FIVE JUVENILES THAT ESCAPED FROM NDOLA REMAND CENTRE RECAPTURED
The Zambia Correctional Service wishes to inform the nation that the five juveniles who escaped from Ndola Remand Centre on 14th November, 2024 have all been recaptured by the Zambia Correctional Service Task Force On Escapes.
The juvenile offenders aged between 15 and 18 years escaped from Ndola Remand Centre also known as Peter Singongo Remand Centre in Ndola District of Copperbelt Province where they were held for different offences ranging from murder, defilement and house breaking.
The five Juveniles were recaptured from different places as follows: two (2) from Mpunde in Central Province, one (1) from Mbala in Northern Province and two (2) from Lufwanyama in Copperbelt Province.
Brief facts are that the juveniles escaped from the Remand Centre in the night through an opening they made with iron bars in the wall by removing some pan bricks leaving behind a note with a message “Please forgive us, we are tired of waiting for the court session”.
The report of the juveniles’ escape was reported at Ndola Central Police Station and a manhunt was immediately instituted which resulted in the recapture of all the five.
The five juveniles have since been taken back into safe custody and are currently held at Kansenji Correctional Centre awaiting further action.
The Service wishes to appreciate members of the community for their support in recapturing the five juveniles.
In line with the same, the Service would like to warn members of the public against harbouring any individual that escapes from lawful custody as doing so constitutes a serious criminal offence according to Section 60 of the Zambia Correctional Service Act no. 37 of 2021.
As such, the Service has formed a Special Unit; Task Force on Escapes with the Purpose of bringing back all those that have escaped from prison regardless of when they escaped.
The Service will also soon introduce bounty hunters among members of the public who will be paid for capturing any escapees.
The Service guarantees members of the public that it will do its best within its mandate to ensure that there is public safety by bringing to book all escapees to complete their reformation and rehabilitation programmes.
