The Attorney General of the Republic of Zambia has made an urgent application to Mashele Attorneys, lawyers for the Edgar Lungu family, to be granted permission for the representative of the State to see and inspect the body of the late President.
In a letter dated 29th July 2025 VFV ATTORNEYS, lawyers stated that for this purpose, a representative had traveled to Pretoria for this purpose and was available beginning 29th July 2025 onwards to inspect the body of the late President.
The lawyers threatened that if permission was not granted they will beseech the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria Division to compel the family to give them permission.
The lawyers stated that they were seeking consent to attend at the funeral parlour where the body of the late President Lungu is currently being kept, “for the purpose of
identifying and authenticating the identity of the body!”.
In its order of 25th June 2025, the High Court stated that; “Only the First to Seventh (Widow, Family and Spokesperson) Respondent’s are permitted to visit and to inspect and/or allow further individuals to visit and to inspect the body of the late President”.
Below is the Letter from VFV, lawyers for the Attorney General.

CASE NUMBER: 096565/2025
1. We refer to the court order issued by Deputy Judge President Ledwaba dated 25 June 2025, as amended on 26 June 2025.
2. In terms of the said order, we hereby formally request your consent to make the necessary arrangements for a representative of our client, to attend at the funeral parlour
where the body of the late President Lungu is currently being kept, for the purpose of
identifying and authenticating the identity of the body.
Our client’s representative is available to carry out this process on any day from today onwards to Friday, 1 August 2025, at a time convenient to all parties concerned.
Kindly indicate your availability and provide any specific requirements or conditions for access, if applicable.
We wish to make it clear that we will have no objection if a representative or representatives of your clients would be present at all times.
4. We submit that this process will not cause any harm or prejudice to the family. It is a necessary and respectful step to bring certainty to a matter of public and personal importance. In the circumstances, a refusal or failure to provide the necessary consent will regrettably compel our client to question the bona fides of the family’s position, and we will be left with no alternative but to approach the court for appropriate relief.
We trust, however, that this will not be necessary.
5.We look forward to your urgent response so that appropriate arrangements may be finalised without delay.

True. The identification and authentication of a dead person is always the preserve of the next-of-kin. What government is seeking to do is disrespectful of the dead and his family. Yet the characters in government want to lie to us that they want ECL buried in Zambia because they want to give him a dignified burial. What is dignified about seeking to control the body of dead person who is not your relative?

It’s very necessary to determine whether it’s lungu or someone else who has died therefore the state has every right to check if he is really dead as claimed or they just used a body double. In fact the state should even go further and do a DNA test to be 100% sure.

Who does the identification of the body of a deceased? Is it not the next of Kin?
The government inspecting, identifying and authenticating the identity of the remains of the late President? Which law is the government of the Republic of Zambia using ? Is this the Protocol, Tradition or custom for the government when a President dies?
And who is this representative of the government who wants to inspect and identify the body!
It’s becoming very difficult to understand Hakainde and his government. Something is definitely wrong with this group of people. Please not in my name. Am a Zambian Citizen, but am not part of this nonsense.
Given the level of criminality of Lungu who knows? From fake passports to reports, being admitted under a false name to travelling to and from Zimbabwe. Can we put it passed the former Head of State to fake his death?
The request is reasonable. How do you demand that the state pays for cancelled burial plans when the said dead person may not be dead but the Zimbabwean under who Lungu was admited. The family has brought this sorrid state of affairs on themselves.
Identification will put rest to all speculation

What are they hiding? If the man is dead. Why not prove that he is dead?
So, who did HH declare national mourning in honour of?
In whose name did he go and sign the book of condolences ?
Who did they dig the grave for?
Who do they want to bury in Zambia when they go to a South African court to demand for the remains from the family? Are you really normal humans to do these things above and now to begin doubting whether ECL died? Either ECL is haunting you or you are running mad and need to check in at Chainama.
Dr. Mulenga Kaoma, you are not worth your prefix, the questions above don’t deserve answers, reason being they are kindergarten questions. People of Zambia have the right to get to the bottom of issues considering the circus around the whole funeral. I would accompany the Attorney General for identification and authentication if need be.
Go get a job at the UTH mortuary of matching death certificates with dead bodies. For, you seem to have a morbid interest in identifying and authenticating dead people.

Some thinking here raises questions about the integrity and state of minds opposing verification of a scandalous individual who has furnished the good standing of the people of Zambia.
Rose to the helm of government through pandas, squeezed the treasury of it’s coffers to zero, built an empire he failed to enjoy, spilled innocent blood, earned the status of a run away PI even with the status he forced on himself into; that of leader of the once great nation Zambia, which turns out to be title of misleader,

To be sure his ghost will not come back to haunt Zambians, he must be positively identified and buried where he will await the coming of the Lord Jesus.

So in your mind what the Lungu family is doing is right? Are you aware of a Mr. Siwo who was made Board Chair Of Maamba had to be exhumed to prove he was dead. This was a criminal accomplice of the same Edgar Lungu. Ask yourself why the state had to go that far? This is because of the level of deceit the Lungu family and PF had gone to steal from Zambians?
