Yuyi and six others granted K200,000 bail in copper case
Former Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mwala Yuyi and six co-accused have been granted bail after appearing before the Mufulira Magistrate Court on a new charge of fraudulently dealing in metals.
Copperbelt, 9 September – Yuyi, who was previously arrested and dismissed from his position over allegations of theft by a public servant, appeared in court alongside Allan Mukale, Patrick Muti, Boniface Nchimunya, Edward Banda, Obrian Chipunza and Daniel Makina.
The seven were each granted bail of K200,000 in their own recognisance, meaning they were released after meeting the conditions without being required to provide cash bail.
According to the particulars of the new charge, the accused allegedly acted jointly between March 10 and March 23, 2026, in Mufulira, where they are accused of taking, concealing and disposing of 34,844.96 kilogrammes of copper cathodes valued at US$448,596.
The copper is alleged to have belonged to Zero Degrees Investment (PTY) Limited, with the prosecution alleging that the accused acted with intent to defraud the company.
Yuyi and his co-accused took plea in the new charge of fraudulently dealing in metals before Magistrate Samson Mumba.
Confirming the development, lawyer Siisii Mulele said all seven accused persons had since been released after satisfying the bail conditions.
“Mr Yuyi and others have been granted bail in the sum of K200,000.00 on their own recognizance. It’s a free bail,” Mulele said.
He said the matter had been adjourned to October 1, 2026, for mention and the setting of a trial date.
The latest charge represents a change from the earlier allegation of theft by public servant under which Yuyi had been arrested.
