3 WOMEN ON THE RUN AFTER STEALING A PHONE, MONEY AND BANK CARDS FROM A SWEDISH NATIONAL

A Swedish national by the name of Svensson Karl Magnus aged 61 as reported having been robbed by three woman who are currently on the run.

Accodring to a report with Mwebantu, the three women allegedly stole Mr Magnus’ phone, K35, 000 cash, 900 Swedish krona and two bank cards.

Mr Magnus had gone to Ndola for the recently held Trade Fair.

The incident is alleged to have happened on Saturday last week at Starscape Hotel in Ndola in which Svensson Karl Magnus aged 61, a Swedish national of unknown house number Ingalate Avenue, Chelstone in Lusaka reported that three unknown females stole his property.

Mr Magnus said among the items stolen include an iPhone 13 Promax valued at K26,000, K35,500, 900 Swedish krona and two bank cards.

And Copperbelt province commanding officer Sharon Zulu confirmed the incident stating that the complainant, who came from Lusaka on June 28 for the Trade Fair, has been lodging at Starscape Hotel room number 16 since that time, because he was still looking for some business opportunities within the Copperbelt.

She said on July 15 this year around 18:00 hours he met three women who were lodged at the same hotel.

“These women were drinking beer in the beer garden. The complainant was invited to join them. He was offered castle lager and the women requested for his cellphone so that they could play music. At around 21:00 hours, all of them went to the complainant’s room where they continued to drink, “Mrs Zulu said.

She said at around 22:00 hours, he fell into a deep sleep.

Mrs Zulu said the following day around 10:00 hours, Mr Magnus was awakened by one of his workers Mala Yamba who went to check on him at the hotel after her phone was failing to go through.

“He found that the money he had in his cellphone and bank cards were missing. His room was locked from outside and the women went away with the keys. The hotel management used the spare key to open the door. The matter was reported to the police,”she said.

Mr Zulu said police officers visited the crime scene and viewed the footage showing one suspect at the reception the time she came to book a room.

“The receptionist confirmed that the women checked out at around 05:00 hours. They have gone away with the keys to the room which they booked. The names written in the ledgers book for the suspect are Sarah Wanjiru John of Mombasa Kenya,”she said.

Mrs Zulu said when Mr Magnus contacted Stanbic Bank customer service, it was confirmed that money amounting to K30,000 was withdrawn at around 06:30 hours at Stanbic Bank, Kafubu Mall .

She said police have since instituted investigations.

Ghana’s return to the IMF within three years underscores its deeper economic problems

0

Ghana hasn’t been able to withstand economic shocks or manage its debt because it hasn’t dealt with structural economic problems.

Ghana is again seeking assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to enable the country to meet its payments to the rest of the world and restore the health of government finances. It is the second time in the past three years and 17th since independence in 1957 that Ghana has turned to the IMF for help.

The latest foray reverses the current administration’s earlier stance that it would avoid approaching the multilateral body because of the conditions that come with its assistance. Ghana’s finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta said in May 2022 that government was “confident in its homegrown solutions such as the e-levy in getting the economy to recover … seeking a bailout from the IMF is not an option”.

Ghana’s approaches to the IMF, which have averaged every four years over the past 65 years, tell a story of recurrent failure of government to properly build the economy to withstand internal and external shocks. Ghana’s lack of fiscal discipline, and its recent history of dependence on foreign financing – with as much as 48% of the total public debt being held by external investors – leaves the country vulnerable to swings in investor sentiment, and accompanying portfolio investment selloffs.

The request to IMF also underscores the fact that Ghana has much deeper structural economic problems. These require a multi-stakeholder approach to resolve. Unfortunately, the pervasive and deeply entrenched nature of the country’s Fourth Republican clientelist politics which manifests in a ‘winner take all’ approach to governance has often distorted a much-needed national debate on what needs to be done and how it must be done. Ghana must fix the structural problems – such as its over-reliance on primary commodity exports – and live within its means. As we argue in an upcoming research project, there is a greater political leaning towards shorter-term goals of maintaining regime stability or forcing a change in the regime.

Ghana came out of the last IMF programme in 2019 with some significant macroeconomic gains.

It had been forced to tap IMF assistance to deal with global and local economic shocks – the same as now. These included the spillovers of the slowdown in China, the 2014-2017 commodities price slump, reckless spending in the lead up to often highly contested elections especially in 2012 and 2016, and a prolonged domestic electricity crisis known locally as ‘dumsor’.

Ghana’s current external shocks are related to the pandemic and Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Internally, the government has also recklessly managed its finances with excessive borrowing, resulting in a looming debt crisis. The country now spends about a third (27%) of its expenditures in just servicing debt alone, not including principal repayments. This is often more than the compensation of workers on the government payroll, estimated at 26% of total expenditure in 2022.

The depth of Ghana’s mess

A review of recent economic data shows why it was inevitable that Ghana would seek IMF assistance.

Real GDP growth slowed from an average of 6.9% from 2017-2019 to 0.4% in 2020 during the pandemic but picked up to 4.7% in 2021. The November 2021 forecast of 5.6% real growth in GDP in 2022 is likely to be lower because of rising price pressures. This is mainly driven by food and refined petroleum products due to the Russia-Ukraine war and global supply chain bottlenecks. Ghana’s inflation, as measured by a basket of goods and services, hit 29.8% in June 2022 – the highest level in 20 years.

Rising prices have forced the Bank of Ghana to raise its policy rate by 4.5 percentage points to 19% by May 2022 in an attempt to tame inflation. Commercial banks have in turn raised the rate at which they lend to businesses and individuals. The policy rate last hit 20% in January 2018 and drastically reduced to 13.5% until the recent hikes started in November 2021. The unintended consequence of stemming inflation is a potential stifling of economic activity through crowding out of the private sector by the government and high cost of capital.

In addition, the local currency – the cedi – had depreciated by almost 20% against the US dollar as of June 2022, making imports more expensive, forcing prices of goods and services upwards.

Ghana’s economic challenges have been made worse by the country’s reliance on portfolio flows. This is the foreign money that moves in and out of countries in search of the best investment returns. Unlike money that builds factories, these flows are more sensitive to a country’s short-term economic and financial developments. Given Ghana’s significant borrowings from commercial rather than multilateral development financiers, the country has become more vulnerable to the rising cost of debt. Multilateral development institutions lend for longer at more reasonable rates.

Of Ghana’s total public debt of US$55.1 billion (78% of GDP) as of March 2022, 40.2% (US$28.3 billion) was owed to external parties. And of the external debt, about 57% was owed to commercial creditors, predominantly in Eurobonds.

To add salt to Ghana’s economic wounds, rating agencies downgraded the country’s sovereign risk scores earlier this year. This significantly limited the governmet’s ability to borrow on the international capital markets to finance the budget.

Ghana’s fiscal policymaking has shown a bias towards overspending during good times, with little being saved to help when there are downturns or external shocks.

This is largely driven by commodity price cycles – oil, cocoa and gold – and fiscal excesses during election periods. Ruling parties often overspend ahead of elections to buy votes and then tighten the purse strings afterwards.

So, what should Ghana differently this time round?

Way forward

The following could be a guide to ensure that Ghana benefits from its new deal with the IMF:

First, Ghana should use the IMF programme to negotiate some debt restructuring with commercial and multilateral creditors. The country failed to take advantage of earlier schemes like the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI). Debt restructuring would create the space to spend on priorities such as food and fuel. However, the country must urgently reinstate the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018 – which was suspended during the pandemic – with the 5% cap on fiscal deficits in any given year. It must also publish an updated medium-term debt management plan that either caps or places a moratorium on the contraction of non-concessional loans for a while.

Second, Ghana must implement fully any agreed structural reforms to put the economy on a sound footing. This includes significant cuts in the largesse and waste in government and public service delivery. The President must cut the size of his government and enforce key performance targets for key socio-economic sectors such as public finances, education, energy, and health, among others. Other reforms should include the aggressive restructuring of state-owned enterprises and hiring of competent hands, removing of some, and improvements in the targeting of subsidies as well as trimming the government payroll and flagship initiatives like free secondary schooling. The government must also insist on a strong social protection element, especially for cash transfer programmes such as Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) and capitation grants for public basic schools.

