WASHINGTON DEMANDS STRICT RWANDAN COMPLIANCE ON DRC PEACE ACCORDS
The United States has intensified its diplomatic pressure on Rwanda, making it clear that future bilateral relations depend on absolute adherence to regional peace frameworks. During his Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing, U.S. Ambassador-designate to Rwanda Nicholas Checker outlined a hardline policy centered on the full implementation of the U.S.-brokered Washington Accords.
American officials stressed that the landmark agreements between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo require rigorous enforcement. Checker warned lawmakers that Washington will tolerate no backsliding on commitments made to resolve the prolonged crisis in the Great Lakes region, emphasizing that the success of the pact relies entirely on “full and verifiable compliance by all parties”.
The policy demands that the Rwandan government halt any actions deemed destabilizing to the eastern DRC, including military support or cross-border interference. Ensuring absolute transparency within regional mineral supply chains also remains a non-negotiable benchmark for American foreign policy.
While Washington maintains that it values a strong and constructive partnership with Kigali focused on mutual economic growth, compliance with international security covenants is now the definitive test for bilateral cooperation
