ANDD CALLS FOR ISSUE-BASED CAMPAIGNS IN THE KAWAMBWA PARLIAMENTARY BY-ELECTION

As it advises the Electoral Commission of Zambia to uphold democratic principles and avoid any actions that would prevent qualified candidates from participating in the election.

Kawambwa ,22nd November 2024

We are pleased to note that several political party candidates successfully filed their nominations yesterday to participate in the Kawambwa Parliamentary By-election, scheduled for 20th December 2024.

As a constitutional democracy, it is essential that all political parties, whether in government or opposition, actively engage in the democratic and governance processes at every level. As such, the Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD), an organization committed to defending democracy, preserving national sovereignty, and promoting human rights and socio-economic development, is encouraged to observe the participation of candidates from the ruling UPND, as well as opposition parties including the New Congress Party, the Socialist Party, and the Citizens Party.

This marks a significant step forward in the advancement of our democracy.

ANDD believes that democracy should be seen as a platform for advancing development that improves the lives of the citizens who elect their leaders. Political candidates who are elected to Parliament must deliver on the promises made during their campaigns, ensuring that development is prioritized for the benefit of the people.

Therefore, we urge all political parties involved in the Kawambwa Parliamentary By-election to conduct peaceful, issue based campaigns that focus on presenting their manifestos and explaining how they plan to deliver meaningful development to the constituency. It is vital that they respect differing political views and engage in constructive dialogue.

In line with the Electoral Commission of Zambia Act No. 25 of 2016, ANDD strongly advises the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to fulfill its mandate in overseeing the Kawambwa By-election with fairness and impartiality. We expect the ECZ to ensure a democratic electoral process and avoid hindering any candidate’s participation.

Additionally, we are concerned by a statement from Tonse Alliance spokesperson, Mr. Sean Tembo, which suggests that the ECZ may nullify the nomination of New Congress Party candidate, Mr. Danstan Mwansa. If this allegation is accurate, it is deeply troubling, especially given Zambia’s democratic framework. We call on the ECZ to uphold democratic principles and avoid any actions that would prevent qualified candidates from participating in the election.