Thirdly, Ghana must aggressively grow and diversify its small open economy to reduce reliance on primary commodities such as cocoa, gold and oil. These are the major export earners for the country but are subject to significant price volatility. Ghana has a great opportunity to pursue green growth policies in new industrial clusters such as the critical minerals value chain and renewables. These can be supported by a reinvigorated Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) and the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), among other players.
Lastly, Ghanaians, especially the two main parties, must stop over politicising the economic issues. Populism is clouding effective decision-making. What the current crisis reveals again is the urgent need for broad-based national development plan or framework. The Conversation

Socialism is satanic and I will never be a Socialist and I do not believe Zambia shall ever return to socialism- Dr Nevers Mumba

LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT RESPECT AND HONOR:
Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba

Mr and Mrs “Godless” had three children. The baby was called HUMANISM, the teenager was called SOCIALISM and the adult was called COMMUNISM. All the children call each other COMRADES.

I will never be a Socialist and I do not believe Zambia shall ever return to socialism. Life is progressive. Different ideologies serve different seasons. To insist on keeping an ideology whose purpose has expired is retrogressive in every sense.

I will never be a socialist because I am a Christian and Zambia shall not return to Socialism because she is now a Christian Nation.

In early 80’s our founding President Kenneth Kaunda decided to graduate his policy of humanism to the next level which he called SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM. As a young Pastor in Kitwe, I led a group of Church leaders who opposed this intention. We fought until Dr Kaunda dropped the idea.

We understood then as we understand now that the underlying belief of socialism is that God is not the center of all activity but man. It further suggested that Christianity was a hindrance to the smooth propagation of socialism and its elder brother, communism.

It is for this reason we had so much persecution of Christians in Eastern Europe, USSR and China. We called these communities the IRON CURTAIN nations. The few Churches in these countries became known as “Under ground churches.” Christians were imprisoned, killed publicly sometimes being fed to lions in public arenas.

It is for this reason that the path of socialism cannot be the Zambian path as we have already chosen to become a Christian Nation.
I shall leave the discussion of the actual meaning the socialist ideology to a later date.

The reason for this short introductory note however, is to state that as much opposed as I am to socialism, I have no moral or even legal right to call those who believe in it as twits, minions or puppets. Leadership is about honor and respect for each other’s beliefs. That’s the intention of a democratic dispensation. I am therefore appalled by colleagues in the name of politics that belittle, insult and disrespect those who hold different views.

If one has an issue with a friend I hang out with, insulting or belittling me is not the mature way of expressing such a concern. State your case and let the people judge who has a more helpful friend.
Time to abandon politics of hate is now. We have an opportunity to start afresh as a nation. We can build a strong nation on the rainbow of our differences.

Let me close by stating that, it is an insult to my intellect and pan african spirit for someone to suggest that since I have friends in the Brenthurst Foundation then I have surrendered my brains to those friends. Those days are over. These days relationships must be mutually beneficial without a big and young brother. Zambia is not inferior to the US. We are partners who can agree and disagree on many things, and that we have done, many times. But we cannot be an island in a moving global community.

Let us integrate without losing who we are in the process. We are mature enough to achieve this.

LUNGU IS STRESSED

… I don’t want to say he looked drunk – Mweetwa

By Kombe Mataka

UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says former president Edgar Lungu is stressed.
Lungu when PF members of parliament and cadres thronged his house in Ibex on Tuesday to offer solidarity to his wife, Esther, whose 15 flats in State Lodge is an interest of the Drug Enforcement Commission, said it was good he gave up power so that Zambians could compare
which one was better.

He told the cheering crowd that many people including Antonio Mwanza told him to resist conceding defeat following.

“Antonio when you blamed me for giving up power, a lot of you were saying, ‘you should resist’. But I can assure you it was the right thing to do, so that you can see and compare… We are standing head and shoulder above them now,” Lungu said, in reference to President Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND government.

He said one doesn’t need to be very intelligent to know that he is next after his wife’s investigation by DEC.

“So I am ready. They say I am hiding behind the immunity. I am not hiding behind anything. I know what is going on. The aim is just to make sure that they kill PF, they kill my political life. I am still politically active although not in leadership. But I can still give an opinion. I still have influence. They are worried about that. I have said I am no longer there but I am a living being. In short you can consult me,” said Lungu.

“So they want me out of it completely but you can kill the body but you can’t kill the soul. You can’t kill the ideas. So there are people who believe in what we believed in as PF and we still believe in…People have been able to compare oranges and they can tell which ones are wholesome and which ones are rotten.”

But Mweetwa, who is also Southern Province minister, said the loss of power had finally dawned on Lungu.
“When the people were talking, they could not hear what people were saying. Now that power has left him, those opportunities they were abusing have become difficult to access. They are now beginning to get sober. They are now beginning to sober up. That is when they have begun to realise and speaking like this. I sympathise with president Lungu. When he was speaking, he looked…I don’t want to say he looked drunk. I think the fairest is to say he is stressed,” he said. “Whatever is stressing him in a free environment where freedoms are guaranteed is something that we need inquire into. The former president is human. He needs to enjoy peace too. He is under a safe administration. I want him to know that he should not stress. He is safe under this administration.”
Mweetwas said there was nothing to compare between governance in the PF and that of the UPND.

“PF were drunk with power coupled with corruption. The country degenerated as though it did not have a leader. The country began to be run by cartels in the run up to the elections. There was
practically no government running the country. If the cartels had bulldozed themselves and got into office by now hell would have broken loose in Zambia. So when you see the way they are talking, it is because they were too drunk with power,” he said. “PF were drunk with power and what makes leaders get drunk with power is when you abandon adherence to rule of law. Rule of law is what sets the framework or jurisdiction of your mandate so that your trappings of authority, of power, will not make us go beyond the province of our authority using human judgment, using emotions, logic and thinking. That is why the President [Hakainde Hichilema] is insisting on the rule of law. So when you abandon rule of law, you get drunk with power.”

And Mweetwa said police should do its own investigations concerning revelations by Lungu that individuals like former media director Antonio Mwanza and others unknown had asked Lungu not to hand over power.

“As a party we don’t want to be instigating the operations of arms of government. We want to leave the matter to the professionals to make a determination that there was a travesty of the law. However, the issue for us is that refusing to hand over power in Zambia is treason and that is why we have relevant security agencies to ensure that there was no breach of the Constitution,” he said.

“We are very clear in our minds as UPND and the President has insisted and made it abundantly clear, in no uncertain circumstances, that when our time comes to leave we shall leave the stage graciously. You have seen that the President is walking the talk in so far as his election promises are concerned. Fundamental amongst them is adherence to the rule of law. There is no opportunity therefore that at some stage, the UPND will become a menace to the people. But we are also fully aware that power when abused you can get drank.”

Against all odds, comrade M’membe will win by a landslide in 2026

Against all odds, comrade M’membe will win by a landslide in 2026

By Christopher C Mulwanda

Record breaking entails that you do something unusual; beyond people’s expectations.

It implies changing the status quo by proving critics wrong. There’s always the first time. Human perceptions and predictions may be limited to prevailing circumstances but my faith tells me that it’s quite definite that Zambia’s fashionable Socialist Party (SP) will emerge victorious in the aftermath of the 12th August 2026 general polls.

If you truly feel the excruciating sting of economic bees then you may realise that change of regime may be inevitable in 2026.The UPND should brace themselves for a rude shock as the ironic twist of fate spells painful defeat for the Bally-led regime in 2026. The SP will undoubtedly win by a landslide because the electorate have regretted having voted for the UPND whose governance system purely hinges on vengeance and vindictiveness, mainly targeting officials from the previous regime. This is uncalled for as it soils the sacred character of democracy and human justice. Besides, the cost of living has skyrocketed under the new dawn government, making it worse than it was during the harshly castigated PF regime. Imagine a bag of mealie-meal costing over K150! That’s quite obnoxious. It is a stark reality that the UPND has failed to honour some of their campaign promises so soon.

The recent reduction of fuel prices may be deemed to be a mockery and affront to a Zambian’s dignity. For example, you increase fuel by K4 and down the lane you reduce by K1.32, what kind of thinking is that? The so-called new dawn regime should have reduced the price of this commodity by at least K5 to K6, downscaling the price to a figure way below K17 per litre. Even if the price of fuel had remained static at K17, the citizens of this country would still have good reason to castigate the regime because UPND’s sweet promise was that they would reduce the price of the commodity. They should stop insulting our intelligence.

Today Zambians regret having enthroned HH and his cohorts. They optimistically thought he would reduce mealie meal price to K50 and fuel price to less than K10 per liter. For this reason, we need the Socialist Party that is anchored on humility, honesty, equity and solidarity. Let us all rally behind the socialist fire brand in the name of FM8 (Fred M’membe the eighth president).

