HH CALLS FOR UNITY

By Rosemary Shindola

Lusaka-12 June 2025

President Hakainde Hichilema has addressed the nation in a solemn and heartfelt message following the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

In his national address, the Head of State expressed deep condolences to the bereaved Lungu family, the Patriotic Front (PF) party, and the Zambian people at large.

In a spirit of national solidarity, the Republican President called on Zambians to support the Lungu family and the PF party with compassion and empathy, emphasizing the importance of rising above political divisions.

“My thoughts and prayers remain with the bereaved family and the nation at large during this difficult time,” President Hichilema stated, urging all citizens to embrace peace, love, and unity.

“Political differences do not make us enemies. They reflect our vibrant and dynamic democracy,” he added.

The Head of State appealed to all political parties, including the United Party for National Development (UPND), to rise to the occasion with dignity and mutual respect.

He cautioned against any attempts to politicize the moment or fuel divisions for partisan gain.

“Let compassion guide our actions. Let us not be drawn into provocation or disorder. This is a time to show our shared humanity.”

Highlighting Zambia’s identity as a Christian nation, President Hichilema stressed that lawlessness and disorder have no place in society. He reaffirmed that the country is governed by the rule of law, and any violations would be addressed without fear or favor.

“We are a nation of laws. The law will prevail and be applied fairly to all.”

Calling on the nation to turn to prayer and faith, he encouraged Zambians to seek divine wisdom and guidance in this moment of grief.

“Let love lead us and unity bind us. We must now come together in the spirit of peace and reconciliation.”

President Hichilema concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to serve all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, or background.

“As President, it is my duty to serve every Zambian. This is the time to put aside our differences and work together as one nation.”

The President’s message has been widely interpreted as a call for national healing and cohesion, as the country prepares to bid farewell to one of its former leaders.

  1. Hypocrisy of the highest order. Now you have waken up BaKateeka and realised that the person you denied access to medical treatment once held the highest office in the land. Where was peace and love in your decision denying our late president to fly out of the country for medical treatment ? Your face can tell that what is coming out of your lips, your heart doesn’t even believe. I wish these words you have spoken today where in your heart when your brother the former President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu desperately begged for permission to go for medical treatment abroad. You knew his health Mr President, yet you chose hate and suppressed the heart of love. You denied your brother access to medical treatment even when he offered to use his own resources in 2023. Where is your love for your brother Mr President, where is the unity between you and your predecessor Mr President. And we are told you are an elder in the SDA, and the bible tells us to love our enemy that is if ECL was your enemy. On those occasions, what you demonstrated against your brother the former president Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu was not love Mr President but hate. You knew the nature of his illness, yet you chose hate over love. Who will believe you today when you failed the litmus test when your brother needed you most ? I wish today you can stand in front of the Zambian people with your head high and declare with an open heart that as a nation lead by yourself, you did everything within your powers to support your brother in his sickness. Alas, instead you used his sickness to fight him physically, emotionally, psychologically and mentally to the extend that he made a confession to the Zambian people that “I will die a sad person” And indeed he died a sad person because even when the condition became bad , he had to sneak out of his own country, out of his motherland to go and seek medical attention and unfortunately by the time he managed to sneak out of the country it was too late. What peace are you preaching about Mr President? What love are you preaching about Mr President and what kind of unity do you practice ? We gave you the chance and opportunity to lead us , not because there were no other better people in the land in 2021 to lead us, but God allowed you to take up the mantle of leading this great country called Zambia. After all is said and done , what will you say to the one God who appointed you through the Zambian people ? Your heart and truly your heart knows the answer. May God bless Zambians and May God bless the great land of Zambia. Mourning Bona Fide Zambian in the Diaspora – UK

    • ECL as President, the country borrowed huge money to build Hospitals in Zambia (not SA), what did they put in these hospitals that is only meant for ordinary Zambians? Boss sure, the country is now paying double, the nkongole and also to bring back ECL’s body. Pls leave HH out of this, cancer has no cure currently and it’s not like ECL’s cancer was at stage 1 last year. Let’s stop this unrealistic blame on each other. By the way, you have even brought in the bible, where do you place the verse that says there is time for everything (to be born /die) ? According to you, President HH has the power to stop dearth? Where do you also put the verses that says only God knows your beginning and your end and no one can stop that? Why do you refer to the bible in vain, don’t you know that the same bible says you will be purnished for using the word of God in vain (foolishly)? In this case you are using the word of God in politicking the dearth of ECL.

    • Nondo, are you also sharing the same DNA with Nakachinda, Sean, lubinda and Emmanuel mwamba? Please you should first understand the reality before making assertions. As far as vocal and written records, I have not heard of any statement of hatred from HH against ECL. But ask yourself the following questions?
      1. Who said,”When go through, I SHALL arrest HH and make sure he dies in jail.”
      2. Which commander of the armed forces commanded armed personnel to go and teargas and arrest HH from his house around 02:00hours?
      3. Who called HH, a luccona!
      4. Who signed the current constitution, which talks about the rule of law in terms of citizens alleged to have committed cases of corruption, thievery etc?
      5. What does the law which ECL had signed, about the former president who goes back into active politics, in terms benefits?
Today lubinda is saying HH called ECL kabolala, that’s a big lie. Those statements were coming from his friends, Kambwili ,who called everyone in PF as bapompwe., KBF said the same against ECL, Kalaba cited them corrupt crooks.
Ba nondo, ECL and his team were just too sure to win the 2021elections, but they lost. From that time they have not believed that they are no longer in government. It’s more painful to nakachinda who just tasted the ministerial post for only three months. It’s still painful to mwamba for terminating his foreign job following PF loss. But the most confusing aspect to those making noise is that they don’t have any hope of bouncing back with the death of ECL. All what they want to do is raise calculated lies and confusions in the nation so that everyone can be a loser

  2. Ba Pakomaila from long lift you have written we can see that you’re a PF and your article isn’t balanced. HH is not an Elder in the SDA ,he is just an ordinary member. Are you sure we are not better than 2021 when previously we had cadres who could come and grab your. Cadres in PF had a license to maim anyone at wiii. These aren’t happening today. Now we have peace and less stealing of Government resources.
Did you ever advice ECL on the many wrong things he did when at the helm of power? The gassing, stealing of Government resources, firing of people based on tribal lines? Me I’m still reeling with the effects of being fired by PF.
An per advice last night by the President let’s encourage peace and unity in this great nation. God is the only one judging you and me and everyone in Zambia.
May we and me repent our sins we continue to commit every day .

  3. HH you are great leader who mean well for the country, do not be distracted by these power mongers. We are behind you,Remain strong and forecast.God bless you.

  4. HH you mean well for this country no amount of hypocrisy should distract you. A leader is chosen by God we are with you in prayer. Remain forecast for the betterment of this country. GOD bless you.

  5. @Nondo your writing longer than the article above I think the message from the President is clear this is not the time for politics but time of sorrow and mourning.
