“WHERE ARE THE DETAINEES?” – CARITAS ZAMBIA DEMANDS
Caritas Zambia has raised alarm over what it describes as increasing allegations of arrests and detentions of citizens, particularly individuals perceived to be politically inclined, by State security agents.
The organisation is demanding that authorities immediately disclose the whereabouts of people taken into custody and ensure that their constitutional rights and due process are respected.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Caritas Zambia said it was particularly concerned about the reported detention of Ambassador Martha Lungu Mwitumwa and her colleague, Hannah Katonoka.
According to Caritas Zambia, the families of the two women have not been informed of where they are being held, creating anxiety and uncertainty among their relatives.
The organisation said its concern was heightened by information that Ambassador Lungu lives with a chronic medical condition and requires regular medication.
Caritas Zambia Executive Director Fr. Dr. Gabriel Mapulanga said authorities must ensure that people suspected of offences are formally charged and presented before the courts without unnecessary delay.
The organisation also called on security agencies to inform families about the whereabouts of detained relatives and facilitate access to them, particularly where medical needs are involved.
Caritas Zambia stressed that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
It further called for the dignity and rights of all Zambians to be respected regardless of political affiliation.
With the August 13 General Election just two days away, Caritas Zambia warned that actions perceived as arbitrary or secretive could fuel unnecessary speculation, mistrust and tension in the country.
The organisation has consequently appealed to security agencies to act professionally, transparently and in accordance with the law, saying the protection of peace, unity and democratic values should remain a collective responsibility.
Caritas Zambia also offered prayers for Ambassador Lungu, her family and other families affected, as well as for Zambia’s leaders and security personnel carrying out their duties.
