Western Intelligence Services Warn of Alleged Russian Assassination Plots Targeting European Defense Executives

According to an investigation by the Financial Times, Western intelligence agencies accuse Russia of conducting a campaign of sabotage, intimidation and threats targeting Europe’s defense industry amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Among the reported targets was Armin Papperger, CEO of German defense giant Rheinmetall, who was allegedly the subject of a thwarted assassination plot uncovered with the involvement of U.S. and German intelligence services.

Several other senior figures in Europe’s defense sector are reportedly facing heightened security measures, particularly those involved in manufacturing drones and other military equipment for Ukraine.

The alleged campaign comes as European countries increase defense production and expand military assistance to Kyiv, making defense manufacturers increasingly important to Ukraine’s ability to sustain its war effort.

The allegations further highlight escalating tensions between Moscow and Europe’s defense industry, as Western governments remain concerned about suspected Russian sabotage operations and threats against critical infrastructure.
