Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi-owned commercial vessels, Layla and Espelia, near the Saudi coastal city of Al-Shaqiq, marking what analysts describe as a significant escalation in the conflict and the first major strike close to Saudi territorial waters rather than in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
According to Houthi statements, the operation involved a combination of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting the vessels near Saudi Arabia’s western coastline. The group said the attack was intended to enforce its declared maritime blockade and demonstrate that it can strike targets approaching or operating near key Saudi ports.
Unlike previous maritime incidents centered around the Bab al-Mandab Strait or the wider Red Sea shipping lanes, the reported attack occurred much closer to Saudi territory, raising concerns about the security of the Kingdom’s critical port infrastructure and commercial shipping routes.
Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the reported attacks, describing them as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional stability and maritime security. Riyadh vowed retaliation and called on Arab nations to jointly condemn the incident, warning that attacks on commercial shipping and critical infrastructure pose a serious threat to the security of the region and the wider Islamic world.
In its response, the Houthi movement declared that as long as Yemen’s ports and airports remain restricted, Saudi Arabia should not expect its own ports and maritime facilities to operate normally. The group said it would continue military operations until what it described as the blockade on Yemen is lifted.
If confirmed, the attacks would represent a significant expansion of the Houthis’ operational reach and could further increase tensions in the Red Sea region, threatening global shipping, energy supplies, and regional security. Saudi authorities have indicated that further measures may be taken in response, while international observers are closely monitoring developments amid fears of a broader regional escalation.
