*The Questions Edgar Lungu Must Answer Before He Can get a Second Chance*
By Magret Mwanza
Our political landscape is heating up with the buzz of former President Edgar Lungu wanting to reclaim power. However, before he finds himself anywhere near the ballot paper, there are critical questions that the Zambian people deserve answers to. Lungu must explain how, under his watch, Zambia’s economy sank while his family thrived beyond the wildest dreams of most ordinary citizens. The glaring disparities between his family’s sudden wealth and the destitution that gripped many Zambians raise serious questions that can not be ignored.
*Lungu’s Generous Gifting to His Family – A National Betrayal?*
It’s no secret that Edgar Lungu’s son, Dalitso, became a figure of immense privilege during his father’s presidency. With reports indicating that he was gifted almost 100 cars and filling stations worth millions of kwacha, one can’t help but wonder: Where did this wealth come from? At a time when Zambia’s economy was crumbling, how was it possible for a sitting president’s family to amass such immense riches?
Lungu must answer to the Zambian people. What did the public receive during his reign, other than skyrocketing poverty, unprecedented debt, and unemployment? While his family was riding high on a wave of luxury, millions of Zambians, especially on the Copperbelt, were trapped in economic despair. Over 700,000 pupils on the Copperbelt could not attend school. Contractors were left unpaid, suppliers bankrupted, and thousands of Zambians who had borrowed from banks to run their small businesses were crippled by debts, losing their homes and livelihoods.
*Where were you, Edgar Lungu, while the people who entrusted you with power were suffering?* While mines closed down and workers were thrown onto the streets, you were busy gifting your son cars and properties worth millions of kwacha.
*A Family of Privilege Amidst a Nation in Poverty*
What was equally troubling was the display of wealth by Lungu’s wife, Esther, who was reportedly building luxurious apartments while distributing $400,000 to cousins for safe keeping as if Zambia’s national treasury was her personal piggy bank. *How can Lungu justify these transactions when Zambians could barely afford to put food on the table?* If Lungu wants to present himself as a leader again, he must account for the millions stashed away by his family while the nation’s economy was on the brink of collapse.
These are not mere allegations; these are questions that resonate deeply with the Zambian people. Under his watch, the gap between the haves and the have-nots widened exponentially, and it seems that Lungu’s family was firmly positioned on the side of the wealthy elite.
*The Copperbelt Debacle: A Reflection of Lungu’s Economic Mismanagement*
The heart of Zambia’s economic engine, the Copperbelt, was brought to its knees under Lungu’s leadership. Hundreds of contractors and suppliers went unpaid, their businesses shuttered, and livelihoods destroyed. Mines closed down, casting thousands of workers into unemployment, while Lungu’s family amassed wealth. How is it possible that, in a failing economy, Lungu’s inner circle seemed to thrive?
How did Lungu manage to acquire vast properties, farms, and businesses, gifting his daughter an 8-million-kwacha farm, while ordinary citizens lost their homes and were forced to fend off creditors? *Lungu’s insatiable greed and family-first mentality is a slap in the face to every Zambian who struggled to survive during his presidency.* His family’s unprecedented access to wealth only highlights the entrenched corruption and cronyism that characterized his tenure.
Zambians need to know: *What kind of business empire did you run during your presidency, Mr. Lungu?* What sources of wealth allowed you to lavish your family with multi-million-kwacha gifts while Zambia’s economy was bleeding? *And if these riches were accumulated legitimately, why was the public left in the dark about the nature of these business dealings?*
*The People Deserve Accountability, Not Empty Promises*
Lungu, if you have any intentions of leading this country again, Zambians demand transparency. *The magnitude of your family’s wealth acquisition must be explained in full.* How did you, a leader responsible for the well-being of over 18 million citizens, allow such glaring inequality to flourish under your nose? Zambians do not want to hear the same excuses or half-baked explanations. The people you failed as president are still reeling from the impact of your corrupt leadership.
What the Zambian public demands is simple: accountability. *You can not seek to lead again without answering for the betrayal you INFLECTED upon the people of this great nation. It is time to face the truth: your legacy is one of wealth accumulation for a select few, while the majority of Zambians were left to bear the brunt of your reckless governance.
*What Did You Gift the Zambian People?*
You gifted your son 100 cars, your wife $400,000, and your daughter an 8-million-kwacha farm. But what did you gift the Zambian people? Was it not enough that the country’s resources were plundered, the economy ravaged, and public trust eroded? While your family sat on piles of money, Zambia was left with nothing but the ashes of a collapsing economy.
Lungu, it is not enough to think about reclaiming power; you need to face the Zambian people and provide the answers they deserve. Every car, every filling station, and every kwacha gifted to your family should be accounted for. Zambians want to know how their former leader, entrusted with national stewardship, could allow such blatant exploitation to occur.
In a country still struggling to recover from your disastrous leadership, the thought of your return to power is a chilling prospect. Before you even think about a political comeback, you must first answer
The Questions Edgar Lungu Must Answer Before He Can get a Second Chance*
Opposition leaders who resist to work with me are only punishing Zambians – HH
Opposition leaders who resist to work with me are only punishing Zambians – HH
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has called on the opposition serving in different roles to work with the ruling party through the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), if they are to deliver development to the people who voted for them.
Officiating at the launch of the PDU Forum yesterday, President Hichilema stated that opposition leaders such as MPs and councilors that resist to work with government are not punishing the President but the people who voted for them.
He noted that as the President of the nation, he was mandated to work with whoever the people in different constituencies and wards chose to serve them regardless of their political affiliation.
The Head of State said the opposition and the ruling party should operate as one assuring that government was open to work with whoever comes on board.
He mentioned that one of the reasons the PDU was formed was to encourage opposition leaders to partner with government and operate as one in order to deliver development to the country.
“The PDU was meant to be the positive fight. Opposition, ruling party we are one. Zambians went and voted for who they wanted, my job is to work with whoever the Zambians voted for in our constitutional democracy.”
“I’m aware that some of my colleagues in certain opposition constituencies are resisting to work with me. My message is that you are not punishing HH. You are punishing the voters that put you in office. If the kids in your constituency are sitting on the floor because you have refused to buy desks, are you a clever member of parliament? Maybe you think you are clever but not for long, time will catch up with you. Are you a clever councilor? No, in this PDU, we are one, our mission is one to deliver for the people,” noted President Hichilema.
The President further stated that he was available to listen to whoever wanted to offer solutions to the current problems facing the nation rather than negatively criticising without offering solutions.
“I have friends in the private sector who simply wrote off this tool. They said ah HH, wasting time, they write me nasty messages. I’m telling the truth, on my WhatsApp, I used to respond to some of them, but I stoped, I said responding to this guy, no he’s too negative, I said to him, say what your solutions are,” shared President Hichilema.
“I listen to a lot of opposition talk. Let us work together, let us not be negative. I read too much negativity but if we were doing things better, why didn’t this economy go down, why did we go into an energy crisis?”
President Hichilema noted that the PDU was formed to address the inadequacies that are inherent in government systems to deliver for the people.

COURT TO RULE ON SUSPENSION OF JUDGES ON OCTOBER 25
By Peter Sinkamba
The Constitutional Court has scheduled 25th October, 2024, to rule on whether to stop the suspension of three of its judges, who were suspended by President Hakainde Hichilema.
The three suspended judges had previously ruled in the 2016 presidential petition which ended Mr. Hichilema’s election challenge of former President Edgar Lungu.
The Green Party President, Peter Sinkamba, appeared before Judge Mulife, who was recently promoted to the Constitutional Court by President Hichilema, for the hearing of an application to stay the decision by the President to suspend the 3 judges on recommendation by the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC).
Mr. Sinkamba claims the JCC overstepped its authority by reopening a case that was already settled, which led to the current suspension of the judges.
In his written submissions filed Wednesday, Sinkamba argued that the Constitutional Court has exclusive authority to handle cases involving constitutional issues and violations.
He emphasized that the court has the power to issue temporary orders as a court of first instance in constitutional matters, such as staying the decision to suspend judges in order to maintain fairness until the case is fully resolved.
Sinkamba criticized the Commission’s legal argument, pointing out that the rule they cited from the White Book only applies to appeal cases, and not cases where the Constitutional Court is acting as the court of first instance.
He further argued that if the Court cannot issue temporary orders like a stay, it would undermine its role in protecting the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary.
He stressed that keeping the judges suspended could cause permanent damage to judicial independence and weaken the Constitution.
Sinkamba also pointed out that there is a strong case against the Commission, which went beyond its legal powers by trying to discipline judges it had already cleared. He submitted that the case is likely to succeed when heard by the full court.
Additionally, Sinkamba argued that the public has a greater interest in protecting judicial independence than in any temporary disruptions caused by halting the suspensions.
Even though the judges have already been suspended, Sinkamba insisted that that should be the driving reason for the court to issue an order to stay the suspension while the case is being heard.
“Before the decision is effected, there would be nothing to stay but once the decision is made that is when the stay order becomes more relevant,” he argued.
He also made it clear that the ongoing constitutional case is different from a separate judicial review that the suspended judges filed in the High Court.
Sinkamba emphasized that only the Constitutional Court has the power to deal with decisions made by the President under the Constitution.
During the hearing, the Attorney General relied on the written arguments it had earlier filed before court where it was claimed that the court has no authority to issue stay orders as they can only be issued from the High Court.
The ruling on whether to temporarily halt the suspensions is eagerly awaited, as it will have a significant impact on judicial independence in Zambia.
GBM IS A GREAT MAN AND HE WILL REMAIN SO- Prince Chanda
GBM IS A GREAT MAN AND HE WILL REMAIN SO!
…Prince Chanda.
….and the statement is true that says;
_”If you want to eat with the devil, you make sure you have a long spoon”_
I have known GBM since i was a little boy at about 11 yrs old. I grew up knowing him as a great businessman until I could work with him and understand his business. Genuine and traceable. He buys farm produce, keep them and sale them when the prices favours his set mark of profit. He owns a number of properties most of which he bought from government during privatisation as the highest bidder for anything he bought, while others were undervaluing state properties to convert to themselves through inside buying , he bought what he bought as highest bidder. He is among the top 20 richest men in Zambia, even if you bring it to top 10 he will be on the list.
GBM was a major funder of PF prior to 2011, he stood by sata under severe scrutiny of his business by RB’s MMD Governemt. He has been known for his courage and boastful nature , yet kind and forgiving, accormodating and open minded. GBM funded most PF MPs in 2011 general elections and elections before.
When sata had issues with the current Chitimukulu, cabinet made a collective decision not to install sosala as paramount Chief, against all odds , GBM chose his relative and resigned his position as defense minister, it devastated sata who went further to engage some of the defense ministers in the region to land in zambia to talk to GBM to rescind his decision, one of such defense minister is current Zim President. GBM stood the ground and remained outside government.
When UPND had issues penetrating northern PF strong holds in the northern blogs , when HH was stopped from entering copper belt for his lies when he went through the roof in Ndola , they got lucky GBM got frustrated leftbPF tonjoin them. GBM spent millions to feed upnd cadres and it’s leaders to traverse the country and establish presence in bembaland and copper belt including the east. I was with GBM when he was defecting to upnd as his right hand man and on that very day I told him I believe in PF ideologies, I can’t join UPND, go but when you return back to PF, you will find me.
When HH was arrested for treason, GBM and VJ Mwaanga left the country to fight for HH’s release, he went to south africa , chattered a plane for him to fly into regional leadership to seek support for Hichilema’s release. The letter to the commonwealth was written in GBM’s house in South Africa.
The 2016 legal fees after the failed Presidential petition, the bill was shared half half between GBM and HH. Here is something to note, GBM was spending his hard earned cash, Hichilema was spending money from the mines. The choppers GBM hired while in upnd, it was his cash. GBM spent in excess of 10 million while in UPND, all upnd leaders and cadres praised GBM for his generosity, UPND cadres are cowards it was GBM who gave them courage to stand out with those he defected with to UPND.
Here my words to GBM and all those who will soon find themselves in his predicament. Life upon man is battle , always remember that when declare war on am enemy, do not accept negotiation for peace, fight on and you will conquer.

