ZAMBIANS RAISE K18,000 FOR POLICE OFFICER AFTER K5,000 MOBILE MONEY INCIDENT
A female police officer, identified as Constable Namusokwe, has received an outpouring of public support following an incident involving a K5,000 mobile money transaction in Kitwe.
According to the Zambia Police Service, the incident happened on September 22, 2026, along Oxford Road in Kitwe Town Centre.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said preliminary investigations established that Constable Namusokwe had asked a mobile money agent to deposit K5,000 into the account of a money lender to whom she owed money. She expected the lender to send her another amount through mobile money so that she could settle the transaction with the agent.
However, the lender reportedly did not send the expected money immediately, resulting in the officer being unable to pay the mobile money agent at that moment. Police said the K5,000 was later repaid in full.
A video of the confrontation subsequently circulated widely on social media, showing the officer being confronted and filmed by members of the public
Following the incident, Zambians have rallied behind Constable Namusokwe, with online personality George N. Mtonga announcing that K18,000 has so far been raised in support of the police officer.
Mtonga has appealed to well-wishers to help push the fundraising total to K25,000, while also announcing a surprise related to the officer expected on Monday
Meanwhile, the Zambia Police Service says investigations into the alleged conduct surrounding the incident are ongoing and that appropriate action will be taken if misconduct is established.
