World Bank warns Zimbabwe against rushing ZiG-only currency transition
The World Bank has cautioned Zimbabwe against rushing its planned transition to a mono-currency system, warning that premature dedollarisation could trigger capital flight and undermine recent economic stabilisation gains.
The warning is contained in the Zimbabwe Growth and Jobs Report, released by the World Bank on September 4, 2026. The report says Zimbabwe’s currency credibility remains fragile and recommends that the dedollarisation process be sequenced in a transparent and market-driven manner.
World Bank Senior Country Economist Victor Steenbergen said Zimbabwe had achieved greater economic stability, but confidence in the local currency remained at an early stage and needed to be further strengthened.
Zimbabwe has set 2030 as the target for transitioning to a mono-currency, with the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) at the centre of the plan.
The World Bank’s warning is not against dedollarisation itself, but against forcing the transition before sufficient confidence and stability in the ZiG have been established.
