Media Statement by Zambia Wake-Up Party (ZAWAPA) President Honourable Howard Kunda
Subject: OPPOSITION TO UPND GOVERNMENT’S ATTEMPT TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION
Fellow Zambians,
As Zawapa – Zambia wake-up Party , we feel compelled to address the growing concerns regarding the UPND government’s intentions to amend our Constitution. This issue is of national importance, and it requires careful consideration to protect the integrity of our democracy and safeguard the interests of the Zambian people.
The UPND government has demonstrated time and again that it is not a trustworthy custodian of national affairs. Their pattern of governance is characterized by deception, broken promises, and a blatant disregard for the will of the people. Allowing such a government to amend our Constitution would be akin to entrusting a fox with the keys to the henhouse.
Our Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It is not merely a tool for political convenience but a foundation that ensures the rights and freedoms of every citizen are protected. As ZAWAPA, we firmly believe that any attempt to amend this sacred document must be conducted transparently, inclusively, and with the sole aim of serving the interests of the people—not the political elite.
The deceitful nature of the UPND government is evident in their failure to deliver on key campaign promises, their lack of accountability, and their continuous manipulation of public trust. We cannot, in good conscience, allow them to tamper with the Constitution when their actions suggest ulterior motives that could undermine our democracy and centralize power further in the hands of a select few.
We urge all Zambians to remain vigilant and actively participate in discussions regarding constitutional amendments. It is our collective duty to hold this government accountable and ensure that any changes to our Constitution reflect the true aspirations of the people, not the narrow interests of those in power.
ZAWAPA stands resolute in defending the rights of Zambians and promoting a governance system built on trust, transparency, and accountability. We call upon other political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to join us in opposing any amendments initiated by this government without proper scrutiny and consultation.
Together, let us protect our Constitution and ensure it remains a beacon of hope and justice for all.
