XI JINPING IS GOING TO EGYPT AND AMERICA SHOULD BE PAYING ATTENTION
Chinese President Xi Jinping is heading to Cairo for the first time in nearly a decade.
The trip runs from August 30 to September 3. He attends the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan first, then travels to Egypt at President Sisi’s invitation.
The timing and destination are deliberate.
Egypt is the most strategically significant country in North Africa and the Arab world. It controls the Suez Canal, one of the world’s most important trade routes. It is rebuilding its military with Russian nuclear assistance at El Dabaa. It borders Gaza. It has the largest military in Africa. And it has been carefully maintaining relationships with both Washington and Beijing without fully committing to either.
Xi visiting Cairo right now sends a specific message.
As the US-Iran war disrupted Hormuz shipping and pushed global energy markets into chaos, the alternative route through the Suez Canal became even more critical. China is the world’s largest trading nation. Egypt controls the canal. That relationship deserves personal attention at the highest level
China is also competing with America for economic, technological, and strategic influence across West Asia and North Africa. Egypt receives American military aid. Egypt is also building infrastructure with Chinese investment. Cairo is doing exactly what Beijing wants to encourage. Taking money and partnerships from multiple directions without exclusive allegiance to Washington.
Xi’s visit reinforces that model. You do not have to choose between China and America. China will work with you regardless.
Every African leader watching this visit is seeing a template for managing great power competition to their own advantage.
The question is whether African governments use that leverage strategically or just collect investment from both sides without building real sovereignty