The debasement and rot in Zambia’s criminal justice system (2011-2021): prelude to the present (August 2021-October 2024
By Prof Munyonzwe Hamalengwa
There are many points of departure if one wants to compare the fight against corruption under Zambia’s criminal justice system between the period ruled by the Patriotic Front (2011-2021) and that of the United Party for National Development, (August 2021-October 2024 meaning to date).
The following is the article I wrote in 2019 using the Ronald Chitotela acquittal case as representative of the lukewarm, if that at all, of the anemic struggle against corruption under the PF. If one pays close attention to the vigorous fight against corruption after August 2021 and various convictions and forfeiture of proceeds of crime after August 2021, one cannot help but conclude that there is a marked difference between the two regimes’ approach to fighting the named cancer. There is much to improve and go for under the current regime, the subject of future articles. Call the following write-up as Chapter 1, if you will, written in 2019:
The debasement and absolute rot in Zambia’s criminal and related justice systems is evidenced by the irrevocable words of honourable Ronald Chitotela after his acquittal from the charges of “proceeds of crime” or corruption by his worship magistrate Simusamba on July 11, 2019. Chitotela is reported to have thanked the President of Zambia for believing in him and presumably his innocence and inevitably for not being sucked or suspended during the tenure of the charge. President Lungu had stated that he would not do anything in terms of sucking or suspending Mr Chitotela because of the legal imperative of “innocent until proven guilty”, despite the fact that Chitotela was charged with the genre of crimes where pursuant to Section 47 of the current Anti-Corruption Act, the public officer charged must be suspended but receiving half the pay. This ensures amongst many other reasons that the investigation is conducted thoroughly and unobstructed by the presence of the target individual, whose very presence has the potential of derailing the investigation through intimidation and bribery.
The administration of justice retains its repute, whatever that is, when it is perceived that the investigation and the eventual trial are not charades and whose outcomes are not predetermined. The question of innocence until proven guilty is an important principle in criminal law but it is preserved when one is suspended at half pay. Suspension is to preserve the integrity of the investigation and the office from which the accused hails. The person is not summarily discharged with the immediate loss of means of livelihood. If the person is eventually acquitted, there is no reason why he or she cannot claim the retained portion of the income. The balancing of interests of the state with that of the individual is embedded in all areas of law including criminal law. In the process, of course, the scales between the public/state on the one hand and the individual on the other, cannot remain the same. It is in the nature of the beast.
The fact that Chitotela was vindicated does not and shouldn’t attract any accolades to the President’s allusion to the principle of innocence until proven guilty and his belief in Chitotela, for in reality the President’s statement concerning innocence until proven guilty and his belief in Chitotela could have affected the manner in which the prosecution and defence phases of the case proceeded, the testimony of the witnesses unfolded and the judicial outcome germinated. Of course, this is all informed speculation buttressed by Chitotela’s confession in which he thanked the President for believing in him by not acting precipitously.
Where on earth does the acquittal in a criminal case attract the sentiments of gratitude to the President of the country for his or her belief in the bona fides of the accused person? Political leaders should never be thanked in any way, shape or form when one gets acquitted. Chitotela’s sentiments speak volumes about the political colouration of Zambia’s criminal justice system. This evinces the debasement and rot in the criminal justice system when an accused person is acquitted and the acquitted person finds time to praise the behaviour of the political leaders in his or her saga! In a country where there is rule of law, the acquitted person must pay homage to it rather than to the President. Sycophantism aside, the President must never be treated as the giver of life and death in criminal matters, for this is tantamount to breeding demi-gods. Politics must never come near criminal law outside of parliament.
In Zambia we know the coupling of criminal law and politics. You just have to examine how the Public Order Act has been used in Zambia in the past several years. You just have to look at the political use of the police in the criminalisation of society particularly those in the opposition. You just have to examine the fake treason charges against an opposition politician and the attempted fake declaration of a state of emergency. But look at how there has never been a declared state of emergency against corruption which is daily threatening the economic survival of Zambia.
The Chitotela case raises a lot of questions: what is the law pertaining to corruption? What exactly are the elements of corruption and what is the matrix by which there would be sufficient evidence for conviction? What kind of investigations were carried out before the charges were laid against Chitotela? Should he have been charged? What kind of police investigators do we have for such politically-tilted corruption cases? Are police competent enough? Is the ACC competent enough to gather credible evidence? Is DEC competent enough to gather credible evidence? What kind of prosecutors do we have for such politically sensitive cases?
If Chitotela went down, a lot of corrupt politicians would go down. What precedent does this acquittal set? Already Zambia has a dismal conviction rate in top-heavy political corruption cases and one of the problems emanates from the investigative steps where gapping loopholes in the evidence unfold immediately the very initial grenades are lobbed into the courtroom case through cross-examination. The fruits of investigation enable or dis-enable the hand of the prosecution, an institution which is itself intimately bound to the umbilical cord of the presidency.
The President should have suspended Chitotela pursuant to Section 47 of the ACC as already intimated above. Not suspending him is a breach of the law. But the President himself had already set precedents in the breach of the law, so how could he require someone to temporarily step down at half pay when the President himself did not step down to hand over power to the Speaker of the National Assembly when the presidential election petition was filed pursuant to a constitutional provision, the supreme law of the land? If you can break the Constitution with impunity, surely you can breach the provisions of a mere statute, again with impunity! The debasement and rot in the criminal justice system and now we have seen that even the Constitution is debased and is decaying from the top by the President of the country down to the cop on the beat who fails to do a proper investigation or continuation of the investigation because the minister in question remains in office, contrary to the enabling legislation.
It is downhill from there. It doesn’t matter how you dress up the criminal justice system. It is debased and rotting. The same process is going on respecting the Constitution of Zambia. The outcomes of the National Dialogue Forum are meant to butcher, cannibalise and maintain in power in perpetuity those who have debased and killed our criminal justice system.
Back to the Chitotela case, it was painful to read the articles in the government owned newspapers about the kind of evidence the prosecution was deploying in this case. It was cavalier. It reminded one of the kind of post-Apartheid era prosecutions for Apartheid era crimes against humanity before Apartheid era judges who still owed allegiance to the Apartheid era judicial dispensation. Acquittals were the order of the day even when the evidence properly deployed could have resulted in convictions.
Convicting someone for corruption is already hard enough, just like convicting someone for crimes against humanity: you don’t bring anemic evidence when the job at hand is already hard enough. You already know the environment is a cesspool of corruption, and corruption is tolerated at the highest levels, then you commence your crusade by deploying the weakest evidence against one of the ministers whose ministry oozes with corruption! Why do you think the evidence of corruption unearthed by independent government institutions like the Auditor General and the Financial Intelligence Centre is not used while there are attempts to use the evidence of executive controlled agencies like the ACC, the DPP etc? It is to ensure that there is no potent fight against corruption. It is meant to preserve corruption in Zambia. That is my informed and considered opinion. There is nothing wrong in expressing one’s opinion. You should express your opinion too under our democracy.
The Chitotela case outcome continues the tradition of the lack of seriousness in the fight against corruption. Now all the big corrupt politicians are breathing easy knowing that the system is on their side and the President believes in them as articulated by Chitotela. Meanwhile, the President continues to demand: bring us the evidence of corruption if you have it. The evidence is in the mountains of reports of the Auditor General and the Financial Intelligence Centre and gathering dust in the right and or wrong offices known to the President, the DPP, DEC, the Inspector General of Police. Or a phone call away to the Auditor General’s office when one is ever appointed to that office or to the FIC. The evidence is there.
Something is gotta give. In the history of humanity, there is no system that has self-cleansed from inside out. So, it will go with the debasement and rot in Zambia’s criminal justice system. Any reforms and attempted constitutional amendments are not self-cleansing, they are meant to continue and entrench the debasement and rot to the deepest depths.
Future articles will deal with post-PF struggles against corruption.

UPND HAS NO PLANS FOR SOCIAL SECTORS – M’MEMBE
UPND HAS NO PLANS FOR SOCIAL SECTORS – M’MEMBE
…as he warns of potential seed crisis due to inadequate planning by the government
Lusaka, Zambia— Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe says UPND government’s 2025 budget, neglects the pressing needs of Zambians.
In his State of the Nation address, earlier today, he highlighted the budget’s shortcomings across several critical sectors, including energy, mining, agriculture, and health.
Dr. M’membe painted a grim picture of the energy sector, criticizing the shift to higher tariffs under the guise of “cost-reflective tariffs.”
He argued that this move would only benefit a few at the expense of the majority.
He also noted that despite the government’s push for solar alternatives, high demand and costs, coupled with high-interest rates, make these solutions inaccessible to ordinary Zambians.
“Every bank wants a payslip to get a loan. The majority of Zambians are in the informal sector. Where will they get these payslips?” he questioned.
The Socialist Party leader expressed skepticism about the UPND’s plans to revive and expand the mining sector, pointing out that mining taxes remain unchanged, and there is no credible plan for increasing copper production.
“Scaling up copper production is largely dependent on the availability of reliable and sufficient energy supply. Mining consumes a lot of power, so where will this power come from?” he asked, dismissing the government’s proclamations as empty rhetoric.
Dr. M’membe also criticized the government’s approach to agriculture, particularly the focus on efficiency in distributing the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) while neglecting the broader needs of small-scale farmers.
He warned of a potential seed crisis due to a poor farming season and inadequate planning by the government.
“The UPND government has been clueless on agriculture from inception. Poverty alleviation will not be dealt with under the UPND government,” he stated.
Regarding the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), Dr. M’membe argued that increasing CDF allocations will not solve the country’s pressing problems due to corruption and inefficiency.
He also lamented the inadequate budget allocation to the health sector, which he linked to poor health outcomes exacerbated by energy and drought crises.
“Our people are dying every day, and the political leaders we have today don’t seem to care,” he said, emphasizing the need for a substantial increase in health funding.
DPP GRANTED LEAVE TO APPEAL TO THE SUPREME COURT IN ASSET FORFEITURE CASE – THE PATH TO CLARIFYING ASSET RECOVERY LAWS
DPP GRANTED LEAVE TO APPEAL TO THE SUPREME COURT IN ASSET FORFEITURE CASE – THE PATH TO CLARIFYING ASSET RECOVERY LAWS.
The Supreme Court of Zambia is set to hear a critical appeal that could significantly impact the country’s asset recovery framework. This follows a rare decision by the Court of Appeal to grant the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) leave to challenge its earlier ruling. The case involves the forfeiture of funds tied to unlicensed foreign exchange trading and raises complex legal questions surrounding Non-Conviction Based (NCB) asset forfeiture.
At the heart of the case is the issue of how NCB forfeiture should be applied in financial crime cases, particularly those involving offences like money laundering and illegal foreign exchange trading. While such forfeiture is a powerful tool for recovering assets connected to criminal activities, it also raises concerns about ensuring the protection of fundamental rights.
The Court of Appeal emphasised the importance of the case, noting that it involves points of law with considerable public interest. These issues go beyond the specific facts of the case, touching on constitutional and procedural questions that warrant clarification from the Supreme Court.
The Court of Appeal’s decision highlights the broader public interest at stake, recognising that the legal questions raised are relatively untested in Zambian law. This case offers the Supreme Court a chance to clarify important aspects of asset recovery law, particularly in cases where forfeiture is pursued without a criminal conviction.
In its ruling, the Court of Appeal observed that NCB forfeiture, though a valuable tool, remains a complex and evolving area of law that requires careful judicial oversight.
Notably, being granted leave to appeal by the Court of Appeal is an exceptionally rare occurrence, highlighting the importance of the legal issues involved in this case. The Court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the constitutional and procedural matters at play, as well as the potential implications for future asset recovery efforts in Zambia.
The Supreme Court’s eventual ruling is expected to set a key legal precedent, not only clarifying the role of NCB forfeiture in financial crime cases but also providing guidance on how Zambia’s asset recovery laws should be applied in practice. The DPP’s contention that the funds in question were tied to illegal activities has broader implications for enforcing financial regulations and recovering tainted assets in the country.
This appeal represents an important moment in the development of asset recovery law in Zambia. As the Supreme Court prepares to deliberate on these crucial legal questions, its ruling is likely to shape the future of how the country addresses financial crime, ensuring that asset forfeiture is used effectively. Legal experts and the public alike will be watching closely as this case unfolds, recognising its potential to influence the administration of justice in Zambia for years to come.