President HH should cut on unnecessary presidential trips which he strongly spoke against when PF was in power. Now that he has tasted that power is sweet, he is ever up and down, making himself a very good presidential tourist with over 20 foreign trips in barely 11 months. Of what worth were some of those trips other than the USA, Glasgore and Malawi trips? We are blessed with a black John Walker, the great kamwendo mundeke. I will not mention him because kuti bakukonka as their custom is!

Zambians must get geared for harsher times under the Bally-led regime, but the good thing is that the UPND is announcing its exit in August, 2026. Just like they came, so will they pack and go. I beg you the people of Zambia to show the UPND an exit sign through the ballot power. Vote Dr Fred M’membe and the SP into power because they understand the citizens’ challenges.

All the UPND knows is to summon former and current PF officials at the expense of national development. The late president Michael Sata had no time to waste on persecuting political opponents. Instead, he endeavoured to build the nation and today we can enjoy the unprecedented development, including Bally himself because the nice roads and the international conference he will be using for the AU summit were constructed under the Chagwa-led regime. Umuntu aletasha, napapata. Anyway, do not worry comrades, we will be economically emancipated in 2026 after FM8 and the SP win by landslide. I regret having voted Bally into office. I even sold my dogs because I can’t feed them.

HH SO ARROGANT, DRUNK WITH POWER
…we’ll withdraw Obasanjo, Koroma and Johnson honours – M’membe

By Staff Reporter

DR Fred M’membe has pledged to withdraw “those disgraceful honours” conferred on Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Bai Koroma and Ellen Sirleaf Johnson “in the name of our homeland immediately we assume office”.
On Thursday, President Hakainde Hichilema conferred the Order of the Eagle of Zambia First Division on former presidents Obasanjo (Nigeria), Koroma (Sierra Leone) and Johnson (Liberia) for promoting democracy and improving the living standards in their countries and other places such as Zambia.

But Dr M’membe, the Socialist Party president, charged that the reason given for the honours is false.
Instead he urged President Hichilema to retreat from the pro-imperialism path he has taken and prioritise the interests of Zambians, “not the Brenthurst Foundation”.

“We reject the decision by the President to bestow State honours on those who helped him ascend to power. With all due respect to Mr Obasanjo, Mr Koroma, or Mrs Johnson, there is absolutely nothing that they have done for Zambia that merits them those honours. No one in Monze, Chadiza, Kanyama or Luwingu knows anything done by anyone of them to promote democracy or raise the standards of living of Zambians. Yes, they are clearly important to the President, like Mr Greg Mills, but they have no relationship with Zambians. It is unacceptable and abuse of office for the President to use State honours to celebrate his friends or those who helped him in his political career,” Dr M’membe wrote on his Facebook page. “The President is becoming so arrogant and drunk with power that he is no longer afraid to expose to Zambians who actually bought him the presidency. He thinks the time has now come to start celebrating these people and to impose them on us as our heroes. No, the Brenthurst Foundation and their agents shall never be our heroes. We reject any attempt to launder the image of those who are committed to recolonising Zambia, Africa, and to securing our minerals – led by copper and cobalt – on the cheap. To this end, we promise to withdraw those disgraceful honours conferred in the name of our homeland immediately we assume office. We urge the recipients to either return them to avoid future embarrassment or to enjoy them as much as possible for the lifespan of the presidency of the one who issued them. Our national honours are sacred and must never be used to launder members of Brenthurst Foundation.”

He said if there is any person who deserves to be honoured for their contribution to fostering democratic outcomes, it is late president Rupiah Banda.

“And that is for the important role that Mr Banda played to get Mr Edgar Lungu to concede defeat and ensure a smooth transition. Yes, Mr Koroma and Jakaya Kikwete, the former president of Tanzania, helped in the transition discussions but it was Mr Banda who led and even hosted the talks that brought the outgoing president and the president-elect to the negotiating table. But we know that the President cannot honour Mr Banda – even posthumously – and Mr Kikwete because they are not members of the Brenthurst Foundation – the only thread that ties the three people he has honoured,” Dr M’membe argued. “There are many Zambians who have contributed to the advancement of democracy but have never been honoured. Who, for instance, can forget the role played by Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, Simon Zukas, Brebner Changala and their OCiDA organisation in standing up to the last regime and advancing democracy? Yet all these don’t matter because – well, they are not board members of the Brenthust Foundation!”

He explained his opposition to the awards.
“Yesterday [Thursday], at a hastily arranged investiture ceremony, the President of Zambia conferred the Order of the Eagle of Zambia First Division – one of the country’s highest honours – on three advisory board members of Brenthurst Foundation, a mining lobby group established by the Oppenheimer family to secure a low mining tax regime in Africa. We say hastily arranged because the official gazette notice for the conferment of these presidential honours was only published in the Government Gazette on 13 July 2022 – literally hours before the awards were conferred the following day!” Dr M’membe noted. “The members of the Brenthurst Foundation who were given State honours are Mr Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria; Mrs Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, the former president of Liberia; and Mr Ernest Bai Koroma, the former president of Sierra Leone. The President claimed that he was honouring the three Brenthurst Foundation members for promoting democracy and improving the living standards in their countries and other places such as Zambia. This is false. The real reason the three former presidents are being honoured is that they are all board members of the Brenthurst Foundation, the Johannesburg-based organisation led by Mr Greg Mills that supported the campaigns of the current President when he was in opposition. (Mr Mills is the author of the book that the President went to launch in Johannesburg in January this year using state resources). Anyone who doubts this information simply has to check the details on the website of the Brebthurst Foundation.”

Dr M’membe explained that there is one thread that runs through the three recipients: “they are all influencers, the ‘big boys’ and ‘big girls’, as our people would say, used by the Brenthurst Foundation to make the necessary government deals for the benefit of their backers, including the Oppenheimers”.

“Our people are increasingly beginning to know the Brenthurst Foundation and to rightly despise the huge sway that Mr Mills and his organisation appear to have on the President. Zambians hate foreign control, especially of their leaders. Zambians know that the Brenthurst Foundation is this week set to have its advisory meeting in Lusaka, possibly to be hosted by the President of Zambia, that brings together all their puppets in one place. To diffuse this growing anger against the foreign forces that appear to be controlling the President, these awards were hastily organised and awarded to coincide with the AU Heads of State meeting,” he charged. “The truth is that these people are being awarded as part of the propaganda to launder the Brenthurst Foundation and their sponsors as legitimate allies of Africa. The puppet masters are going for resource rich African countries and making deals with their puppets aimed at securing precious minerals through questionable tax holidays. They are after the diamonds in Sierra Leone, the gold in Liberia, the oil in Nigeria, the copper and cobalt in Zambia, and other rich minerals in several Africans countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Using the Brenthurst Foundation, and as part of an integrated takeover of Africa, they are propagating on the continent a very vicious right-wing politics that is out to launder racist white capital and its Western backers. The fact that we Africans are not rising to protest their ongoing recolonisation of Zambia and Africa is a mark of how well they have concealed their intentions or how well they have used their puppets to secure their goals. But we can see through them.”

Dr M’membe noted that President Hichilema gets angry when told he is a puppet of foreign interests.
“But if he were to sit down and carefully reflect, he will realise that what makes him angry is the accuracy of that description. It is wrong for anyone, including puppets, to use public office to start dishing out State honours to their masters or their masters’ agents,” said Dr M’membe. “We urge the President to retreat from the pro-imperialism path he has taken and prioritise the interests of Zambians, not the Brenthurst Foundation. It is him, not Mr Greg Mills or the Brenthurst Foundation that Zambians voted for. Mr President, please stop listening to or doing the bidding of foreigners and begin to pay attention to what those who elected you say.”

Brenthurst has captured our President – Mwamba

By Kombe Mataka

FORMER Ambassador to Ethiopia Emmanuel Mwamba says the country is under state capture by the Brenthurst Foundation.

Mwamba told The Mast that the honouring of three board members of the Foundation in their capacity as former heads of state was evidence that their interests were overriding that of the government and State House.

On Thursday, President Hakainde Hichilema conferred the Order of the Eagle of Zambia, First Division on former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson (Liberia) and Ernest Bai Koroma (Sierra Leone) for their distinguished efforts in promoting democracy. President Hichilema said the three former heads of state were honoured, at a special investiture ceremony at State House, “for their outstanding work in the promotion and advancement of democracy, and delivery of democratic dividends for citizens both within and outside their respective countries.”

