ZELENSKYY HEADS TO NEW YORK WITH BATTLEFIELD MOMENTUM AND NEW SANCTIONS LEVERAGE
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian delegation are traveling to New York for the UN General Assembly, where he is expected to address world leaders, participate in a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine and meet President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy arrives with more than diplomatic appeals. Ukrainian forces have reported regaining approximately 125 square kilometres during Operation Vivaldi north of Lyman, including 50 square kilometres described as fully de-occupied. Shandryholove and Derylove were reportedly liberated, while Ukrainian forces established full control over Drobysheve. Independent mapping has also documented the gradual elimination of the Russian salient north of Lyman.
Ukraine has simultaneously demonstrated an expanding ability to strike Russian military, logistics and energy infrastructure far behind the front. These developments do not transform the entire war overnight, but they strengthen Kyiv’s argument that sustained military pressure can still produce tangible results.
That battlefield momentum now intersects with new economic leverage. Trump has signed the Lindsey O. Graham sanctions legislation, creating potentially powerful tools against Russia’s energy and defence sectors, its shadow fleet and countries that continue financing Moscow through major energy purchases. Its real impact, however, will depend on how forcefully the administration implements it.
Zelenskyy will likely argue that this is the moment to combine Ukraine’s growing battlefield initiative with stronger economic pressure and credible security guarantees—not allow Russia time to recover.
He therefore reaches New York not simply asking for assistance, but carrying evidence that coordinated battlefield pressure, long-range strikes and sanctions can impose genuine costs on Moscow. The central question is whether Ukraine’s partners will convert that momentum into sustained policy.