Minister Musokotwane, how shall I as UNZA unionist explain K36 million partly unused CDF but no gratuities?- Austin Mbozi
Minister Musokotwane, how shall I as UNZA unionist explain K36 million partly unused CDF but no gratuities?
By Austin Mbozi
Dear finance minister ‘bo’ Situmbeko Musokokwane,
I am failing to defend my own UPND’s non-payment of UNZA workers’ retirement/gratuities packages. After coming second in the last University of Zambia Lecturers and Researcher’s Union (UNZARALU) vice presidency (VP) election, I this year re-contest, aspiring to create a friendly, mutually beneficial relationship between UNZA workers and government, like South Africa’s COSATU and the ruling ANC.
Yet, I cannot explain why UNZA pension/gratuity packages claimants are still owed some K746 million, worse than the K500 million where PF-thief thugs left the debt (there is also a K654 million superannuation owed). Even if UPND government paid some K300 million, the debt keeps increasing because more UNZA employees are retiring. Worse, UNZA package-claimants have been waiting since 2016, losing their money’s value in eight years! For example, a UNZA package-claimant would have bought 25,000 blocks at K4 each to build her house from a K100,000 package if she got her money during PF in 2016, but now she can only buy 16,000 blocks at an increased price of K6. Furthermore, if she had built her house in 2016 and charged K3,000 rent, she would have earned K288,000 by now. But she earned zero.
PF thief-thugs failed to pay UNZA because they stole. But UPND, to its credit, has saved/created huge money. The problem is their not prioritising UNZA packages. Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusa revealed that constituencies failed to utilise up to K14 billion in 2023 (Zambian Observer 10th May 2024). So, the banks keeping CDF lent the used CDF to your government in treasury bills and government bonds. We praised CDF increases, but not where you deny money to those you owe, increase it on those you do not owe, then borrow it back from those you allocated it to. If this repeats itself, it will seem like funding ‘mingalato’ (deception).
Analogy: Husband Musokotwane labour-grew maize with his first wife called Maiguru (UNZA workers). When meal is ready, he marries a second wife called Mainini who did not labour (CDF beneficiary youths). Of the three food-plates (CDF) which he fills on first day (2023), he eats one and gives two to Mainini, but tells Maiguru, ‘I have no food because PF thief-thugs stole it’. Mainini became full after eating one plate. Musokotwane borrows it (treasury bills), but he does not give it to Maiguru. Shockingly, on second day (2024), Musokotwane increases allocations food (CDF) to four plates, but increases Mainini’s plates to three, gets one and again tells Maiguru (UNZA) to patiently wait!
Government does not owe constituents. It owes UNZA claimants who worked for their money. When you find some money, you cannot tell the ‘wa nkongole’ (creditor) to wait/starve his children while you prioritise feeding your children. Your creditors will feel insulted like Maiguru and UNZA package-claimants.
The UNZA packages problem is not caused by UNZA administration, education minister Douglas Syakalima, government technocrats, or President HH as some UNZA union officials and members think. In fact, I suspect that President HH is being blocked from knowing the full UNZA situation. He met union officials immediately after being sworn in, increased education funding, resumed student’s meal allowances and recently got an honorably UNZA PhD, recommended by UNZA staff. I don’t see how he can want to punish any UNZA package-claimant.
The CDF-buying-treasury-bills story, and the fact that you increased funding in nearly all sectors, makes us deduce that the problem lies in your finance ministry. UNZA management cannot afford to finish paying all these packages from government allocations, and UNZA is not a private university to be told to raise its own funds. Union officials are complaining that technocrats at ministries, guided by some presidential-appointee permanent secretaries (PSs) are simply pushing them around saying, ‘come-tomorrow-come-tomorrow’. When they go, they say ‘go and see ‘‘chite and chite’’’ or ‘‘follow-procedure-follow procedure’’. The fact is, some of these PSs are just inflaming their egos by claiming powers that they don’t have over the UNZA packages issue.
Let me warn you in advance, you ministry technocrats, before I join UNZARALU. I am not like those ‘ba’ ‘Some-Of-Us’ type who cover their cowardice in suits and perfume which produces a ‘ka smell’(kununkila not kununka) which follows them like a shadow as far as a radius of four meters around them. You cannot scare me. I am a village man trained to fight-survive while herding cattle. One day we lost our father’s cattle. Fearing our father, Andrew Mbozi, we wandered at night in the bushes around our home watching him seated by the fire-side, eating. When he retired to sleep, we sneaked into our huts. But he banged our door around 03 hours, standing on the doorway with sjambok in hand. Being the bigger boy, I explained on behalf of my younger brother Habulongo and half-brothers Hampoto and Hanzunga how we lost the cattle, while they nodded in agreement. I explained how a bully called Myboy Mainza who was also herding his father’s cattle grabbed our cattle-herding whips (mikwilo), ordered us to sit down and then he tied our hands against our legs, which we folded such that our knees touched our chins in the ‘kaddina-matako’ way.
Our father, like Okonkwo of Chinua Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart’, toughened us. We nicknamed him ‘para para’ (para military). He whipped us shouting, ‘don’t you have ‘‘balls’’ to beat up Myboy yourselves?’. His wives, ‘biina’ Modern my mother and ‘biina’ Hanzunga, feared to dare rescue us, their arms folded across their breasts and shaking. So, we shall pursue without baby-crying for sympathy for UNZA packages as we trained during cattle-herding.

How friends became foes in Africa’s diamond state
Ian Khama’s well-mannered voice barely disguises the anger that he feels.
In several interviews that Botswana’s former president has given since 2019, when he began to express dissatisfaction with his hand-picked successor, Mokgweetsi Masisi, he has talked about him in damning terms.
Masisi was “drunk on power”, Khama told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme five years ago.
Since then the 71-year-old has gone into exile, spoken about a plot to poison him and been charged in Botswana with several crimes including money laundering and owning illegal firearms.
Having previously dismissed the charges as being “fabricated”, last month he returned home and appeared in court for an initial hearing.
The tension between Khama and Masisi is likely to colour the diamond-rich country’s imminent general election – just three weeks away – as the former president is actively campaigning for an opposition party.
At a further, brief, court appearance on Tuesday, Khama was all smiles.
The authorities are now believed to be considering if the case should proceed.
There is a strong possibility that things will come to a halt as Khama’s co-accused are no longer facing the charges. But the court will not reconvene until a month after the election.
To the outsider, who might have the general feeling that Botswana is one of the continent’s most stable democracies with strong institutions, this dispute between the current and former presidents may seem surprising.
The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has governed since independence from the UK in 1966.
In a constituency-based system, it has dominated parliament for the last five decades though its share of the vote in recent elections has hovered around 50%.
The country’s first president, and Khama’s father, Sir Seretse Khama, was descended from royalty and helped cement Botswana’s reputation for orderly government in the 14 years he was in power up to his death in 1980.
His 1948 marriage to a white British woman, Ruth Williams, was controversial and led to his exile in the UK.
Ian Khama, the couple’s second child, likened his own recent time in South Africa to that of his father’s period away from Botswana.
After having been in the military, he went on to become president in 2008, serving for 10 years.
Despite the dynastic appeal, the shine came off Khama’s government and in the 2014 election the BDP won less than 50% of the vote for the first time.
Concerns about corruption, human rights and the state of the economy – with high levels of unemployment – all dented Khama’s popularity.
In the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, funded by Sudanese telecoms mogul Mo Ibrahim, Botswana’s score dropped during his period in power.
The country’s huge diamond reserves have proved lucrative and seen the economy grow, but not enough jobs were being created for the young population and the wealth was not being spread around.
In 2018, Khama handed over the reins of power to his loyal vice-president, Masisi, perhaps hoping that he could still have some influence, but things soon went awry.
One theory is that there was a gentleman’s agreement that Masisi would appoint Khama’s brother, Tshekedi, as vice-president, which he refused to do.
Khama began complaining that his security detail was being cut and that democracy within the BDP was being undermined.
Masisi also reversed some key policies such as a ban on trophy hunting and ended the scepticism towards having closer relations with China.
A year after stepping down as president, Khama then joined the newly formed opposition Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) telling the BBC at the time that the “democracy that we’ve been proud of in this country is now in decline”.
He then went into self-imposed exile in late 2021 alleging that there were threats to his life.
Masisi has batted away the criticism and earlier this year described the poisoning allegation as “shocking”.
“If you look at the history of either killings or murders in Botswana and the methods used, poisoning is not one of the ones we know best, but of late he [Khama] seems to be an expert,” Masisi told France 24, adding that the former president had nothing to fear.
Masisi also said that the arguments Khama has been using against the government and his leadership have been “a litany of inconsistencies”.
There is absolutely no chance of reconciliation between the former allies, and Khama is hoping to end the 58 years in power of the BDP – the party his father helped found.
There are opportunities to take votes from the government as the problems with the lack of jobs and the accusations of corruption have also dogged the current administration.
Furthermore, the former president still commands a lot of respect in the country, especially among the older voters and in his home area around Serowe, where he is paramount chief and where the BPF launched its manifesto at the weekend.
But Masisi and the BDP remain in a strong position, especially as the opposition is divided.
The 30 October poll offers an opportunity for the Khama dynasty to once again have an impact on the future of the country.
Cameroon insists president is well despite long absence
Cameroon’s president is in “excellent” health, senior officials have insisted after a long public absence stoked widespread speculation about the 91-year-old leader’s condition.
President Paul Biya has not been seen in public since 8 September, when he attended a China-Africa forum in Beijing.
He has since missed events he was scheduled to be at, such as the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
But in a statement, the head of Cameroon’s civil cabinet said Biya was well and condemned the “mischievous individuals” speculating about the president’s health and “eventual death”.
The statement came after days of opposition parties and civil society groups calling for information on Biya’s health and exact whereabouts.
*Paul Biya: Cameroon’s ‘absentee president’
*Biya’s daughter hopes coming out will change anti-gay laws
“The head of state continues to exercise his duties in Geneva and has never departed the [Swiss] city following his visit to Beijing,” Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, director of the civil cabinet said on Wednesday evening.
Biya has long been criticised for the amount of time he spends outside the country – and in Switzerland in particular.
In 2018, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) reported that since coming to power in 1982, Biya had spent the equivalent of four-and-a-half years on overseas trips.
The Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva is said to be his favourite destination.
In a separate statement, government spokesperson René Sadi said Biya would return to Cameroon “in the next few days”.
He dismissed reports of Biya’s ailing health as “pure fantasy”.
After 42 years in power, Biya is one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
Under his rule, Cameroon has moved from being a one-party state to multi-party politics, but it has also been marked by endemic corruption.
Democratic gains have also been reversed, leading to the abolition of presidential term limits in 2008.
Cameroon is also in the grips of a secessionist war that has killed more than 6,000 people in the west of the country.
Diddy doused victim in lubricant mixed with date r@pe drug before ass@ulting her with his bodyguard and friend
Embattled music executive and rapper, Sean “Diddy” Combs doused a woman with lubricant that was mixed with the date r@pe drug Rohypnol before he viciously assaulted her alongside his bodyguard and a third friend, the accuser’s attorney claims.
The unnamed victim was allegedly forced to remove her clothes when Combs threatened her with a knife, lawyer Ariel Mitchell-Kidd told NewsNation.
Diddy then supposedly squirted the woman “all over her body” with “some type of lubricant or oil,” after which she noticed herself becoming “more and more limp,” the lawyer said of her client’s alleged ordeal.
The victim did not recall being forced to consume any drugs, but oil can be a conduit for Rohypnol, or GHB – the so-called “date-rape drug,” Mitchell-Kidd claimed.
“So, in order to get that to topically take into somebody’s body, you need a conduit, which is typically oil,” the attorney noted.
“So, it seems to me that there were some types of drugs mixed into the oil, which is why he was dousing her in that oil prior, not only to make it easier to assault her, but that was what was lowering her defenses.”
After he doused her with the mysterious liquid, Combs allegedly raped Mitchell-Kidd’s client, as did his bodyguard and a third person.
Mitchell-Kidd (pictured below) said she plans to file a complaint on behalf of her client later this week.
Diddy doused victim in lubricant mixed with date r@pe drug before ass@ulting her with his bodyguard and friend – Lawyer alleges
“The details are graphic, and the complaint lays out all of the details. … She was finally able to get away after the gruesome attack,” she told NewsNation of the alleged assault.
It was not immediately clear if the client Mitchell-Kidd was discussing was the same client who previously said she was lured to Combs’ home and raped in 2018.
That unnamed victim filed a police report after the incident, Mitchell-Kidd said last week.
Combs, 54, has been behind bars since Sept. 16, when he was arrested in New York City for racketeering, sex trafficking by force, and transportation for purposes of prostitution.
He was accused of using drugs to keep victims “compliant” during violent, sometimes days-long sex sessions, the federal complaint said.
Last week, more than 120 victims announced plans to file lawsuits against the Bad Boy Records founder for alleged sexual abuse and exploitation.
The wave of allegations were split evenly by gender, spanned over 30 years and included 25 minors – including one 9-year-old, attorney Tony Buzbee said of the horrifying allegations.
The children Combs allegedly abused were “seeking TV or music careers with promises [from Combs] of ‘I’ll make you a star,” Buzbee claimed.
Kamala Harris accuses Trump of putting politics over people with his hurricane response
U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris on Tuesday, October 8 said she thinks former US President Donald Trump has no empathy for others after he criticized the federal response to Hurricane Helene.
Following Hurricane Helene, and with Hurricane Milton barreling toward Florida, Trump has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that the White House is diverting disaster relief aid to unrelated migrant programs. While FEMA does manage grants for housing and helping migrants, that is a separate account and unrelated to the disaster relief funds.
Trump has also repeatedly criticized the Biden administration’s response to Helene, stating that there is an anti-Republican bias in how President Joe Biden and Harris are responding to the crisis.
Harris described travelling to both Georgia and North Carolina to survey the impact of the hurricane, emphasizing the “pain” and “shock” people are still in. At least 235 people have died due to Helene, and Milton is expected to pound Florida in the coming days after quickly intensifying into a major hurricane, at one point reaching Category 5. It’s expected to remain a powerful Category 4 storm before it hits landfall on Wednesday night.
“It’s profound, and it is the height of irresponsibility and frankly callousness. … Lives are literally at stake right now,” Harris said during an interview on ABC’s “The View.” “I mean we’re talking about real human beings and their lives and they’re losing everything, everything.”
She added, “The idea that somebody would be playing political games for the sake of himself – but this is so consistent about Donald Trump.”
“He puts himself before the needs of others. I fear that he really lacks empathy on a very basic level to care about the suffering of other people and then understand the role of a leader is not to beat people down, it’s to lift people up, especially in a time of crisis,” she added.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has also lamented the state of disinformation around relief efforts to date.
“I’m going to divorce the disinformation that is being spread from any one individual and just say this: Disinformation harms survivors of a disaster because they lose trust in their government and they don’t seek the assistance that they need and to which they are entitled and that we can deliver,” Mayorkas said on CNN on Tuesday.
Kanye West and wife Bianca Censor reunite in Japan amid breakup rumors
Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori have shut down ongoing divorce rumours as they reunited for a shopping spree in Toyoko, Japan.
This comes after sources claimed that Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s marriage was “on the rocks” and that Bianca had already moved out as they had “split up” weeks ago.
However, the married couple shut down the rumours and proved they were still going strong as they stepped out in Japan’s capital on Tuesday, October 8,
In the new snaps, the duo looked all loved-up as they stepped out in matching all-white outfits and had their arms around one another at the Dover Street Market Ginza.
And as the two reunite once again, body language expert Judi James shared her professional analysis of their latest outing.
In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Judi said: “If the rumours of a split are true then Kanye and Bianca are living their marriage backwards as these photos show them looking more in love and more coupled-up than ever before in their entire relationship.”