Bwalya said President Hichilema “has especially noted the defining roles played by each one of the recipient former heads of state in establishing true multiparty democratic outcomes not only in their respective countries but also further beyond and anchoring this as the beacon for improving the living standards of citizens”
But Mwamba said the relationship with Brenthurst Foundation promotes corporate, commercial and private interest.
“There is an advisory unit at State House that is on their private pay role. They are many. I don’t want to mention them. Then we have two from South Africa. I don’t want to offend people but it is the
truth,” he said.

“The concern there is why would you have special advisors to the President that are funded by a private entity when the government has provided for special advisors? They are catered for. I mean, we don’t need outsiders. The relationship with Brenthurst Foundation promotes
corporate, commercial and private interest. That is our objection and this is called State Capture in other countries. Brenthurst Foundation has captured our President. They are making him honour board members of Brenthurst Foundation. All those that were honoured are members of
Brenthurst Foundation.”
Mwamba said the President’s corporate interests vested in the Brenthurst Foundation was against the Pan African ideals.

“The insult is that we are hosting the African Union [summit] which promotes African
values and national values and we are doing this in the midst of these concerns,” he said. “State House is the heart of power in our country. It cannot be defiled in the manner the President has allowed it to be defiled where we have this private interest funding.”
Mwamba advised President Hichilema to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.
“Zambians voted for him under the Constitution.

The President has an obligation to follow the Constitution. The Constitution gives him infrastructure to run this country. Honouring heads of state is within the law. I haven’t said it is an illegality but all the three at have been honoured are members of the Brenthurst Foundation,” he said. “What he is doing is abusing the law. The problem is he denied. He had to create a State visit to South Africa to go and launch a [Greg Mills] book. That is abuse of State resources. He went into Lower Zambezi, they held this private meeting organised by Brenthurst Foundation and they brought all these security officials from South Africa. Again I don’t know what they were discussing. The next thing we saw was the establishment of AFRICOM. So clearly these things are hinging on national security and hinging on the sovereignty of our country.”
Mwamba added that they “are only doing it openly now that he has given them
licence”.

“They are at State House. He has given them a venue in Livingstone. He is bringing them to launder them so that Zambians have no suspicions about Brenthurst Foundation. Their interest is across Africa. They identifying candidates that they are pushing hard that they could promote their values not their nations’ values,” said Mwamba.

LUSAKA – 17/07/22
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says no African should go to bed without food because the continent is too endowed.
The President was speaking in his welcoming remarks at the 4th AU mid-year coordination meeting at Kenneth Kaunda wing – Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka today.

The theme of the four day meetings is: “Building resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent: strengthen agriculture, accelerate the human capital, social and economic development.”

President Hichilema said the 4th AU mid-year coordination meeting brought together members of the bureau of the assembly of the AU and the chairpersons of the regional economic communities in Africa, to discuss pertinent issues related to the African integration agenda and other issues affecting the continent.

The President said the 4th AU mid-year coordination meeting was borne out of the need to ensure efficiency in the execution of continental programmes for the benefit of Africans.

He said the meeting’s theme is a reminder of the urgent need for deep reflection and paying special attention to the welfare and wellbeing of Africans.

President Hichilema said with favourable agronomical conditions, the African continent is well placed to produce enough food to feed its people.

“There is no reason why one African should go to bed without food. God blessed us with natural resource endowments to be able to produce food for all our people [and] also to supply excess food to the communities outside our continent,” he said.

To effectively address the impact of climate change and other shocks, we wish to encourage member States to consider signing and ratifying the Africa risk capacity treaty which will open up assistance channels in planning, preparing and responding to these shocks in a timely and cost-effective manner.

He emphasised that in order to counter the growing global problem of food insecurity, that is being worsened by rising costs of food, energy and agricultural inputs, there is need to raise the levels of productivity in agriculture, value addition through agro-processing, among others.

“Further, to expedite the economic transformation of our continent, African countries need to enhance intra-continental trade and take full advantage of opportunities presented by the Africa continental free trade area, which offers a 1.3 billion market size for products from within the continent,” President Hichilema said.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema said there can be no meaningful economic development in Africa or elsewhere, in the absence of peace and security.

“We must work together to silence the guns and all hotbeds of violence on our continent,” said President Hichilema.

Jennifer Lopez wears wedding dress from ‘old movie’ to marry Ben Affleck

0

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have tied the nuptial knots in a Las Vegas drive-through chapel.

The couple announced their matrimony in a newsletter from Lopez revealing that they flew to the desert city in Nevada to gain a marriage license and wed at a chapel on Sunday July 17.

“We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” wrote Lopez in a message signed Jennifer Lynn Affleck.

She also revealed that she said “I do” wearing “a dress from an old movie.”

A marriage license was obtained in their name from Clark County dated Saturday, July 16, according to document details posted online by the county clerk’s office.

Lopez posted a photo on social media depicting her in a bed while sporting a silver wedding ring.

Lopez, 52, actually appeared to have two different looks for her nuptials, one of which was a white lace off-the-shoulder gown with long sleeves, a sweetheart neckline, corset bodice and fishtail train along with a matching lace-trimmed veil from Zuhair Murad’s bridal collection.

Photos included in her newsletter also show the superstar modeling a white sleeveless boatneck gown with a quilted texture, presumably the vintage find.

Affleck wore a white tux from his own closet, as the couple exchanged “the rings we’ll wear for the rest of our lives” at the Little White Wedding Chapel, according to Lopez.

Affleck and Lopez, a glamorous duo widely known as “Bennifer,” got engaged in April of this year.

The celebrity power couple’s wedding in Nevada was the culmination of a relationship that has stretched over two decades in two separate romances and headlined countless tabloid covers.

The ceremony conducted in classic Vegas fashion comes three months after the couple confirmed their engagement and 18 years after they cancelled their wedding.

WE’RE READY FOR THE BY-ELECTION IN KWACHA, DECLARES BONANZA

….as he donates k70, 000 cash to St. Peter Catholic Parish in Ipusukilo Compound

KITWE, Sunday, July 17, 2022 (SMART EAGLES)

KWACHA Member of Parliament Hon Joseph Malanji has declared that the people of Kwacha Constituency are ready to defend their seat in the event of a by-election.

Hon Malanji said the people of Kwacha had given him a huge responsibility through the ballot to foster development in the area and he will ensure that that is accomplished.

He recounts that from the time he was voted into office in 2016, he has scored a number of successes as per his promises and the development is there for all to see.

The Kwacha constituency lawmaker was speaking when he attended mass at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church Ipusukilo Parish in Kitwe today.

And Hon Malanji said when he promised that good roads were going to be constructed in the area, some people did not believe him till when they saw for themselves the roads being done.

“Brethren, when I said that a good road was going to pass by this church under my tenure, others doubted me. Don’t we have a tarmac passing here now?” Hon Malanji wondered.

He said a new maternity ward at Ipusukilo Ward Clinic is still under construction and will soon be opened to the public.

“We have built the maternity ward and if it was not for the political confusion, I would have opened it a long time,” Hon Malanji added. “We have also facilitated for the construction of filling stations which has made it easier and faster for our bus and taxi drivers to access fuel in Kwacha.”

And Hon Malanji has cautioned Kwacha residents against following people blindly because it makes them grow big-headed.

He said it is shocking that someone could come from nowhere to line up for empowerment funds and later start lying to the people that he would empower you.

“Brethren, this is not the time to follow anyone anyhow. Kapata mukaya, mweni akaya ukashala uchimoma (The one who neglected an old friend for a visitor remained regretting after the visitor had left),” Hon Malanji said much to the delight of the congregants.

Meanwhile, Hon Malanji did not disappoint in living up to his Bonanza nickname which was bestowed upon him owing to his generosity.

After learning that the Ipusukilo Parish was facing the challenge of inadequate chairs, Hon Malanji did not hesitate to stretch his helping hand to the house of God stating that he is doing so in fulfilment of being the servant of the people who voted for him

“I have been informed by the parish chairman that you have a challenge of chairs and the last fundraising event you held only raised enough for six chairs. I am giving out K50, 000 for the chairs and another K20, 000 for the church choir,” Hon Malanji announced.

He has also advised the church to coordinate properly and engage the area councillor for any other needs further assuring that he will always be available for them like he has always done.

Hon Malanji said he can never neglect the Kwacha people because they lined up in the sun to vote for him because they knew he was a hard worker and would work for them.

