UPND Mayoral candidate Chitambala Mwewa has challenged Toonse Pamodzi Alliance running mate Makebi Zulu to explain what will happen to the remains of former President Edgar Lungu if the alliance loses the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
Mwewa says linking the burial of a former Head of State to the outcome of an election is both unthinkable and inhumane.
He has questioned Toonse Pamodzi Alliance’s position that Lungu’s remains would be buried immediately if they win the elections, asking what their plan would be should they lose.
“You cannot just have one plan as a person. They are saying they will bury Edgar Lungu immediately they win elections so that they give him a dignified send-off, according to them. Now, what will happen immediately they lose?” Mwewa asked.
Mwewa further questioned whether the remains would continue to be kept outside Zambia if the alliance loses and later decides to have the former President buried in South Africa.
“Treating a former Head of State’s remains like a gamble is not just inhumane, but it shows a lack of human emotion. If they lose and decide to bury him in South Africa, does that mean all these months they were just keeping the body there for no reason?” Mwewa stated
The debate over the burial of former President Edgar Lungu has remained a highly sensitive and contentious issue in Zambia.