For their fashion choices, Judi noted: “Dressed in complimentary A-list styling with Kanye in a chic white tracksuit and Bianca suddenly bossing it in a much more high fashion, demure and relatable white outfit that is headline-grabbing for its style more than its look of nudity,”

She went on to point out that Bianca opted for a more appropriate look wearing a long-sleeved white shirt and stylish feathered flare pants rather than her typical X-rated style.
Judi explained: “The couple look as they maybe always should have here if they wanted to gain fans by creating a complimentary, romantic and attractive fit rather than pushing all the cosplay shocks.”
Analyzing their body language, Judi said: “We can see Bianca taking Kanye’s arm in a relaxed, affectionate gesture and then taking his face tenderly in both her hands on the escalator to register caring and a rather non-submissive approach to her husband.”
Diddy files third bid to get out of jail and claims he’s ‘not a threat to community’
Music mogul, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has launched his third bid to get out of jail as his defence claims he is innocent and sexual encounters were ‘all consensual’.
His legal team have filed new documents, arguing the music mogul is ‘not a threat to the community’ as he sits behind bars on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
Combs has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the criminal allegations.
At a prior hearing, a NY federal judge denied his bail because Diddy allegedly tried to contact witnesses.
In the appeal filed today, Diddy’s attorneys said he reached out to a potential witness with the approval of that witness’s attorney.
Diddy’s attorneys also claimed several witnesses actually called Diddy, and not the other way around.
The appeal mentions an unnamed victim but based on the details, the victim mentioned is Cassie because it talks about the video that was leaked shortly after she settled the case.
Diddy’s legal team said in the bail application their client is not a flight risk, despite what prosecutors have said.
He also agreed not to contact any more witnesses and to submit weekly drug tests.
In the appeal, Diddy’s team argued the case had been ‘sensationalized’.
They also claimed that Diddy has proved he is keen to comply by surrendering his passport, selling his private jet and offering up his $48 million home to secure bail.
The USAO will have time to respond to Diddy’s appeal but will most likely not be heard in court this week.
The music mogul, 54, is currently behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York after he was indicted for sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution earlier last month.
An attorney says he is representing 120 accusers who have come forward with sexual misconduct allegations against the hip-hop mogul.
Houston attorney Tony Buzbee said he expects lawsuits to be filed within the next month, with most expected to be filed in New York and Los Angeles.
Snoop Dogg’s petition to seal 1993 mu&der charge is granted 28 years after acquittal in gang member’s sh00ting
American rapper, Snoop Dogg’s petition to seal his 1993 mu&der charge has been granted 28 years after he was acquitted of shooting a gang member.
The rapper, now 52, and his bodyguard, McKinley Lee, were accused of the shooting and murder of a gang member called Philip Woldemariam in 1993 at Palms’ Woodbine Park in Los Angeles in August 1993. They later went on trial facing first and second-degree murder charges in 1996.
The release of Snoop’s first album came shortly before his highly publicized trial and after he was cleared, the Drop It Like It’s Hot hitmaker has continued to enjoy enormous mainstream success.
Legal documents obtained by TMZ confirmed Snoop real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. asked a judge to seal the records in January 2024, with the court signing off the request in late February,
Sealing the charge means the record is hidden from the public and won’t appear on background checks for employment, housing, and education.
In 1993, he was charged with being an accessory in the fatal shooting of a member of a rival gang, who’d allegedly been killed by one of the star’s bodyguards.
Prosecutors said Snoop had been driving the car from which the gun was fired. Despite the charge, he was controversially allowed to tour Britain. A tabloid headline reacted by proclaiming: ‘Kick this evil b*d out’.
Snoop subsequently and extraordinarily claimed that the late Queen personally intervened over moves to keep him out of Britain.
Snoop then 24 – was seen looking shocked and clasping his hands in prayer when he and his bodyguard were acquitted.
Jurors also acquitted the pair on one charge each of conspiracy to commit assault in connection with Woldemariam’s death.
Snoop, who had remained free on $ 1 million bail alongside Lee, told the LA Times after the acquittal: They made the right decision, you know what I’m saying?
‘This has been an ordeal that has affected our lives for the past 2 1/2 years. I was just trying to figure out if I was going to be here to raise my son.’

Former Presidents also get bored when out of office (I saw with RB) and require constant assignments- Dickson Jere
By Dickson Jere
Zambia has had four former Presidents in her 60th year of existence as a country. All the four former Presidents have had similar problems post their presidency. And yet as a country, we have not learnt lessons and developed a comprehensive framework to look after our former Presidents apart from the outdated Benefits of Former President Act that gives them retirement house, security and office subject to them being out of active politics.
Let me look at briefly what transpired with the four former Presidents;
1. Dr Kenneth Kaunda (KK) – Upon leaving office, he was subjected to searches by the newly elected MMD government. He was accused of stealing books and all. Later in 1996, he was shot at while addressing a rally in Kabwe. His benefits were withheld on account of being active in politics as he remained UNIP leader after he returned to active politics. KK dignity was only restored by President Levy Mwanawasa who gave him some comfort and support after assuming office in 2001.
2. Dr. Frederick Chiluba (FTJ) – he was equally subjected to searches and arrest following the lifting of his immunity by parliament. His clothes and shoes were embarrassingly displayed to the public in an attempt to show that he was a “Lazo”. He endured a long corruption court case that eventually had a toll on him. Chiluba dignity as former President was only restored after 2008 when President Rupiah Banda became President.
3. Rupiah Banda (RB) – His immunity was lifted and subsequently arrested on corruption charges. His benefits were withheld and subjected to court proceedings in the subordinate courts. His attempt to seek medical treatment abroad was frequently denied even when court allowed him to travel. He was blocked at the airport before departure. He fumed! His dignity was only retorted when President Edgar Lungu took office.
4. Edgar Lungu (ECL) – he similarly, is going through the same troubles like his colleagues KK and RB. His benefits have been withdrawn on account of him being active in politics as it is proscribed by law. He has had encounters with the police and all. Even though he has not been arrested, he is going through tribulations.
Have we learnt any lessons as a country from the above cases?
I believe that former Presidents must be allowed to keep state their security – whether in politics or not – as they remain state property. US does the same and that is why Donald Trump move with state security. You do not want former President to be attacked or kidnapped by unknown persons. It will be embarrassing to the nation and its people.
Former Presidents office must be kept open at all times – to coordinate their activities. This must be manned by trained civil servants who should coordinate their movements and all. For instance, if former President wants to visit the police, his office should coordinate with the IG so that he is received by high ranking officers and taken to a comfortable office. He is former Commander In-Chief and therefore remains so! His office must always exist…to Plan and liaise with Cabinet Office. There must also be liaison between his office and the incumbent President and at all times – only Presidents know what that office is all about – rest of us can only speculate! They know a lot!
We need to relook at our Benefits of Former President Act – and provide a comprehensive structure for the retired leaders. These people also get bored when out of office (I saw with RB) and require constant assignments. We need to get them into envoy roles and peacemaking roles. Keep them busy!
Let us amend the law!
Concerned Clergymen Urge Former President Edgar Lungu to Retire from Politics
*Concerned Clergymen Urge Former President Edgar Lungu to Retire from Politics*
…As the former president tells the Oasis Forum he is ready to meet President Hichilema for Dialogue BUT..
By Martha Mpindu
Former president Edgar Lungu has told the Oasis Forum that he is ready to meet with President Hakainde Hichilema for dialogue.
And a group of concerned clergymen has joined the Oasis Forum to ask President Hichilema and his predecessor to dialogue.
The group of clergymen recently met with former President Edgar Lungu, advising him to step back from active politics and assume the role of a senior statesman. Their recommendation follows several public incidents, including Lungu’s confrontation with police officers and his call for PF members to engage in physical altercations with the ruling party.
In a letter seen by this author written by the former President to the Oasis forum dated 20th September, Mr. Lungu said he was ready to dialogue on condition that the government stops interfering in the issues of the Patriotic Front.
“I am willing to take part in the proposed dialogue between President Hakainde Hichilema and myself, subject to my successor meeting two conditions,” reads the letter in part.
Meanwhile a group of clergy are concerned with president Lungu’s return to active politics.
A video surfaced recently showing the former President using demeaning and disrespectful nicknames for his predecessor, further tarnishing his image.
The clergymen voiced concerns that Lungu’s actions are damaging his standing in society. As the only surviving former President, they urged him to avoid further public embarrassment. They believe a small group of advisors is misleading him for personal financial gain, noting similarities to the downfall of former President Frederick Chiluba, who suffered from similarly ill-advised counsel.
Former Vice President Nevers Mumba, who is also a Pastor, echoed these concerns, urging Lungu’s family to intervene, suggesting that he is being used by his advisors for selfish purposes. The clergymen called on Lungu to restore his dignity as a respected former President, cautioning that challenging the current administration could have negative consequences, as seen with other former leaders.
Lungu remains under scrutiny, with reports of police preventing him from leaving court premises and prohibiting him from running in public, acts that authorities describe as “political activism.” He also faces ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption and authoritarianism during his presidency. Additionally, his significant weight loss has sparked concerns about his physical and mental well-being.
It is yet to be seen how Lungu will respond to the clergymen’s advice. Other figures, such as Bishop Ellison Bwalya and a UNZA academic, have similarly advised him to retire from active politics.