“I will not stop here. I will ensure that I deliver the services for the people of Kwacha as promised,” Hon Malanji assured. “I told you here in Kwacha that our motto is ‘Community Pioneered Development’ so when we put things and minds together, nothing is impossible.”

He has since assured the church that he would liase with the parish chairman to find out the progress on the construction of the church hall and see what would be needed to ensure that the construction remains is on course.

Also in attendance of the parish mass was Kitwe City Mayor Mpasa Mwaya and a number of local councillors.

Man cries that wife bewitched his machine gun

LOVE making is believed to be a cure for the cold in the winter by many and also a way to fill the earth. However, a man of Lusaka lost the ability pull the trigger of his rifle after a passionate encounter with his wife as it’s favourite posture was that of an avocado hanging from a tree despite of any enticement.

Robby Phiri, 48, of of Kabangwe area in the outskirts of Lusaka narrated before the Lusaka Boma local court that his machine gun had an erectile disfunction and could not hit the bulls eye after a heated intimate encounter with his wife who came back from a three day outing with tattoos (Ndembo) around her waist.

This is in a case where Phiri’s wife Evelyn Ngaligane, 46, filed for divorce and wanted their 30-year-old marriage to be permanently deleted.

Phiri told the court that his union with Ngaligane had no issues until she changed her religion from Islam to Christianity and started attending one of these ‘go deeper papa’s churches.

He revealed that his wife traveled to Mumbwa on pretext of attending a friend’s funeral but to his shock Ngaligane came with marks around her waist.

“When I asked her why she did that, she answered me that it was her body [and that] she can do [to it] as she pleased,” Phiri said.

Phiri begged to to have his wife stay as he is currently sick and needed the care of his wife.

However, Ngaligane was hell bent on removing Phiri’s surname as she dismissed her husband’s plea stating he was a very violent man who beat her brutally.

She disclosed that as if coming from a lineage of Catherine and Esther, Phiri beat her blue black till her leg gained volume.

“As you see me right now my entire leg is swollen because he beat me up last week Wednesday. If it was not for the neighbors to stop him, he would have killed me,” Ngaligane disclosed.

She said a sick man could not beat his wife the way he did.

Ngaligane added that the reason she got tattoos was to preserve the lives of her children as she had given birth to three still borns despite her having five children for Phiri.

Upon hearing the sides of the couple Senior Local Court Magistrate George Kaoma adjourned the matter to Tuesday 19th of July 2022 for the couple to reflect on their decision.

Edgar’s ‘resist giving up power’ disclosure

Edgar’s ‘resist giving up power’ disclosure

Former president Edgar Lungu on Tuesday told a cheering crowd of PF members at his residence in Ibex, Lusaka, that many people including former PF media director Antonio Mwanza told him to resist conceding defeat following the 2021 elections.

“Antonio, when you blamed me for giving up power, a lot of you were saying, ‘you should resist’. But I can assure you it was the right thing to do so that you can see and compare… We are standing head and shoulder above them now,” Lungu said, in reference to President Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND government, as he looked out in the crowd for Mwanza. So, they want me out of it completely, but you can kill the body but you can’t kill the soul. You can’t kill the ideas. So, there are people who believe in what we believed in as PF and we still believe in…People have been able to compare oranges and they can tell which ones are wholesome and which ones are rotten.”

Resisting what? Blamed for giving up power?
Emily Dickinson said, “I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word. Sometimes I write one, and I look at it, until it begins to shine.”

So, Edgar has finally disclosed what was going on at State House in the final hours of his presidency.
Now he is exposing his inner circle’s ill-intentions.

Mikhail Bulgakov once warned that, “You should never ask anyone for anything. Never – and especially from those who are more powerful than yourself.”

But what is motivating this disclosure? Was it voluntary or it’s a thought that just escaped his lips because he was emotionally charged on Tuesday – as the Drug Enforcement Commission seems to be getting closer to his bedroom? What’s the truth, Edgar? Did you democratically – on your own free will – accept defeat? Did you resist until some African leaders engaged in shuttle diplomacy to make you see sense; to accept your rejection by the masses – the electorates? Why was Antonio and others telling you to resist the poll outcome? What was the basis, in whose interests? Was it for Edgar to keep power unilaterally? Was State power absolutely for Edgar and his PF minions like Antonio to keep regardless the outcome of the election? How did Edgar ascend to the Republican presidency? Was it a usurpation of power or through democratic means – the vote?

Edgar and his PF were ushered into office through a democratic election in 2015 and 2016. And they were removed in the same way. Citizens rejected Edgar and his Alebwelelapo team by giving Hakainde and the UPND a huge mandate. Edgar had no choice but to abide by the Constitution. And he’s intelligent enough to know that he had reached the dead end in his presidency. It was over. That’s why and how he exited State House. He received unequivocal marching orders from citizens.

So, for Antonio and colleagues who were trying to poison his mind to resist, to resist the people’s vote? How? What does our Constitution say about this? Were those lawful requests or suggestions? What Antonio was asking Edgar to do is no small matter!

Love him or loathe him……..HH is a strategist, a genius!

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

Love him or loathe him, this villager from Bweengwa who grew up herding cattle, one Hakainde Hichilema, the current President of the Republic of Zambia, is a strategist……..nay a genius!

Following the demise of Anderson Kambela Mazoka, the founding leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND) in 2006, a scintillating battle for the top slot would ensue albeit threatening to tear down the party. A hitherto little-known name in political circles but then a very successful businessman and cattle rancher would step out of the shadows to square it off with the acting party president Sakwiba Sikota alongside another prominent entrepreneur James Ndambo. Readers would still remember Ndambo for capturing the imagination of the public with his record-breaking philanthropy exploits in the nation, recently.

Speaking in an interview with Amos Malupenga, Managing Editor of the then influential The Post Newspaper prior to the intra-party elections, Hakainde declared, “The request came from all over – the party members and people from all walks of life, the business community and my fellow village people. By the way, I do a lot of community work. Over the last fifteen years, we have done schools, clinics, deep tanks and we assist a lot in the areas where we have farms. I pay school fees for children numbering fifty who are not mine.”

HH would subsequently fend off competition and claim sweet victory. However, this would not sit well with some senior party stalwarts and would result in the exodus of the likes of Bob Sichinga, Patrick Chisanga, Henry Mtonga and of course, the vanquished Sakwiba Sikota. That same year, HH would go on to challenge the ruling party-sponsored candidate Levy Mwanawasa and end up eating humble pie.

Just when many political pundits started preparing obituaries for UPND and HH; in a matter of time, he would demonstrate that he was a tough nut to crack! For the next 15 years, he would thus commence navigating the rough terrain of Zambian politics by dodging bullets and teargas, stomaching smear campaigns and slander, escaping from violent cadres though rickety roofs, and constantly enduring detentions, of course the harshest being solitary confinement for a prolonged period of time at the notorious Mukobeko Maximum Prison for the laughable charge of treason over a traffic offense! Under ordinary circumstances, many would have easily crumbled like a cookie and thrown in the towel, and yet HH remained resolute, even when he had to dig deep into his pockets and bankroll the party he loves, almost single-handedly.

How many politicians would have had the stamina to withstand the torture, calumny and bearing the financial responsibility of keeping a party intact for so many donkey years?

In the past, we have witnessed a plethora of individuals – the rich, decorated army generals, top class lawyers, fiery clergymen, successful farmers and even intellectuals attempting to form their own political parties. We shall cite a few examples:

Some of the country’s affluent individuals such as Enock Kavindele, Ben Mwila and Humphrey Mulemba once flirted with the idea of running their own parties. After failing to wrestle UNIP from the grips of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority in 1991, Kavindele left in frustration to form his own United Democratic Party. It would put up a lackluster performance in the elections that followed, only managing to scoop a few council seats, particularly in North western province where he hails from. Before long, he would abandon his own party to join the promising MMD where ended up being rewarded with a senior portfolio as vice presidency.

And as the cracks began to appear in MMD barely after 2 years in office due to allegations of corruption, a group of MPs led by Humphrey Mulemba would resign from the party in protest and form the National Party. The new party would retain the 5 of the by-elections forced by their resignations from the MMD. Unfortunately, National Party would suffer a natural death after the death of Mulemba in 1998.

Meanwhile, as the drama continued to unravel in MMD, in the early 2000s, Ben Mwila who was said to be President Chiluba’s uncle would ditch the party after his colleagues criticized him for considering a presidential run. He would form the Zambia Republican Party and go on to put up one of the most expensive campaigns, trudging every corner of the nation, holding rallies and distributing party regalia.

