The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) says it will not support any constitutional amendments aimed at removing the presidential term limit.
CCZ Secretary General, James Phiri, says the Constitution should be respected adding any plans to amended it must not serve the interests of an individual or political party
His remarks come amid social media debate over proposals relating to the presidential term limit, with various stakeholders expressing divergent views on the matter.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Father Phiri said any proposed constitutional amendments should be made in the best interests of the nation and subjected to broad consultation.
“Looking at what is obtaining now, some individuals want to push the idea of extending the presidential term limit to suit a political party’s wishes, which is not good for the country,” said Father Phiri.
Father Phiri said the Constitution is a fundamental document that provides the framework for governing the country and must therefore be safeguarded.
He said any decision to amend the Constitution should reflect the interests of the Zambian people and follow the appropriate legal and consultative processes.