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION SILENCE ON HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES AMOUNTS TO COMPLICIT
…Mwamba expresses concern about prolonged detention of PF Secretary General, Raphael Nakacinda…
Lusaka-9th October 2024
Patriotic Front Chairperson of Information and Publicity, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba has demanded that the Human Rights Commission (HRC) establishes an immediate inquiry in the suspension of civil and political rights of the Opposition in Zambia.
In his letter to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) dated 9th October 2024, Amb.Mwamba said the silence of the Commission on wide-spread abuses of human rights amounted to complicity with abusive authorities and law enforcement agencies.
He cited the case of Patriotic Front Secretary General, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda, who has been detained for over 8 days without being granted police bond or without being presented before the courts of law.
He stated that the statement from Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, that they have made Police Cells a second home for Mr. Nakacinda exemplified the wanton abuse and disregard of human rights by the Zambia Police.
He said during the course of his duties as Secretary General in the last 3 years, Nakacinda has been summoned 30 times, arrested 21 times and is appearing before 12 magistrates over cases related to offences of speech.
It is clear that the authorities have breached the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), a multilateral treaty that Zambia has signed and ratified.
He said the frequent arrests of Opposition figures, was a violation of human rights, freedom of expression and democratic tenets.
Below is the letter to the HRC

Dear Chairperson,
The Human Rights Commission (HRC) is a National Human Rights Institution established pursuant to Article 230 of the 1991 Constitution of Zambia as amended by Act No 18 of 1996 and Act No 2 of 2016.
The mandate of the Commission shall ensure that the Bill of Rights, as provided for in Part III of the Constitution, is upheld and protected.
The HRC is further mandated to ensure that the Bill of Rights of citizens and people are upheld, respected, and protected.
THE CASE OF HON. RAPHAEL NAKACINDA
Hon. Raphael Nakacinda serves as Secretary General of the Patriotic Front party and previously served as Chairperson of Information and Publicity.
His duties involves among other things, media engagements, issuing public statements, organising the Party and providing checks and balances, demanding transparency and exposing misgovernance of the ruling party.
It is these duties that the UPND Government has used to oppress him, use the law enforcement agencies to attempt to silence him and instil fear in him.
Over the past 3 years, Hon. Nakacinda has been summoned to the Police 31 times, and has been arrested 21 times and is appearing before 12 magistrates facing offences related to his speech.
In the last one month, Hon. Nakacinda has been arrested and detained on charges of seditious practices after he condemned the presence of poisonous and toxic substances (aflotoxins) in the national stable food, mealie-meal.
On Wednesday, 2nd October, 2024, Hon. Nakacinda was yet again arrested on charges of sedition.
Despite providing two impeccable working sureties, in form of Members of Parliament, the Zambia Police have refused to grant police bond.
Further the Police have refused to present him before the courts of law eight days after he was detained.
Members of the Opposition arrested have suffered long detentions before matters are presented before the courts of law.
The case of Hon. Nkacinda succinctly represents the similar cases of human rights other members of the Opposition have suffered.
Further, Zambia Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga was quoted in the media stating that Police Cells were Nalcinda’s second home.
It is a matter of worry, that a constitutional body such as the Human Rights Commission remains loudly silent on the cases of human rights of persons including leaders of the Opposition.
We have been elated by international reports from human rights bodies including the United Nations Human Rights Council that have expressed deep concerns about human rights abuses, shrinking democratic space and the restrictions and persecutions being suffered by the Opposition in Zambia.
However, your organisation has remained silent, which silence amounts to complicit to authorities perpetrating the prevalent abuses and human rights violations.
It is imperative that, in the execise of your duties, you must NOT abandon the core mandate of ensuring that rights and freedoms are protected, secured and respected.
We therefore urge you to immediately cause an inquiry into this matter and make public your findings.
Your s Faithfully,
Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

KELVIN SAMPA ARRESTED FOR ANOTHER CRIME
– He is already in custody for a different crime
Former PF Kasama Member of Parliament Kelvin Sampa has been arrested and charged for defrauding Nigerian businessmen over a mine concession.
Sampa was arrested yesterday while he is police custody for stealing USD80,000 dollars from Japanese investors.
Sampa has also been charged with another offense of being found in possession of counterfeit notes in his safe at home.
ARREST OF KELVIN MUTALE SAMPA
Lusaka, October 9, 2024 – The Zambia Police Service would like to inform the public of the formal arrest of Mr. Kelvin Mutale Sampa in connection with various offences, including obtaining money by false pretences, possession of counterfeit notes, and possession of paper or implements intended for forgery. These offences are contrary to Sections: 309, 370(c), and 351 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Count 1: Obtaining Money by False Pretences
It is alleged that Mr. Kelvin Mutale Sampa, jointly and whilst acting together with Mr. Mabo Martin and other individuals yet to be identified, unlawfully obtained a total of USD 80,000 from Mr. Satoshi Sakamoto, a Japanese national. The suspect falsely claimed that the money would be used to assist Mr. Sakamoto in purchasing refined gold within Zambia, when in fact, this was not the case.
Count 2: Possession of Counterfeit Currency
Mr. Sampa was further found in possession of 49 counterfeit USD 100 notes, amounting to USD 4,900. The counterfeit currency was being presented as genuine when it was not.
Count 3: Possession of Paper or Implements for Forgery
Additionally, Mr. Sampa was found with paper intended to resemble special paper used in the manufacturing of currency notes. This paper, along with other implements for forgery, was intended for illegal use to produce counterfeit currency.
The offences are alleged to have been committed between June and September 2024 within Lusaka District, Lusaka Province. Mr. Kelvin Mutale Sampa has since been formally arrested and charged for the aforementioned offences. He will appear in court soon.
The Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety of the public and the integrity of Zambia’s financial systems. Members of the public are urged to be cautious when engaging in financial transactions and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

FAMILY SHOULD RESCUE EDGAR LUNGU FROM PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT – WELL-WISHER
FAMILY SHOULD RESCUE LUNGU FROM PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT – WELL-WISHER
EDGAR Lungu’s family must step in and rescue the former president from political vultures who are subjecting him to public embarrassment and humiliation, a well wishers has advised.
Dillon Mayangwa, a Lusaka-based political and social observer feels the former president is being held hostage by people that believe they can benefit from his ‘kasaka ka ndalama’ and diminishing political influence.
Mayangwa’s comments come in the wake of a viral social media video clip showing Lungu locked outside Lusaka Central Police Station and calling a police officer in a fashion many feel is unbefitting of his status as a former Head of State.
In the video, Lungu is heard loudly telling off someone who tried to restrain him from exhibiting Intercity Bus Terminus conduct in public not to stop him.
Joining in the widespread shock and concern for the former president, Mayangwa says it is time Lungu’s wife and children stepped and saved him from embarrassment.
Mayangwa noted that desperate parastatical politicians who think they can benefit from Lungu were subjecting him to public embarrassment.
He feels the former president should concentrate on his health and cementing his role as a father of the nation.
Mayangwa said it was embarrassing to see the former head of State calling those that saluted with respect “ati boss, boss.”
He advised Lungu to rescind his political decision and get back to normalcy title of a father of the nation.
“Our former president is now embarrassing himself in public because he is being ill-advised. In a quest to protect what many believe to be illegally-acquired wealth, he is making more mistakes. Instead of making peace with his brother [Hakainde Hichilema], he is busy fighting with him left, right, centre. How can the former head of State start calling those who saluted him iwe boss,” Mayangwa observed.
“Everyone who means well for Lungu can advise him correctly. This is the right time for him to be with his family, his wife and children to reflect. He needs be sat down and being told that you had your time and that take up the role as a father of the nation, not a father of embarrassment,” said Mayangwa.
“In everything there is a retirement, there is no job without a retirement. His retirement is now but he still wants to work because some selfish individuals are advising him to do so. People around him that are pushing him to do politics are looking more healthy than him because they are enjoying his money.”

THE PF PURPORTED “LABEL” MPS- Chanoda Ngwira
THE PF PURPORTED “LABEL” MPS
By Chanoda Ngwira
Firstly, I must be honest from the onset that I do not agree with some of the steps that some of the MPs under the sponsorship of the Patriotic Front, have taken regards working with the UPND. Much as this is their democratic right and also a way to push DEVELOPMENT in their Constituencies, I feel maybe, just maybe, despite the many differences in the party, they could have not done so or even do it but in a better way.
However, let me be quick to also mention the fact that some of the methods used to get at these MPs is also not good and I am not in support of such. Especially the article circulating on social media alleging huge sums of money and some other promises as having been the payments for these MPs to work with the UPND. That’s not the way to handle internal wrangles if any.
My perturbation is where the party has taken no step to address these issues through dialogue, instead chosen to lament and issue different statements through the media before engaging these MPs to find out why the sudden behavior… What if some have grievances and all?
Trust me, some may have very veritable concerns or dissatisfaction that could have led them get pushed to do what they could have done. And ofcourse some are simply traitors, money mongers and basically ingrates to say the least and these have no reason other than being political hyenas hence joining hands with the UPND..
My appeal to the party leadership especially those who like rushing to the media to castigate some of these MPs, is that engage these colleagues on a very even-handed round table discourse. Let them speak for themselves before we could rush to doing something that may even make things worse.
We must understand that we are basically in opposition, and we need numbers to ourselves as well as support even from the least of an individual for us to have it easy to remove this Government. This means we need everyone consigned if we are to achieve this huge task ahead of us.
There are some of these MPs that just need a word or two with them, they are still very much PF and they love the party. Why have we failed to engage them? Where is the quandary? I am so hopeful that something can be done unlike the root that has been taken.

