BREAKING: Zambia has launched its first gold refinery, which can process gold to 99% purity.
The facility aims to bring more small-scale gold miners into the formal market and help generate more than US$1.8 billion in revenue from the sector.
Zambia produces around 3.5 tonnes of gold annually and is seeking to diversify its exports, as copper accounts for about 70% of total export earnings.
The refinery is expected to add value to gold locally before it is exported.
