ZCLU URGES MWALITETA TO WITHDRAW THREATS AGAINST CIVIL SERVANTS OVER ALLEGED OPPOSITION SUPPORT

The Zambian Civil Liberties Union -ZCLU has called on Kafue west member of Parliament Obvious Mwaliteta to withdraw his statement threatening civil servants who reportedly supported the opposition in the just ended General Elections.

ZCLU Acting Executive Director Derick Chekwe says the statement was not made in good faith and should be retracted immediately, saying it may encourage falsehoods and accusations within the civil service.

In a viral video, Mr Mwaliteta is heard saying that his team has already started compiling a list of names for civil servants who celebrated after opposition leader Brian Mundubile claimed early victory.

Mr Mwaliteta claims that civil servants who do not support the President Hakainde Hichilema should not remain in government.

He further said government will not allow public workers who are not in support of the UPND administration to frustrate its programs and operations.

And speaking in an interview, Mr Chekwe has also urged Civil Servants to remain politically neutral and avoid displaying publicly their political affiliation.

He states that civil servants serve the entire nation and should not show public support for any political party.

Mr Chekwe says civil servants who are finding it difficult to remain neutral should leave the civil service and join full time politics.