FREDSON YAMBA ACTED IN NATIONAL INTEREST – ARRESTING OFFICER
FREDSON YAMBA ACTED IN NATIONAL INTEREST – ARRESTING OFFICER
…says government wanted to buy properties in Turkey to ease the pressure on the Treasury
Lusaka… Wednesday, October 9, 2024
A Senior Assistant Commissioner and Director in charge of Anti-Money Laundering Unit at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Kwaleyela Mukelebai has disclosed that the former Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba acted in the national interest regarding the property in Turkey.
This is in a matter where former Foreign Affairs Minister Hon Joseph Malanji and former Mr Yamba are charged with wilful failure to comply with procedure relating to procurement, and being in possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Testifying before Magistrate Ireen Wishimanga, yesterday, Mr Mukelebai, the arresting officer in the matter said he was familiar with the functions of the secretary to the Treasury to manage public funds.
He added that funding government projects is also among the roles of the Secretary to the Treasury.
And in the middle of cross examination, the witness turned argumentative as he didn’t want to answer the questions the way defense lawyer Godfrey Mwamba wanted them to be answered.
When Mr Mwamba asked the witness to calm down, the witness said “we are not fighting, so relax yourself as well.”
The witness however disclosed that Article 203 of the Constitution of Zambia, which Mr Yamba is accused of having breached is not in the Charge Sheet.
This was after he argued that the Article in question was in the Charge Sheet, but admitted it wasn’t after the defense lawyer challenged him to show the court where on the Charge Sheet the Article was.
Mr Mukelebai also admitted that if the budget allocation has not been exceeded, there is no need for a supplementary budget.
Regarding the properties in Turkey, he said government wanted to buy properties to ease the pressure on the Treasury.
“So you and I would agree there was a need to buy the properties to ease the pressure,” asked Counsel Mwamba, to which the witness responded by saying “generally, there was a need everywhere to buy such properties.”
The witness also testified that former Permanent Secretary for Administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ronald Simwinga was told to get a loan for the purchase of the properties in question.
Amongst the documented “proof” he brought before court to that effect was an alleged letter from State House to Mr Yamba on the need to get a loan for the purchase of the said property.
Mr Mukelebai said after March 2020, Dr Simwinga wrote a letter, addressed to Mr Yamba regarding the terms of the loan the Turkish government offered Zambia regarding the purchase of the said property.
When asked if Dr Simwinga submitted the agreement to Mr Yamba, the witness said “according to the letter he submitted.”
He said the submission was meant to enable the Ministry of Finance review terms of the agreement.
Mr Mukelebai said Ministry of finance did not want to contract the loan because it would have affected the treasury’s ability to finance the budget.
He added that “Mr Yamba was acting in the best interest of government, according to the letter.”
Diddy alleged link to Tupac’s murd3r suspect Keefe D ‘exposed’
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ alleged links to the murder of late rapper Tupac have once again resurfaced following the music mogul’s arrest last month.
Combs is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. for sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
He has long denied having any involvement in Tupac’s death in 1996. Tupac passed away six days after a gunman shot him four times in the chest at a stoplight in Las Vegas.
In a new podcast series, Greg Kading, one of the investigators assigned to Tupac’s murder, examines the renewed spotlight on Combs’ alleged connection to Tupac’s infamous murder. He begins by noting how a rivalry between Combs’ Bad Boy Records on the East Coast and Marion ‘Suge’ Knight’s Death Row Records West Coast dominated the 1990s Hip Hop world.
Combs was the manager and mentor of Tupac’s rap rival, the Notorious B. I.G., who was also tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997, at the age of 24 – less than one year on from Tupac’s murder in September 1996. The host of the podcast explains how Tupac once accused his former friends Biggie and Combs of shooting and robbing him in a 1994 attack.
“Many thought Diddy and Bad Boy were somehow involved with the attack. Shakur even openly accused Biggie and Puffy of having prior knowledge of the shooting, something they both denied,” Marjorie Hernandez states on the podcast.
“The Quad studios shooting sparked the infamous and deadly East Coast vs West Coast rivalry that would ultimately cost Tupac and Biggie their lives in drive-by shootings within months of each other in 1996.”
Retired LAPD homicide detective Greg Kading investigated both Tupac and Biggie’s murders in the 1990s.
Speaking on the podcast The Trial of Diddy, Kading alleged Combs hired members of the street gang Crips for protection during a stop of the Summer Jams tour in Anaheim, California in 1995. Prominent Crop members at the time included Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis and his nephew, Orlando ‘Baby Lane’ Anderson.
Kading claims: “Keefe D was dealing both PCP and cocaine from Los Angeles to another drug dealer, a figure out in New York, a guy named Eric Martin. They called him Zip. Zip was a very well-known drug dealer, hustler, shot caller out in New York who happened to be affiliated with Puffy Combs’ dad.
“And after Puffy’s dad died, Zip kind of took over as kind of like a play uncle figure for Puffy Combs. Also, he became very close with Christopher Wallace and Faith Evans and was even the godfather of Christopher Wallace’s son. So that was the connection. Keefe knew a drug dealer, that drug dealer was affiliated with Puffy and Biggie and that was how the introduction happened when Puffy said that he needed some security on the West Coast because of all the problems that he was having with Suge Knight and Death Row Records. His friend Zip, his play uncle said, hey, I’ve got just the perfect people for you. I know some gang members out there that can handle that kind of work. Let me introduce you to them. And that’s how the association began.”
Host Hernandez then tells listeners that following Tupac’s murder, ‘Keefe D – along with three others – were identified as the suspects in the escape vehicle.
‘Keefe D confessed to investigators that it was his nephew, Baby Lane, who fired the fatal shots at Tupac and Suge Knight.
Almost three decades post Tupac’s assassination, Keefe D was apprehended and is now facing murder charges in Nevada.
Prosecutors claim that Keefe D was the brains behind Shakur’s shooting, and he is the only surviving individual from the alleged suspect vehicle today.
Interviews of Keefe D were submitted by prosecutors, where he claimed that Combs offered him $1 million to kill Tupac.
According to the podcast, court documents reveal that when police asked if Combs “play[ed] a role in this thing?”, Keefe D replied: “Yeah, I think he did.”
Hernandez continues to claim: “Davis said Puffy contacted him about Pac’s death, and that Combs ‘reached out wondering if the South Side Crips were responsible for Shakur’s death by asking, ‘Is that us?’ [Keefe D], beaming with pride, answer[ed], ‘Yes.’” Kading adds how Combs would have “known that he was targeted when he came to the West Coast” so met up with Keefe D when “things got really bad”.
Kading claims: “Puffy called him aside and made it more pronounced, made it more emphatic. Hey, really need you to take care of this problem. Because, you know, I’m a dead man walking if you don’t. That was kind of the gist.’
According to Keefe D, and this is where I give this caveat. This is a conversation where I think emotions are going on desperation and fear. And Keefe D says that he offered him a million dollars. And of course, Keefe D is not going to turn that down. So that was the kind of number that was thrown out there.”
The Las Vegas Police Department made a significant move on July 18, 2023, by executing a search warrant at a residence in Henderson, Nevada, linking the premises to their longstanding probe into the murder of Tupac Shakur. Mystery unravelled as it turned out the property was owned by Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis’ wife.
This led to Keefe D’s arrest on September 29, 2023, with subsequent charges of murder placed against him; he professed his innocence when he pleaded not guilty on November 2, 2023. Fast forward to November 7, 2023, and Judge Carli Kierny of the Clark County District Court pencilled in June 3, 2024, for Keefe D’s trial commencement.
Combs has always denied having any involvement in the murders of both Tupac and Biggie. During a radio interview in 2023, Combs was questioned about Tupac’s death but quickly shut down his interviewers, saying: “We don’t talk about things that are nonsense, we don’t entertain nonsense, with all due respect, but I appreciate you as a journalist asking, thank you.”
The rapper was arrested on Monday, September 16, in New York City, and is facing serious allegations of sex trafficking and racketeering. Despite several attempts, bail has been denied, and Combs is now locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC) in Brooklyn.
LeBron James says being teammates with son in NBA ‘means everything’ as he didn’t have a father growing up
LeBron James has been very outspoken about playing a professional NBA game with his son Bronny before he retires. On Sunday, that dream became a reality as Bronny, 20, played alongside his father in the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Phoenix Suns at Arcisure Arena.
Bronny was brought into the game in the second quarter to join his superstar father on the court. And though the Lakers lost the game, the pair had a lot to celebrate as Sunday also marked Bronny’s 20th birthday. LeBron, 39, and Bronny also wrote their name in the history books as they became the first father and son to play an NBA game together, ESPN reported.
Following the game, LeBron touched on the historical moment and how he cherished it – particularly because he did not have a father while growing up. “For a father, it means everything,” the NBA champion and future Hall of Famer said.
“For someone who didn’t have that growing up, to be able to have that influence on your kids and have influence on your son. Be able to have moments with your son. And ultimately, to be able to work with your son. I think that’s one of the greatest things that a father can ever hope for or wish for.”
LeBron also said their coach JJ Redick informed him about playing alongside his son in their first professional NBA game before the commencement of the match. “Just wanted to get them a chance to play together in preseason … within the flow of the game,” Redick said.
“I’m thrilled that I get to be a part of this. I really am. It’s cool as a basketball fan. I think it speaks to LeBron’s longevity, but also his competitive stamina that he’s able to still be doing this in Year 22. It speaks to the work that Bronny has put in to get to this point and really just the fatherly care and love, and certainly the motherly care from Savannah as well. Bronny’s such a great kid and he’s a pleasure to be around.”
Bronny was drafted by the Lakers with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft. Prior to earning his first professional basketball contract, his father had repeatedly spoken about his desire to play alongside him.
“I’m prepping for the game like it’s regular game,” LeBron said. “But the moment when we came out of the timeout and he was picking up full court and I went up — because my guy was taking the ball out. We stood next to each other and I kind of looked at him, and it was just like, ‘Is this ‘The Matrix’ or something?’ It just didn’t feel real.”
Bronny also spoke about being teammates with his father and putting their personal relationship aside when they don the Lakers jersey. “I’m always thinking about ‘That’s my dad’ because that’s literally my dad,” the 20-year-old said.
“So I just go out there and, when I’m playing, he’s just my teammate. That’s all I’m thinking at that point.”
“It’s just taking everything that has happened to me during this year, getting up and continuing to work every day,” he also said when he was asked about how he managed to compose himself when he checked in. “Just finding fuel every day to get up and start working.
“JJ has really emphasized the defensive end and being a pest on defense. So that’s what I’ve been trying to focus on stepping on the floor.”
Diddy considered ‘so powerful’ even from behind bars
Music mogul, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is facing federal charges for sex trafficking and racketeering, remains influential even while imprisoned in Brooklyn.
The 54-year-old music mogul is currently in federal custody amid the serious charges and various civil lawsuits.
According to a source speaking to People, his reputation continues to evoke fear among many in the industry, reflecting the enduring reach of his influence.
‘He’s so powerful. Everyone was afraid to cross him,’ the insider claimed. ‘Even though he’s behind bars now, he’s still so powerful. We all knew it even back then.’
The source added: ‘He’s incredibly smart, he knows a lot of people, and he’s helped a lot of people — so a lot of people owe him. He knows that.’
The insider went on to say that Diddy’s obsession with control was often attributed to his creative genius.
The report comes after concerning footage of Diddy boasting of his plans to go ‘buck full crazy’ and ‘find girls’ with a teenage Justin Bieber has resurfaced online following the disgraced music mogul’s arrest.
The rap star’s formerly close bond with Bieber has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks – with troubling videos of a then-15 year-old Bieber spending ’48 hours with Diddy’ circulating amid the numerous allegations being made against the Bad Boy Records founder.
In the clip, Combs says: ‘He’s having 48 hours with Diddy, where we hanging out and what we’re doing we can’t really disclose. But it’s definitely a 15-year-old’s dream.
‘I have been given custody of him. He’s signed to Usher and I had legal guardianship of Usher when he did his first album.’
Diddy continued: ‘I don’t have legal guardianship of him [Bieber] but for the next 48 hours he’s with me and we’re gonna go buck full crazy.’
The Tell Me artist then asked Bieber what he wanted to do, to which the teen replied: ‘Let’s go get some girls’.
‘Man after my heart,’ Combs replied. ‘That’s what I’m talking about.’
The video was uploaded on Bieber’s official YouTube channel back in
November 2009.
The caption read: ‘I told you guys I produced a song for DIDDY and I wanted to show it to him and you got his attention. Best fans in the world.
‘Well this past weekend I spent 48 HRS with DIDDY and had some fun. Here is some of the action. Thanks for the car PUFF…haha’.
Kenya launches work permit to attract global digital nomads
Kenyan president William Ruto launched East Africa’s biggest travel expo, Magical Kenya, this past week, with the key highlight being the announcement of a Digital Nomad Work Permit and the Transit and Long Connection Travellers Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
Designed to allow global digital professionals to live and work in Kenya, the work permit and ETA are designed to allow, President Ruto said, global digital professionals and their families to live and work in Kenya, as well as experience the wonders of Magical Kenya every day, all while serving clients from anywhere in the world.”
The Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) attracted a number of players from Uganda’s hospitality sector, with many walking away with nuggets of information.
“When President Ruto came to the opening, he told us of their 2024 goal to have 2.5 million arrivals and double the number by 2027. I thought that’s ambitious but achievable if worked on. So setting ambitious targets and following up is one, and giving relative investment is another,” Emmanuel Njuki, the director of Sunset Adventures, told Sunday Monitor.
“I came to attend the Magical Kenya Tourism Expo to expose myself to a tourism market that’s bigger by value and players, and also create networks with tour and travel players, lodge owners and experienced suppliers from around the world. I am happy that this expo has given me all those,” he added.
There was unanimity among Ugandan tour operators that their native country should be more aggressive in undertaking marketing campaigns.
Sharon Ireeta Kasigwa, the founder of Nkwazi Travel, was shocked to discover tourists at the expo who had no idea about the beauty of Mountain Rwenzori or the fact that 50 percent of the world’s mountain gorillas and 10 percent of the world’s bird species are found in Uganda.
The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) this past week announced entering a long-term strategic partnership with CNN International. This as UTB looks to promote Uganda as a top tourist destination. Ireeta said transboundary undertakings would be just as impactful.
“We have shared values on customer experience, passion, empathy, integrity and creativity on the coast of Kenya, islands of Zanzibar and Tanzania, plains of northern Tanzania near Mountain Kilimanjaro and other countries. Together, we can share Africa with the world,” she said, adding: “Of course, each country has unique tourism offerings and in partnership, we can sell holistic packages.”
Martha Nansamba, the marketing manager of Ngamba Chimpanzee Trust, is a bit sceptical about whether President Ruto’s exciting Digital Nomad Work Permit will not come with a fee to it. Despite the scepticism, she agrees that there is a lot to learn when Uganda’s performance is benchmarked against Kenya’s.
Nansamba also attended this year’s Indaba Travel & Trade Expo in South Africa. She observed that tourists were quite decisive and intentional to travel and tour Ugandan tourism attractions like the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, situated on Lake Victoria, which is Africa’s biggest fresh water body.
UTB revealed this past week that the Uniquely Yours campaign that will set out to make the most of a multi-platform approach is also intended to “position Uganda as a sustainable tourism destination.”
Njuki told the Monitor that Uganda is easy to sell.
“I cannot count the number of times I was reminded by our previous guests that Uganda is a really beautiful country,” he said, adding: “That is where our competitiveness lies—in the beauty of nature and people. By marketing Uganda more and managing preventable negative drivers of news such as political violence, Uganda can give tourism a boost.”
The MKTE is an annual Pan African trade fair hosted by Kenya Tourism Board to facilitate structured business interactions between buyers, who go on familiarisation trips
ZiG’s false promise: Debunking the gold-backed myth
Some of us said it from day one, but we were accused of being ‘prophets of doom’.
When the Zimbabwe authorities declared war on illegal money changers, ostensibly, in order to ‘defend’ the stability of the newly-introduced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG or ZWG) currency, it was clear something was amiss.
If the ZiG was genuinely gold-backed, as the government of Zimbabwe alleged, then why fear the so-called ‘black market’?
Did the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) and the ruling establishment no boast that this time around the new currency was so powerful, as it was pegged to gold reserves, that it was nearly impossible for it to lose value?
In fact, did we not see music videos on the state-controlled broadcaster, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), touting these supposed superpowers the ZiG possessed?
I also distinctly recall a video that went viral on social media showing a ruling ZANU PF official at a gathering of the Apostolic sect (Mapositori), staging a little play (drama).
There were some ‘Mapositori’ dresses in their white religious garments being instructed on how to play their respective roles in a play meant to show what it meant that the ZiG was backed by gold.
To directly receive articles from Tendai Ruben Mbofana, please join his WhatsApp Channel on: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaqprWCIyPtRnKpkHe08
There was a character who portrayed ‘the ZiG’, and another representing ‘sanctions’.
When ‘ZiG’ was instructed by the ZANU PF official to approach ‘sanctions’, he was overpowered.
However, the official called upon three heavily-built men (‘monya’, as they are referred to in Zimbabwe) to come to the defense of ‘ZiG’.
These three ‘monya’ were supposed to be gold, other precious metals, and foreign currency reserves, all alleged to be backing the new Zimbabwe currency.
With the backing of these three ‘tough guys’, ‘ZiG’ was able to stand his ground against ‘sanctions’, and prevail.
This little drama perfectly summed up the narrative that had been peddled by Zimbabwe authorities since the introduction of the ZiG on 5th April 2024.
This new currency was said to be directly pegged to gold and backed by reserves of gold, other precious metals, and foreign currency stored at the RBZ.
The nation was even shown President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa inspecting these gold reserves at RBZ vaults in the capital Harare.
We were all assured that, this time around, nothing would stand in the way of the ZiG’s stability.
This move was packaged as a masterstroke of genius and a game changer.
Well, barely five months later, and the ‘gold-backed’ ZiG was screaming for help!
Not only had it fallen, in spectacular fashion, on the parallel market, from the initial ZWG13,56 to over ZWG50 to the greenback, but it has also lost significant value on the official market.
This was after the RBZ had devalued the currency by 43%, from 13.99 to 24.39 to the US dollar.
All this happened as the price of gold was actually increasing on the global market.
On 30th June 2024, the price of gold stood at US$2324.98 per ounce.
On 1st September 2024, it had risen to US$2,502.77 and then on 24th September gone up again to US$2,658.08 per ounce.
As a matter of fact, today, gold is trading at US$2,659.54 per ounce.
So, why is our own ZiG losing value whilst the price of gold is actually increasing if the local currency is backed by gold?
Firstly, it is essential that we all understand what this term truly means.
A gold-backed currency is a monetary system where a country’s currency value is directly linked to gold reserves.
This means that the currency’s value is pegged to the value of gold, and each unit can be exchanged for a corresponding amount of gold.
The gold standard, as it is often called, provides price stability, low inflation, and facilitates international trade.
A key characteristic of a gold-backed currency is that it has a fixed exchange rate whose value is fixed relative to gold.
A portion of the currency in circulation is backed by gold reserves, and the currency can be exchanged for gold at a fixed rate.
Unfortunately, the ZiG does not quite fit the bill, despite initial claims by Zimbabwe authorities.
That is why finance minister Mthuli Ncube had to make an embarrassing about-turn when questioned as to why the ZiG was actually losing value yet gold price going up.
In his laughable and pathetic attempt at saving face after the government had been caught in a boldfaced lie, he tried to twist the meaning of the term ‘gold-backed’.
His version of ‘gold-backed’ was, to quote him literally, “There was gold at the back of our currency!”
How ridiculous can one get, especially coming from a professor of finance!
He revealed that the ZiG’s value is not really pegged to gold, nor is it directly linked to gold reserves.
Instead, the gold and foreign currency reserves will be sold to increase the US dollar supply in the market.
This, as can clearly be seen, does not align with the principles of a gold-backed currency.
While the concept of gold-backed currencies offers stability and predictability, Zimbabwe’s ZiG falls short of meeting these standards.
In other words, the ZiG is not backed by gold.
No wonder its value is falling like a tonne of bricks!
The Zimbabwe government and RBZ were lying through the skin of their teeth.
Such unashamed lies are what worsen the economic situation in the country as this further erodes public trust in both the authorities and the local currency.
This is the main reason whatever currency is introduced by the government is rejected by the ordinary citizenry, leading to its loss of value.
This is also why the so-called ‘black market’ will always thrive in Zimbabwe, as Zimbabweans offload the undesired local currency for the more preferable and stable US dollar.
It has absolutely nothing to do with saboteurs, detractors, speculators, or even sanctions.
As a matter of fact, the greatest saboteur of the Zimbabwean economy and its currency is the Mnangagwa administration itself.
Stop lying to the people of Zimbabwe and address the real issues bedevilling our economy.
We need to see a genuine crackdown on corruption and the implementation of sound economic policies that actually stimulate the growth of our manufacturing and exporting sectors.
Everything else, as today’s youth day, ‘yatongove drama’!