After his resignation from MMD in 1993, respected lawyer, Dr. Roger Chongwe would come up with the Liberal Progress Front. Alas, this was a stillborn baby that would never see the light of the day! The same applies to Sakwiba Sikota’s pet project, the United Liberal Party which was only best known for churning out articles in The Post newspaper and hosting press briefings at the plush hotels in Lusaka. As for the Dr. Ludwig Sondashi-led Forum for Democratic Alternative which he formed in 2014, there’s nothing much to write home about. He would best be remembered for promising to roll-out his Sondashi 2000 formula for free once elected as president as if every potential voter was HIV positive!

Never to be left out, intellectual giants such as Bo Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika would equally craft his own Agenda for Zambia along with his beloved sister Princess Inonge Mbikusita Lewanika. The party would end up claiming 2 parliamentary seats in Western Province in the 1996 elections. Another intellectual, Dr. Gwendoline Konie would follow suit in 2000 and quickly relocate back home from abroad to come and contest the elections under the banner of her brainchild, the Social Democratic Party.

Seemingly taking advantage of the respect that citizens have for farmers for the nshima they supply to our homes, commercial farmers Ben Kapita and Guy Scot saw an opportunity to try the Lima Party in 1996. However, it failed to attract the much anticipated support from the public.

Some of the country’s admired army generals such as Christon Tembo and Godfrey Miyanda equally tried their luck raiding our political landscape with their own political parties – Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) and Heritage Party, respectively.

Perhaps taking advantage of Zambia as a Christian nation, in 1998, popular Televangelist Pastor Nevers Mumba would give birth to the National Citizens Coalition (NCC). If he thought the gullible public would immediately greet him with ‘ichimwela,’ he was a very disappointed individual. NCC even failed to produce a single MP!

Where are all these political parties today? They are either dead or only exist on paper.

Ministerial Statement On The World Bank’s Re-classification Of Zambia As A Low-income Country

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT ON THE WORLD BANK’S RE-CLASSIFICATION OF ZAMBIA AS A LOW-INCOME COUNTRY

Madam Speaker,

1. Let me begin by thanking you for according me this opportunity to brief this August House on the re-classification of Zambia as a low-income country from lower middle-income status by the World Bank.

In my address, I will begin by stating succinctly, how the World Bank classifies countries. Consequent sections of my address will be on the implications of the classifications, and then more importantly what we must do as a country to improve our standing among the nations.

2. The World Bank assigns the world’s economies to four income groups, namely low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high income. This is something that occurs even in our country, where we have high class (commonly referred to as apamwabas), those in between and commonly referred to as the middle class, as well as those without significant means.

3. The World Bank undertakes these classifications every year, and update the classification on 1st July, based on the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita or per person, of the previous year.

By focusing on each citizen of a country, the method used by the World Bank provides information about the income levels of people in a country, and therefore, enables comparison among nations. I will not delve too much into the complexities of the calculation.

4. For the 2022 classification, which are based on performance in 2021, the World Bank used the following thresholds to classify countries:

a)Low income: Less than US $1,085 GNI per capita;

b)Lower Middle Income: Between US $1,086 and US $4,255 GNI per capita;

c)Upper Middle-Income: Between US $4,256 and US $13,205; and,

d)High Income: Above US $13,205 GNI per capita.

5. Zambia had a GNI per capita income of US $1,040 in 2021, from US $1,190 in 2020. Despite positive growth in 2021, the economic challenges of the past years and the continued sharp depreciation of the Kwacha against the US dollar meant that we were less well-off.

6. Madam Speaker, Zambia was among the three countries in the world that was reclassified to a lower income group. (The others being Lebanon, from upper middle income to lower middle-income and Palau, from high income to upper middle income).

7. The re-classification of the country has occurred ten years after the country was upgraded to lower middle-income status in 2011, based on performance in 2010. This gives us an opportunity, therefore, to reflect on what could have gone wrong in the economic governance of this country.

Why we here, and what are the causes for this?

8. Prior to attaining lower middle-income status in 2011, real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth averaged 8.7 percent. The exchange rate moved but not substantially, from an average of K3.60 per United States dollar in 2006 to K4.8 per United States dollar in 2010.

Further, the inflation rate was in single digit band in four (4) out of the five year period, except at end December 2008 when it was recorded at 16.6 percent.

9. The problematic period is between 2017 and 2021, during which real GDP growth averaged 2.0 percent.

The average exchange rate of the Kwacha to the United States dollar was K9.55 in 2017, and rose to K19.91 in 2021.

The inflation rate rose from 6.58 percent in December 2017 to 16.4 percent in December 2021.

10. Madam Speaker, I will not delve into what happened to other economic metrics over this period such as debt ratios, the fiscal deficit and so on, as though important are somewhat peripheral to the discussion at hand.

The bottom line is that we have observed a deterioration in economic governance.

What are the lessons, and implication of the re-classification?

11. We learn important lessons from the re-classification. Macroeconomic stability, including growing the economy should be upmost in our minds. We are in a global village, and our standing among the nations is determined by the actions that we take.

12. A second lesson is that we must focus on the bigger picture of growing our economy, and improving the livelihood of Zambians through a stable macroeconomic environment.

Again, the world is watching.

13. Arising from the re-classification, there is no immediate implication on the lending category by the World Bank for the financial year 2023 which begins on 1st July, 2022.

For the purpose of lending, a country has to be above or below operational cut off point US$1255 for 3 consecutive years for the World Bank to change the lending category.

14. Given that Zambia’s GNI per capita is now US$1,040 which is below the operational cut off point for a second year in a row, Zambia is considered a blend country, meaning it can access both concessional and non-concessional financing.

15. Should Zambia’s GNI per capita for 2022 remain below the operational cut off point again, then Zambia will move from blend to International Development Association (IDA) terms, which are very concessional for the fiscal year 2024 that begins in July 2023.

In essence, if our income remains below operational cut off point for 3 consecutive years, this is a confirmation that a country’s credit worthiness has been eroded.

16. Accessing financing from the concessional window will imply cheaper interest rates for the country as the terms will be lower.

Further the classification may induce those lenders that provide grants and financing to low-income countries relook at their policies on the country and resume grant financing.

This may be more helpful for Zambia given the high indebtedness the country is undergoing and the policy to stop commercial borrowing.

17. On the negative side, the level of resources we can access for development will now be less as we cannot borrow non-concessional even if our debt crisis is resolved.

18. Another implication is that we must do more to attain the Vision 2030 as this action shows that we have gravitated away from the progress we ought to have achieved.

In the Vision, the desire of the Zambian people is poverty and inequality reduction, and improvements in their livelihoods. This is a non-partisan issue which we must all aspire towards.

What must we do?

19. The new Dawn administration started the economic transformation of the country upon assuming office in August 2021. The focus has been to stabilize the economy.

Thus far, the Government has managed to bring down the inflation rate, stabilize the exchange rate, and controlled domestic borrowing resulting in lower cost of funds.

We have also introduced free education, decentralized resources through the CDF and scaled up social sector spending.

Recruitment of teachers is done (30, 496) and that of health personnel is close to fruition – successful applicants will be announced in the next few days.

20. Over the medium to long term, Government has drawn up the Eighth (8th) National Development Plan (8NDP), which we will implement to the hilt, so that we enhance and foster higher growth by focusing on the main sectors of agriculture, agro-processing, mining, manufacturing and tourism.

Further, we have embarked on a multi-pronged approach to improve the financial and economic governance of the country, which includes the following:

a) Return to debt sustainability through debt restructuring;

b) Gradually and sustainably improve public finances through revenue enhancement and expenditure rationalization;

c) Enhancing commitment controls to reduce wasteful expenditure; and,

d) The Fight against corruption.

21. In the continued spirit of upscaling transparency, we have published the policies and measures that Government will undertake over the medium term in the 2023-2025 Medium Term Budget Plan (MTBP) or Green Paper. I ENCOURAGE HONOURABLE MEMBERS OF THIS HOUSE AND THEIR CONSTITUENTS TO STUDY THE DOCUMENT AND PROVIDE US WITH FEEDBACK.

22. I am confident that in 2023, we will have a better assessment by the World Bank and get back on the right track towards meeting the loud and clear aspirations of the Zambian people as contained in the Vision 2030.

(Delivered to Parliament by Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, Minister of Finance and National Planning).

