WHO IS EVANS HICHILEMA
Mr Hichilema is a career civil servant and currently serves as Assistant Secretary for Muchinga Province, a post he has built a record in over many years, including before his brother became President. He is no political arrival. He has spent his working life inside the machinery of government.
His recent work shows how that machinery runs. In July he urged public service workers in Nakonde District to study the report on the UPND administration’s achievements from 2021 to 2026, and asked officers to explain its contents in languages people understand, such as Namwanga and Bemba.
Getting government information to ordinary citizens in their own languages is a practical skill, and one that is often neglected.
He also comes with a good reputation. He has been described as humble and hardworking, and respectful despite being the President’s brother.