Oprah, Jay-Z, and these Black American billionaires are still too poor to be on the Forbes 400 List
In recent years, there has been a surge in Black billionaires across the world. In America alone, the number of Black billionaires has increased from one to 10 in about 20 years. However, most of these billionaires are not rich enough to make Forbes’ 400 list of the richest Americans.
To make it on Forbes’ 400 list for 2024, the billionaire must be worth at least $3.3 billion, which is $400 million more than last year, as per Forbes. The high bar has literally made it impossible for many billionaires in the U.S. to be on the list.
“In fact, for the first time ever, there are more U.S. billionaires not on the list—415 and counting—than on it,” Forbes wrote.
Black billionaires Robert F. Smith, David Steward, and Michael Jordan made the list but the following were too poor to make the grade:
Magic Johnson
Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson recently joined an elite club of billionaire athletes. His new economic status followed a lucrative post-basketball career as an investor in professional sports teams, movie theaters, Starbucks cafes, and a health insurance provider, Forbes wrote. Forbes estimates Johnson’s net worth to be $1.2 billion.
It says his net worth is a result of his stakes in the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers and the MLS’ LAFC. He also has a 60% stake in Iowa-based life insurance company EquiTrust, which he purchased in 2015.
Jay-Z
Jay-Z is one of the black billionaires in America too poor to make the Forbes 400 list. His $2.5 billion net worth was not enough to earn him a spot on the prestigious list. The celebrated rapper hit multi-billion status following the sale of his controlling stake in the D’USSÉ Cognac brand for $750 million.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey narrowly missed the cut for the fourth time in a row after having made the ranks for 25 years straight. She has an estimated net worth of $3 billion, making her one of the richest Americans.
According to Forbes, the media mogul made her money from reinvesting profits from her talk show and films like The Color Purple, Beloved, and Selma.
The following prominent Black billionaires also couldn’t make the list:
Tope Awotona ($1.4 billion)
Tyler Perry ($1.4 billion)
Rihanna ($1.4 billion)
Tiger Woods ($1.3 billion)

Kamala Harris again opens up about her work at McDonald’s after Trump called her a liar
kalama Harris made history as the first woman and first Black person to be elected Vice President of the United States of America after running with Joe Biden in 2020.
The eldest child of her immigrant parents, Harris’ mother comes from India and her dad comes from Jamaica. They first met as undergraduates while participating in a civil rights movement at the University of California Berkeley.
However, her parents separated not long after her younger sister, Maya, was born. The sisters moved into a Berkeley apartment with their mother before moving to Montreal, when her mother landed a new job there. After High School, Harris attended Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law to become a prosecutor.
While in college, Harris worked at McDonald’s to earn spending money, she told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle. In her memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, Harris noted that “We weren’t rich in financial terms. But the values we internalized provided a different kind of wealth.”
Harris said the experience working with McDonald’s allowed her to really connect to the financial struggles of ordinary working Americans as she seeks the highest office in the country.
“It was not a small job,” Harris told Ruhle of her McDonald’s job in her 20s. “I did the fries.” She continued, “Part of the reason I even talk about having worked at McDonald’s is because there are people who work at McDonald’s in our country who are trying to raise a family — I worked there as a student, I was a kid — who worked there trying to raise families and pay rent on that.”
“And I think part of the difference between me and my opponent includes our perspective on the needs of the American people and what our responsibility then is to meet those needs.”
Trump has claimed that Harris’ story about having worked at the fast-food chain is “fake”. But, according to an October 2023 press release by McDonald’s, working at the company is common, stating that 1 in 8 Americans have worked under the Golden Arches.
Before becoming U.S. vice president, Harris served as a Senator for California from January 2017 to January 2021. She first ran for office in 2003 and was elected to become the district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, she ran for the attorney general post in the state of California, which she won, making her the first Black woman to hold the position.
As vice president of America, Harris earns around $235,100 per year, a lot more than she made as Senator for California which was around $174,000.
In 2021, Forbes estimated her net worth, which she shares with her husband, Douglas Emhoff, at $7 million. The business magazine noted in 2019 that their assets include an estimated $5.8 million homes in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco as well as retirement accounts worth at least $1.4 million.
After almost four years in office, Forbes now estimates that her net worth, along with her husband, has increased from $7 million to about $8 million, which is roughly 20 times the median net worth of Americans in their age bracket. Besides owning a multimillion-dollar home in Los Angeles, Forbes wrote that the rest of their assets mostly comprise cash, index funds, bonds and pensions.

Diddy’s Mother Says Her Son Is Not A Monster
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ mother is casting doubt on the many allegations leveled against her son. Ms Janice Small Combs reportedly released a statement through her attorney on Sunday, defending her “imperfect” son.
“It is heartbreaking to see my son judged not for the truth, but for a narrative created out of lies…To bear witness to what seems to be like a public lynching of my son before he has had the opportunity to prove his innocence is a pain too unbearable to put into words.
“Like every human being, my son deserves to have his day in court, to share his side finally, and to prove his innocence,” Ms Combs was quoted in the statement.
Her statement comes after some 100 new allegations have been filed against her son and the existing charges brought against him.
Ms Combs also touched on the case between Diddy and her ex-girlfriend Cassie, indicating that just because her son lied at one event does not make him guilty of the remaining allegations.
“My son may not have been entirely truthful about certain things, such as denying he has ever gotten violent with an ex-girlfriend when the hotel’s surveillance showed otherwise.
“…Sometimes, the truth and a lie become so closely intertwined that it becomes terrifying to admit one part of the story, especially when that truth is outside the norm or is too complicated to be believed,” she said.
According to the singer’s mother, many of the allegations were coming from people “seeking financial gain” and not “justice.”
“These individuals saw how quickly my son’s civil legal team settled his ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit, so they believe they can receive a quick payday by falsely accusing my son.
“False allegations of sexual assault thwart true victims of sexual violence from getting the justice they deserve. To make matters worse, the federal government is now using these lies to prosecute my son.”
“…This injustice has been unbearable for our family. The worst part of this ordeal is watching my beloved son be stripped of his dignity, not for what he did, but for what people choose to believe about him,” Diddy’s added.
Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, first sued the Bad Boy founder about a year ago for rape and abuse, while he denied the allegations, the case was within 24 hours. Hotel footage subsequently emerged, indicating that the music mogul was physically assaulting Cassie.
Diddy apologized, but since then there have been many other new allegations, including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
Last week, one of the attorneys for Sean “Diddy” Combs said he intended to file an appeal to have the embattled musician released from prison, pending his trial in court.
The founder of the ‘Bad Boys’ group is said to have already been denied bail twice. Diddy is also said to have hired a powerful legal team, as part of the effort to be released from prison while he awaits trial.
Bianca Censori deactivates her Instagram while Kanye West wipes his account
Bianca Censori has deactivated her Instagram account following reports that she and Kanye West have split and planning to divorce.
The model, 29, had previously shared a slew of racy images on her grid under the handle @bianca.censori, but the page has now vanished without a trace.
Kanye, 47, has also once again wiped his account of all images except for one, which was posted on February 28.
The image shows a WhatsApp exchange with Justin Laboy, who interviewed the Grammy Winner in April.
The message read: ‘I’m closing my Instagram account, My name is Ye. No brand or numbers gonna force me to call myself what they want me to still be.’
Bianca Censori deactivates her Instagram while Kanye West wipes his account amid claims the couple have
On Monday it was reported that Kanye and Bianca had secretly called it quits ‘weeks ago’, with the rapper reportedly ‘ready for divorce’ from the model.
It is said that the Bound 2 hitmaker felt that his wife of almost two years ‘wasn’t as into him as she was in the beginning’ of their relationship.
The couple made their final public outing as they headed on a shopping trip in Tokyo on September 20.
Bianca Censori deactivates her Instagram while Kanye West wipes his account amid claims the couple have
It comes as it’s been reported that Bianca’s split from Kanye was largely influenced by the fact she couldn’t ‘ignore’ her family’s questions about the more troubling part of their relationship, sources have claimed.
On Monday morning TMZ reported that the rapper and his wife have been on the outs for a while and are ‘possibly’ planning to file for divorce.
The rap star has been in Tokyo while Bianca is believed to have returned to her native Australia to be with her family during this tough time.
Now, insiders have claimed the pair had been ‘drifting apart,’ before a recent visit from her loved ones confirmed the end of their romance.
‘They broke up some time ago,’ a source told DailyMail. ‘Bianca started to see the relationship in a new light when her friends and family voiced concerns about the way she was dressing in public and Kanye felt that she wasn’t as into him as she was in the beginning.’
The source continued: ‘There are no hard feelings but she couldn’t ignore her family when they asked her to explain the stranger parts of their relationship. They have broken up before so there is a chance they’ll reunite.
Iran joins the Nuclear boys club?
Recent reports are swirling with speculation that Iran may have conducted an underground nuclear test on October 5, sparking global intrigue and concern. Although there has been no official confirmation from Iran, the United States, or Israel, a series of unusual events has fueled the debate over whether Iran has now become a nuclear power.
The debate was ignited after a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Iran’s Semnan province, near the city of Aradan. The region, notably quiet in terms of seismic activity, had not experienced an earthquake in many years, which has led some to suspect that the tremor was the result of a clandestine nuclear test. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the epicenter was located only 10 kilometers below the surface, with tremors felt as far as Tehran, roughly 110 kilometers away. The proximity of the tremor to a known nuclear power plant has only added to the speculation, as analysts debate whether the earthquake was naturally occurring or artificially induced.
Further deepening the mystery, an earthquake was also felt in Israel around the same time, prompting speculation over whether Iran’s activities could have somehow triggered a quake in its regional adversary. Seismic experts in Israel and the U.S. are now working to determine if Iran may have found a way to generate seismic activity through other means.
Iran’s Ominous Silence
Iran has remained conspicuously silent on the matter, not addressing the rumors of a nuclear test. This silence has only intensified speculation, as nuclear weapons remain a controversial issue in Iranian political discourse. Despite a long-standing fatwa issued in 2003 by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prohibiting the development of nuclear weapons on religious grounds, the subject of nuclear capability has remained central to the nation’s strategic debates. If Iran has indeed crossed the nuclear threshold, it could mark a significant shift in its defense strategy.
Rising Hostilities with Israel
The timing of the suspected nuclear test coincides with growing hostilities between Iran and Israel. On the geopolitical front, tensions have escalated sharply, particularly after U.S. CENTCOM Chief General Michael Kurilla’s visit to Israel, where he reportedly gave the green light for potential military action against Iran. This visit may have prompted Iran to send a message to both Israel and the U.S. about its capabilities. Some analysts believe that the alleged nuclear test was a deliberate signal to deter any imminent attacks, showing Iran’s readiness to defend itself in the event of conflict.
Iran’s response to Israel’s military operations has also intensified in recent weeks. On October 2, Iranian forces reportedly targeted Israel’s Nevatim airbase, further straining relations between the two nations. Iranian officials have accused Israel of orchestrating multiple attacks on Iranian interests, including the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah on September 28.
A New Geopolitical Landscape?
Iran’s possible nuclear ambitions also come amid strengthened ties with both Russia and China. Russia has been a longstanding ally of Iran, and Tehran’s collaboration with Moscow appears to be growing stronger. Reports suggest that Iranian pilots have been training with Russian forces, and Iran may soon acquire Russian SU-35 bombers, bolstering its military capabilities. Iran’s acquisition of the advanced S-400 air defense system from Russia would further elevate its deterrence capabilities, particularly against Israeli F-35 fighter jets.
China, too, has maintained a close relationship with Iran. A massive $400 billion economic and military deal between the two countries has solidified Iran’s resistance against Western sanctions and bolstered its regional standing. China’s support provides Iran with additional leverage in its ongoing confrontations with Israel and the West.
The Road Ahead
With U.S. elections approaching on November 4, tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States are reaching a boiling point. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has already called for aggressive action against Iran, attempting to outmaneuver President Joe Biden on foreign policy. If Israel, backed by the U.S., decides to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, a new and potentially devastating conflict could emerge in the Middle East.
Iran’s alleged underground nuclear test-whether confirmed or not-has sparked intense speculation and concern. While Tehran may remain tight-lipped, the geopolitical ramifications are clear: Iran has sent a powerful message to Israel and the West that it is ready to defend itself by any means necessary. As the world watches with bated breath, the question remains: Has Iran officially joined the nuclear club, and what will the consequences be for the region and beyond?

