WHO IS MYKHAILO VASYLYOVYCH DRAPATYI? UKRAINE’S NEW COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF
President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Major General Mykhailo Vasylyovych Drapatyi as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, placing one of Ukraine’s most respected battlefield commanders in charge of leading the country’s military through the next phase of the war.
Unlike many senior officers whose careers began in the Soviet military, Drapatyi belongs to a new generation of Ukrainian commanders shaped by more than a decade of fighting Russia. Since 2014, he has built a reputation as a front-line leader known for decisive action, accountability, and adapting quickly to the realities of modern warfare.
Drapatyi first gained national recognition during the Battle of Mariupol in 2014, where he led an armored breakthrough to reinforce Ukrainian defenders against Russian-backed forces. Throughout the war in the Donbas, he continued to command combat formations in some of the conflict’s most difficult sectors, earning a reputation for leading from the front.
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, Drapatyi played key roles in the defense of Kryvyi Rih, operations that helped liberate parts of Kherson Oblast, and later in stabilizing the Kharkiv front. As commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces and Joint Forces, he became known for encouraging greater use of drones, electronic warfare, modern training, and battlefield innovation.
One of the qualities that has earned Drapatyi widespread respect is his willingness to accept responsibility. Following a deadly Russian strike on a Ukrainian training ground, he publicly stepped down from his command, stating that military leaders must be accountable for failures rather than shift blame elsewhere. That decision reinforced his reputation as a commander who expects accountability from himself as much as from those under his command.
Drapatyi’s appointment also reflects a broader generational shift within Ukraine’s military leadership. Like Kyrylo Budanov, he is part of a new generation of commanders whose reputations were forged during the war with Russia rather than in the Soviet military system. Both are associated with innovation, operational flexibility, and a willingness to challenge traditional command practices, reflecting Ukraine’s continued transition toward a modern, combat-tested military.
His appointment signals more than a change at the top of the Armed Forces. It represents Ukraine’s continued evolution toward a military led by commanders whose experience has been earned on the battlefield and whose focus is on adapting faster than the enemy. As the war enters another critical phase, Drapatyi now carries the responsibility of translating that experience into Ukraine’s next chapter of defense and, ultimately, victory.
