“We Stand with Traoré”: Malema Declares Solidarity with Burkina Faso Against Imperialism
Julius Malema did not mince words. The EFF leader stood before supporters and delivered a full-throated defense of Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré, framing him as the standard-bearer of a new generation of African leadership that refuses to bow to Washington.
“America must never tell us what to do,” Malema said. “We stand with Captain Ibrahim Traoré; we stand with Traoré because we know that Traoré stands for the unity of Africa. We are Traoré, and Traoré is all of us” .
The South African opposition leader went further, praising China for standing up to American tariffs and calling Trump “an enemy of himself and all of us” . His words came after Ouagadougou revealed it had thwarted another coup plot and following what Malema described as slander against Traoré in the US Senate .
Malema has repeatedly praised Traoré as a modern symbol of revolutionary leadership, likening him to Thomas Sankara. He highlighted Traoré’s efforts to remove French military presence, challenge neocolonial influence, and assert Burkina Faso’s right to control its own resources
This is not just rhetoric. The EFF has formally saluted the Alliance of Sahel States, calling the confederation treaty “a bold step towards greater integration” and “a monumental shift away from Western control” . Malema has framed the AES as proof that African liberation is achievable in our lifetime