No One Has Powers To Decide On Who Should Be Paramount Chief Of Tonga People – Chief Moonze

NO ONE HAS POWERS TO DECIDE ON WHO SHOULD BE PARAMOUNT CHIEF OF TONGA PEOPLE – CHIEF MOONZE

Senior Chief Moonze of Tonga Speaking people in Monze district has charged that the Southern Province Royal Establishment Committee has no authority to decide on who should be Paramount Chief in Southern Province.

During the official opening of the Lwiindi Gonde traditional ceremony in Monze on Monday, Organizing Committee Chairperson, Patrick Sikawala requested government to gazette Chief Moonze as paramount chief of the Tonga land.

Later in separate interviews, Provincial Royal Committee Chairperson Chief Nalumba and Secretary Chief Hamaundu said the Council of Chiefs in the region have not had time to enough time discuss issues of who amongst themselves should be installed as paramount chief.

According to Phoenix Chief Nalubamba says there are a lot of issues that should be agreed up on by the traditional leaders in the region before choosing a paramount leader of the land.

Chief Hamaundu told Chikuni Radio News that this matter is difficult to talk about because there are issues of blood, clan, lineage, and systems to be considered first.

But in an Interview with Chikuni Radio today, Chief Moonze describes the Provincial Royal Establishment Committee as any other committee which has no powers to talk about such matters of who should the Paramount leader of the land.

Chief Moonze explains that according to the documents from the Council office in Monze on judgment passed in 1929 and 1931 Moonze Chiefdom should be given Paramount Position in Southern Province.

He states that Zambia as whole only has four recognized Paramount chiefs and Chief Moonze is among them.
The Traditional Leader states that personally he may not be suitable for the position of Paramount Chief but that the position is for Moonze Chiefdom.

Chief Moonze advises those arguing to this to consult the relevant authorities and not to bring politics in the traditional rule.
He says ‘it is a taboo for young ones to speak on matters they do not understand, they must seek counsel before people conclude that they are mad.’’

Swearing in Mulambo Haimbe

By Mthoniswa Banda[i]

Dear Mr President,

When I saw you surrounded in pomp and splendour during the swearing-in of Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe as State Counsel, by over 30 suited civil servants and State House officials, amidst back ground cries of the peacocks and peahens, I wondered what time these top officials actually do their work.

You see Mr President, this scene is similar to the various scenes I see whenever you, Mr President, is travelling out of town from our airports. I see you being seen off by bosses of the Army, Air Force, national service and police force among other notables. And not to forget the thousands of police men and women that would have route-lined the road from where your journey started to the airport. This scene repeats itself in every town where your plane will be touching down.

Mr President, as a former chair and former member of various boards and a businessman and investor of repute, such scenes of workers leaving their posts to go and say bye to their CEO at the airport or join him in the contract signing of new employees must have been a boardroom query. The board would definitely have enquired if this was value for money for a CEO to carry his entire staff to the airport for the sole purpose of them saying bye to him and or shaking his hand so he looks like a boss. Such a boss would definitely be reprimanded by the board!

Mr President, as CEO and chief marketing officer of Zambia you are doing the same. You are allowing the entire Zambia defence force and police, the entire Cabinet office and entire State House to line up for you at these ceremonial events and airport take-offs and landings, at the expense of them working. In fact, it seems only these work only when they are surrounding you in your duties and seem not to have any work of their own. When then does the acting man at Cabinet Office work to ensure that the civil service that was severely abused in the last 10 years does what it ought to do or sign approval documents that drive the engine of the civil service? When does the head of the police force find time to appoint his provincial commissioners and undertake meaningful legal and policy reforms that will make Zambia Police operate efficiently and effectively in maintaining law and order if all the time his daily schedule comprises route lining for your motorcade and shaking hands with you at the airport?

According to numerous Zambia annual budget reports, over 60 per cent of Zambia’s budgets go into the payment of salaries and allowances of running the civil service, including running your office; leaving a paltry budget for moving Zambia forward through education, health, manufacturing, research and development.

Mr President, looking at the number of civil servants that hang around your ceremonies and airport departure lounges, I am compelled to think that most of these workers do not have any work to do (job description) except “to serve at the pleasure and leisure of the President” and therefore are being a drain to the treasury and country.

Mr President, you were elected not as a politician but because you were an acclaimed investor who poured millions of your money into this country, a successful businessman who managed to start businesses that now employ Zambians and finally as a manager who manages profitably all the businesses that you have been associated with. The voters and indeed Zambians at large expect you to manage Zambia as its CEO in the same thrifty and prudent manner you managed your businesses and the companies of other investors on whose boards you served.

Zambians do not want you to be a politician, boss or chief like some of the many former presidents that we have had. They have seen the damage that politics and politicians have done to Zambia’s prospects of being a developed country. Zambians want Zambia to return to the global stage of being like Singapore and other Asian Tigers that started like Zambia but now are regarded as successful countries. Zambians want a manager to manage their resources well and a manager to ensure all sectors of the economy are allocated their necessary support so they meet their key performance indicators (KPIs).

Mr President, let your civil servants work. Cut the un necessary drama at airports and at State House events. Allow your people to work and be found in their offices. Let those employed to think and find solutions to Zambia’s problems be seen to be doing just that. Let those that are employed to manage our resources be in the offices and fields doing just that. Just like we follow your speeches and orders on TV and social media, let those two-second instructions that you issue during airport handshake ceremonies be issued via the same technology, and if they contain secrete message utilise emails and WhatsApp! As our CEO, allow for effective and prudent utilisation of Zambia’s time and resources under your care and watch.

Zambians do not want Zambia to continue being a country that continues to pay government workers for keeping up appearances and for them to be seen around the President without them doing any tangible work in their job descriptions.

Wish you well in your work.

*HH HAS CREATED MORE OPPORTUNITIES THAN THE 30,000 PLUS TEACHERS SO FAR*
====================
Authored By :*Mupishi Jones*

Let’s face it, as of today President Hakainde Hichilema has created more opportunities for Zambian youths than the 30,000 plus Teachers that we are reading and witnessing today. At least no one is arguing about this achievement!
The following are some of the opportunities that President Hakainde Hichilema has so far created;

1. *TEACHER RECRUITMENT*
This is the story of the 30,000 plus Teachers that everyone today is familiar with.It is indeed unprecedented…. congratulations to the New Dawn Team.

2. *PRIMARY SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN*
Look around our primary schools in our nearby areas, the classrooms are all packed with new entrants than ever before due to President Hakainde Hichilema’s clarion call to all the children in the country to get back to school under government sponsorship. We are talking of hundreds of thousands of school going children getting life-changing opportunities of accessing education! To our usual bitter critics, this gesture may appear inconsequential, but to visionary and forward thinkers, this act has a far reaching positive impact on our country. If you want to have a future glimpse on how Zambia will be in twenty years time, wait until all these thousands of children graduate after ten or fifteen years from today! In short, what the majority of our seven or ten years children are doing today will determine how our country will be twenty years from today.Thats how President Hakainde Hichilema is diffusing the once popular “time-bomb” of our country by raising a critical mass of informed youths through education….once again, thank you Mr President.

3. *SECONDARY SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN*
As we are busy politicking today, thousands of boarding secondary school going children are back in class after accessing bursary sponsorship under the Secondary school bursaries component of the CDF!

4. *YOUTH SKILLS DEVELOPMENT* President Hakainde Hichilema has removed tens of thousands of youths countrywide from the streets and sent them to various TEVETA affiliated colleges for various life saving skills development training courses under CDF Skills Development component.Millions of kwachas are already paid from various Local Authorities CDF accounts into TEVETA affiliated colleges countrywide. It is all smiles for Principals of Trades Training centers,Colleges and Universities to have such a shot in their arms. Once again these are real faces of our youths and not just statistical figures from the grapevine!

All these quantum leaps are being fulfilled just within the 10 months of President Hakainde Hichilema being in office… It’s a pity that it’s a government that doesn’t want to beat it’s own chest but trust me,Zambia is truly back in the champions league and destined for greatness in a few years time under the tutelage of one Bally.

