ZAMBIA IN ACTION AS UNGA81 GETS UNDER WAY IN NEW YORK
The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly is under way in New York.
Honourable Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is already at work on the margins of the Assembly. He took part in the 74th Extraordinary Meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG74), where Zambia serves as deputy chair, accompanied by Her Excellency Macenje Mazoka, High Commissioner of Zambia to the United Kingdom.
At UN Headquarters, Hon. Haimbe and His Excellency Mario Lubetkin, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, signed a Joint Communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between Zambia and Uruguay.
Minister of Health Professor Roma Chilengi addressed a high-level roundtable on “Beyond the Next Pandemic and Towards Universal Health Coverage: Self-Care, Community Resilience, and the Future of Health Sustainability”. He stressed that health resilience begins in homes and communities, and that individuals, families and communities must be empowered to protect their own health. He also set out Zambia’s commitment to making self-care a core pillar of health security and Universal Health Coverage.
On 24 September, “The Zambia Room” side event will focus on climate, environment, education and economic development. The following day, Prof. Chilengi will deliver Zambia’s national statement at the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response.
Hon. Haimbe will deliver the National Statement on behalf of the President during the High-Level General Debate on 28 September. During the week, the delegation will also engage with the Group of 77 and China and build support for Zambia’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for 2027–2029.