Zimbabwe permits resettled farmers to sell land
Zimbabwe’s government announced a major shift to its land policy on Tuesday, allowing beneficiaries of its land reforms to sell or transfer their farms – but only to “indigenous Zimbabweans.”
Ministers speaking after a meeting of the cabinet in Harare said the new policy was aimed at “unlocking value.”
All farmers who benefited from land reforms launched in 2000 will now be issued with a “bankable, registrable and transferable document of tenure,” said information minister Jenfan Muswere.
He said the government was simultaneously putting an “indefinite moratorium on the issuance of any new 99-year leases or permits for agricultural land.”
The announcement appeared to herald the end of Zimbabwe’s land reform programme which saw large swathes of land being seized from white land owners and parcelled out free of charge to indigenous blacks.
Here is Muswere’s announcement in full:
“There have been varying levels of accountability from the farmers with a significant proportion of the farmers feeling no obligation to pay back loans advanced.
“Consequently, the government has remained saddled with debt emanating from unpaid agricultural loans by many farmers.
The menace of land barons who have little or no regard for our town and country planning laws and policies has put a strain on the local authorities’ infrastructure. The land barons develop haphazard and unplanned settlements with no basic services such as water, electricity, sewer reticulation and stormwater drainage.
“Against this background and in line with section 292 of the constitution read together with sections 289, 293 and 294 that obligates the state to give security of tenure to every person and to alienate for value agricultural land among other requirements, the government will implement the following measures:
“All land held by beneficiaries of the land reform programme under 99-year leases; offer letters and permits will now be held under a bankable, registrable and transferable document of tenure to be issued by the government of Zimbabwe to beneficiaries. As such, beneficiaries of the land reform programme will now have enhanced security of tenure to the land they legitimately hold.
“This new policy will invariably be informed by the following guidelines:
“Priority will be given to veterans of the liberation struggle, women and youths. Security of tenure to all agricultural land regularised under this programme will at all times only be transferable among indigenous Zimbabwe. The land targeted for the new land tenure system will exclude communal land that is under the jurisdiction of traditional chiefs. Accordingly, the government hereby issues an indefinite moratorium on the issuance of any new 99-year leases or permits for agricultural land.”

Uganda: Soldier shoots self dead after killing Indian boss over ‘little pay’
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema addressing the press
Police registered a double murder case by shooting in which 41-year-old Thirumalesh Itikala was gunned down by Private James Tolit Opio, a 38-year-old soldier belonging to Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
Police’s North Kyoga regional public relations officer (PRO) SP Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the shooting incident saying it was at around 9:30am.
According to SP Okema, Itikala was the site engineer and manager of Royal Velko Joint Venture Ltd and a resident of Mbiko Landing Site in Namasale Town Council, Amolatar District.
“It’s alleged that Opio, a soldier attached to Namasale Infantry Detach and deployed at Royal Velko Joint Venture Ltd site, reported back at work on October 1.On October 3, he went for a disco in the nearby trading centre and went back to his work place again on October 4, 2024 at around 4am,” SP Okema narrated.
He added: “Surprisingly on Friday morning, Opio reported for duty complaining to his fellow guards of less allowances paid to him.”
Police say that Opio emerged in front of Itikala’s office and shot the Indian in the chest as he (Itikala) was communicating on phone.
“Opio then left through the main gate of the site for about 50 meters and shot himself in the neck and died instantly,” Okema told Monitor in a brief statement on Friday.
Itikala was rushed to Amolatar Health Center IV where health authorities pronounced him dead on arrival.
“The scene of crime was visited by a team of police officers led by the Amolatar Distritct Police Commander, scene examined and documented. Police also recorded statements from eye witnesses, Okema noted.
By Friday afternoon, both bodies were still at Amolatar Health Center IV, pending postmortem.
“This is a sad and unfortunate incident. We appeal to supervisors at all workplaces to always engage staff or security deployed to provide protection to listen to their problems and act accordingly,” Okema emphasized.
Royal Velko Joint Venture Ltd, was contracted by the Ministry of Water and Environment to construct a Shs12 billion water pipe system in Namasale Town Council.
Apologise or leave Uganda – Chief of Defence tells US ambassador in escalating row
Uganda’s first son and military chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has told America’s ambassador William Popp to apologize to veteran President Museveni or depart the East African nation, escalating diplomatic tensions between the countries.
In an earlier post on X, Gen Muhoozi cited “disrespecting our beloved and celebrated president and undermining the constitution of Uganda” as reason behind the move.
“If this current US ambassador does not apologize to mzee (Museveni) personally by Monday morning (9:00am) for his undiplomatic behavior in our country, we will demand he leaves Uganda,” he said on Friday.
In a barrage of posts, the first son appeared to suggest that the US has recently been aiming against Museveni’s 38-year ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, which shot to power in 1986.
“We have no problem with the USA. As I have said many times, it is a country we love and admire. But lately we have a lot of evidence that they have been working against the NRM government,” Gen Muhoozi explained.
“If ANYBODY is STUPID enough to attack us here in our country, I can only promise them hell, destruction and defeat!! Afghanistan would look like a nice picnic compared to our resistance. Our fathers showed us the way, sacrifice is better than slavery,” he added.
By press time, the US was yet to officially respond to Gen Muhoozi’s controversial posts coming barely a week after the US sanctioned four former top officers in Uganda’s armed forces.
“We are trying to analyse the situation,” a source at the US Mission told the East African.
On October 2, the US Department of State said it was “taking action against police officials Bob Kagarura, Alex Mwine, Elly Womanya and Hamdani Twesigye due to their involvement in gross violations of human rights.”
The US had previously designated several high-profile Ugandan officials, including former deputy military chief Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, parliament speaker Anita Among and minister Amos Lugoloobi- along with their families.
The Department indicated that Elwelu was blacklisted over “extrajudicial killings committed by members of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF)” while the rest were targeted due to alleged corruption.
Other key Ugandans under US sanctions include former police chief Gen Kale Kayihura, ex-spy chief Maj-Gen Abel Kandiho, Uganda Prisons chief Johnson Byabashaija and football federation boss Moses Magogo, who is the speaker’s husband.
Museveni accepted Popp’s credentials in September 2023, confirming him as Washington’s diplomatic representative to Uganda, also known as the head of US mission.
Uganda and USA have had relatively good diplomatic ties lasting over 60 years despite repeated recent veiled rebukes by Museveni, aimed at the West.
Diplomatic law
Diplomatic missions operate under the scope of international law drawn from article 9 of the Vienna convention.
The law provides that the receiving state (in this case Uganda) may at any time without having to explain its decision- declare a diplomatic staff of a sending state (in this case USA) persona non grata.
HH’s monumental failures- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba
HH’s monumental failures
Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;
He was touted as a farmer, yet he has done more damage to the agro sector, than any other President previously.
It is October, and farming inputs are not in districts sheds and warehouses and camps for distribution.
He was presented as an economic manager, yet he has damaged the economy with, especially careless and dangerous decisions made especially those regarding the mining sector, energy sector and commerce and trade.
Further only companies associated with him such as Aflife and Saturnia Regna have benefitted from Government business acquiring $40million Environmental Fund from the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development,or selling derelict buildings to Government or its agencies.
Zambians had to rise in unison when Zambia National Service (ZNS) appeared to buy a farm for $13million from ZAMBEEF, without tender process or viability of the farm.
He was touted as a business man with remarkable acumen of success and that he would promulgate business friendly policies, he has become the worst enenmy of the business sector with small, medium and large sector facing closures and collapse.
I’m therefore not surprised by the harsh but realistic assement below;
Sharpest decline in private sector performance for over four years
September Purchase Managers’ Index (PMI) data signalled a further decline in business conditions across the Zambian private sector.
The downturn gathered momentum and was the sharpest since August 2020. as output, new orders and employment contracted at steeper rates.
The impact of load shedding and severe power cuts continued to restrict business operations and place strain on capacity.
Moreover, backlogs of work rose at the fastest pace since January 2020. Although companies remained upbeat regarding the year-ahead outlook for output, confidence
dropped to the lowest in six months.
At the same time, higher supplier and energy costs pushed overall input prices up.
Subsequently, firms raised their output charges, with the rate of inflation quickening
The headline figure derived from the suryey is the Purchasing Managers’ IndexTM (PMI).
Readings above 50.0 signal an improvement in business conditions on the previous month, while readings below 50.0 show a
deterioration.
The headline PMI posted 45.6 in September, down notably from 48.3 in August, to signal a strong decline in the health of the Zambian private sector.
The latest data indicated a tenth successive monthly downturn in business conditions, and the fastest deterioration since August 2020.
Load shedding and the impact of lengthy power cuts constrained firms again in September, as output contracted at the sharpest pace since February 202.
Reduced capacity and lower purchasing power at customers as energy costs rose weighed on demand conditions. New orders declined for the second month running, with the pace of decrease accelerating
