Wicknell Chivayo Helicopter Crash Report Expected By October 30 As Black Box Analysis Continues
Investigators probing the helicopter crash that killed businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife and other occupants are expected to release a preliminary report by October 30, as efforts to establish what happened during the aircraft’s final moments continue.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) is preparing the initial findings following the September 30, 2026, crash at Kudenga Farm in Waddilove, Marondera, Mashonaland East Province.
The report is expected to provide an early account of the investigation, although the full process could take longer as aviation experts examine the wreckage and analyse evidence recovered from the scene.
Black Box Key To Establishing Cause Of Crash
According to NewsHawks, investigators recovered the helicopter’s black box intact, providing an important source of evidence in the ongoing probe.
The device is being analysed to help reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments, including its altitude, speed, weather conditions and radio communications before impact.
International aviation experts have also been brought in to assist with the forensic examination, while the wreckage was transferred to Charles Prince Airport for further investigation.
The findings from these examinations could help investigators establish the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
What Happened At Kudenga Farm?
The Bell 430 helicopter, registration number Z-PED and owned by Valley Seeds Private Limited, crashed at around 5pm on September 30.
Chivayo had been travelling from his rural home in Gandami village, Chivhu, in Chikomba District, towards Harare via Marondera when the aircraft went down.
The crash claimed the lives of everyone aboard, including Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke, her personal aide Sanelisiwe Magagula, and pilots Captain Calvin Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa.
CAAZ Director-General George Mashababe previously said the initial appearance of the crash scene suggested that the helicopter’s tail struck the ground first. Fuel reportedly spilled and ignited after impact, setting fire to the surrounding grass.
However, the final sequence of events and the factors that caused the aircraft to crash remain subject to investigation.
Bad Weather Among The Possible Explanations
Poor weather has emerged as one of the theories surrounding the crash, with speculation that the pilot may have encountered a dark cloud and lost visibility.
Such conditions can contribute to spatial disorientation, a situation in which a pilot becomes unable to accurately determine an aircraft’s position, movement or altitude because the body’s sensory signals provide misleading information.
Spatial disorientation is a recognised hazard in aviation and can have fatal consequences. However, there is no confirmed finding that it caused the Chivayo helicopter crash.
