ZIMBABWEAN ARRESTED FOR CHILD MOLESTATION BY UNITED STATES’S ICE
How a successful migrant journey crumbled

Working at Walmart and settling into life in Texas, US – Tanaka Chikerema once looked like the classic migrant success story.
He walked onto the stage at Bud Walton Arena in 2018 while CEO Greg Foran promoted him in front of thousands of associates to store manager, and newspapers ran his story about how he and his mother, Dorcus, had emigrated from Harare to Plano to escape poverty . Tanaka’s mum was a geography teacher in Zimbabwe.
Dorcus had worked three jobs in the US while earning her nursing degree, and Tanaka started at Walmart as a part-time truck unloader before rising to supervisor and then store support manager.
Walmart is a massive American multi national retail corporation that operates a chain of large discount department stores, grocery stores and hypermarkets. It was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton.
Tanaka journey melted the hearts of readers who saw it as proof that hard work could pay off. Tanaka and his brother joined his mother, when he was just about to start high school. His mother moved to the US when he was seven years old. He was a success story.
But that narrative began to crack years later. His first run-in with law enforcement came when he was arrested for driving without a license, a minor offense that hinted at trouble beneath the surface. What started there escalated.
On May 1, 2026, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced his arrest as part of a nationwide operation targeting non-citizens convicted of serious crimes. According to ICE, Chikerema of Zimbabwe was taken into custody for enticing a child for indecent purposes and child molestation in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He had committed the crime in 2020 and was on the run for close for close to six years until the ICE pounced.
From a Walmart stage celebrating the American dream to an ICE statement listing him among murderers and sex offenders, Chikerema’s arc ended far from the future his mother had hoped for when she told him to stay focused and keep his goals in sight. He is currently in ICE custody.
