circumstances surrounding his death in Bellville, Cape Town.
The incident took place during a police operation targeting suspected drug-related activities. According to SAPS, officers were conducting a search when Ibe allegedly became unresponsive while police were still at the property.
Police say emergency medical services were called and the matter was immediately referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), as required whenever a death occurs during or following police action
However, members of the Nigerian community and some witnesses strongly dispute the police version of events. They allege that Ibe was forcefully restrained by officers and claim excessive force was used before he died.
Videos recorded at the scene have spread widely online, with some people alleging he was suffocated during the arrest. These allegations have not been confirmed by IPID or any court, and the official cause c,of death has not yet been released.
The incident has sparked protests and widespread calls for accountability, with community members demanding a transparent investigation into what happened. The case has also drawn attention in both South Africa and Nigeria, where many are closely following developments.
IPID has confirmed that it is investigating the incident. Investigators are expected to examine witness statements, video footage, police reports, forensic evidence and post-mortem findings before deciding whether any officers acted unlawfully. Until that investigation is completed, the exact circumstances surrounding Chika Ibe’s death remain under official investigation.