As I conclude, let me repeat, President Hakainde Hichilema has opened up hundreds of thousands of opportunities for the Zambian youths from primary school going children to college training youths and not only the 30,000 plus Teachers recruited. In a few weeks time, health workers will be recruited, another component of the CDF under grants will be rolled out to thousands of beneficiaries countrywide…. the opposition political parties must surely re-think of another approach to politics because their current approach of critising everything will boomerang on them
*I submit*

Xiaomi’s First Electric Car Prototype Set to Be Unveiled in August, Launch Could Be In 2024

0

Xiaomi is rumoured to be working on an electric vehicle. The Chinese smartphone maker announced its $10 billion investment in an electric car division last year. It was previously rumoured that the first electric car from Xiaomi will launch in 2024. The company did not confirm any launch timeline at the time of the confirmation last year. Meanwhile, a new report claims that Xiaomi will showcase its first electric car later this year.

A Sina Tech report claimed that the Xiaomi electric car will be showcased in the form of a prototype later this year. Let’s take a look at all the details about the Xiaomi electric car known so far.

Xiaomi Electric Car Prototype Coming Soon
Xiaomi will unveil its first electric car prototype in August 2022, according to a new report. The company will soon begin testing the electric car in China. According to the Sina Tech report, Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun will unveil the prototype during a public event in China in August.

Jun is reportedly spending two-thirds of his time at the Xiaomi Auto headquarters to ensure that the project progresses as planned.

After showcasing the prototype, Xiaomi will begin the road testing of its first electric car in winter. The report added that Xiaomi’s EV team includes former employees of HVST Automobile Design, who are responsible for the Maven concept car from WM Motor.

Even though the prototype will be showcased in August, Xiaomi is far off from launching the vehicle commercially. The report stated that the EV is expected to hit the road in 2024. Xiaomi is setting up its auto manufacturing plant in Yizhuang, where the company will also have its research and development (R&D) centre. This factory aims at producing over 3,00,000 electric cars at full capacity every year.

Initially, the company aims to manufacture 1,50,000 EVs in 2024. An ArenaEV report stated that Xiaomi plans to launch four different models spanning across A+ and B segments. The A+ segment model will aim at a sale price between RMB 150,000 and 200,000 (Rs 17.7 lakh to Rs 23.6 lakh) and it will support L2 autonomous driving. The B segment cars, on the other hand, will cost between RMB 200,000 and 300,000 (Rs 23.6 lakh and Rs 35.4 lakh) and will support L3 autonomous driving technology.

“I Had 15 Abort!ons For A Man Of God Just Because He Didn’t Want A Pregnant Bride” – Lady Reveals
Apparently, a woman had 15 abortions for a man who would not wed her because he would not carry a pregnant woman to the altar.

The woman, a former businesswoman who is now a novelist, talked to Chude Jideonwo about her experience.

She said that the man she met at church, who was pursuing a career as a pastor, was the subject of her courtship.

The woman revealed that her partner had set a date for their wedding. She claimed to have given birth to a son previously out of wedlock.

“Fifteen abort!ons. My mum called me when she heard it years ago and said it’s not possible. She insisted I was just saying it so people will come. I told her it was true. If you read my book, you’d understand why I did it,”she said.

“It was just because I was naive and had the goal to get married, at which time every other thing didn’t matter. So even if I got pregnant three times for a guy and keeps saying he doesn’t want to use protection, I’d still do it.

“There’s a chapter in the book where I said I married to prove daddy wrong. I launched ‘operation get married’. That’s how the abort!ons happened. After 15 abort!ons, I still conceived and had my son.

“It’s only now that I ask myself how I did that. For each abort!on, I had said it would be the last one. And because I had a child before, I didn’t think of the consequences. I didn’t want to have another child outside wedlock.”

The woman said she initially refused to abort her 15th baby but her partner insisted he couldn’t have a pregnant bride.

She said she also couldn’t have another child out of wedlock.

“They would just kill me. So there’s the thing that led me to it and there’s the shame. I was going to marry the guy. We met in church. We were together and fixed a wedding date. I had done 14. Remorse started setting in,”she said.

“I thought, what if I don’t have another child? I was in the choir and he was preparing to be a pastor. He said he’s never going to have a pregnant bride because of what people will say. He insisted I abort.

“I said, what if I don’t have another child? He said to leave that for him to worry about since I already have one. Anything to get me to take the baby out. The woman brought the foetus out and showed me. That killed me.

“The father didn’t come. I was depressed. Seven days after, the guy said he was done with the relationship. I didn’t hold him responsible but blamed the devil. I felt the devil was controlling him to rob me of my marital destiny.

“I lived in denial and went to his house daily for three months. I fasted for 40 days to get the man back. I tried to kill myself. I was a mess.”

According to the woman, it took the help of another pastor to dissolve the relationship after which she slipped into depression.

Conferring Friends With National Awards Is Abuse Of Presidential Privileges- Hon Given Lubinda

CONFERRING FRIENDS WITH NATIONAL AWARDS IS ABUSE OF PRESIDENTIAL PRIVILEGES

Saturday , 16th July, 2022

On 14th July, 2022, President Hakainde Hichilema conferred The Order of the Eagle of Zambia 1st Div to three former Presidents namely Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson of Liberia and Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone.

The Order of the Eagle of Zambia 1st Div is presented to individuals who have made meritorious contributions to the growth and national interests of our nation.

The question that begs an answer is, what exactly have Obasanjo, Sirleaf-Johnson and Koroma done for Zambia that merits them the right to be awarded such solemn honour and awards? They have been honoured and awarded purely for being board members of the Brenthurst Foundation to which President Hichilema is a member too.

The Brenthurst Foundation is a Johannesburg-based organisation established by the Oppenheimer family, the founders of Ango-American Plc which has very strong links with the UPND since that Party’s inception in 1998.

President Hichilema is abusing state authority to appease his friends and colleagues at the Brenthurst Foundation who have taken control of his Government’s economic policy direction with intent to milk and enrich themselves off our state resources especially our minerals and wildlife.

This explains why Obasanjo overshadowed everyone including Heads of State at the inauguration ceremony of President Hichilema. It further explains why Obasanjo has been a regular visitor and permanent feature of the UPND Government; this is to do the bidding on behalf of the Brenthurst Foundation.

Apart from being an elections observer (for which he was paid handsomely), what contributions has Bai Koroma made to Zambia? It is now absolutely clear that the only reason Bai Koroma engineered his election observer status in Zambia’s last general elections was to advance the interests of Brenthurst Foundation and the personal interests of his board member, Hakainde Hichilema.

This should actually serve as a wake-up call to the Electoral Commission of Zambia that they should endeavour to do due diligence before accrediting people as elections observers or elections monitors because characters like Bai Koroma should not have been allowed anywhere near our electoral processes in last year’s elections.

Again, apart from being a fellow board member of the Brenthurst Foundation with Mr. Hichilema, what contributions has Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson made to Zambia for her to deserve such national honour and award?

This is an act of a President who is abusing state authority and state institutions to reward personal companions and as Patriotic Front we wish to condemn in the strongest terms the wanton abuse of state power by President Hakainde Hichilema for awarding unmerited individuals such high national awards. The conduct of the President must be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.

HH, Nevers Mumba, Enablers Of Western Imperliaism- Fred M’membe

HH, NEVERS MUMBA, ENABLERS OF WESTERN IMPERLIAISM

WHO WILL DEFINE OUR AFRICAN HEROES?

I have read MMD leader Mr Nevers Mumba’s defence for the Oppenheimers and their agents in the Brenthurst Foundation, including the three who were honoured by the President of Zambia. I will not dignify Mr Mumba’s defence for the Oppenheimers – whom he proudly identifies himself with as his close allies – with a response.

Suffice to say that it is impossible for imperialism to succeed anywhere in Africa without local collaborators, agents, puppets, muppets or lackeys. It has been like that since European colonialism started the conquest of Africa.

The forces that are after our mineral wealth always recruit from among ourselves those who are available for hire to become its voices, to defend and promote its interests.

We urge our people to always strive to unearth the real class interests any idea or social, economic, and political policy or practice serves. When someone speaks, the first question to ask is: whose class interests is this person serving, protecting or advancing? Is it the poor Zambians’ interests?

Or is it the Oppenheimers’ imperial and profit interests? Or is it the interests of mining lobbies? If they are defending the interests of the Brenthurst Foundation, an Anglo American mining lobby that seeks a low tax regime in our homeland and elsewhere in Africa to maximise their profits and our exploitation, what is in it for them?

We maintain that the disgraceful honours that were undeservedly given to members of the Brenthurst Foundation – the organisation created by the Oppenheimers and led by Mr Greg Mills that supported the campaign of the President when in opposition – shall be withdrawn once we assume office. We note that nearly everyone associated with the Brenthurst Foundation – including Mr Greg Mills, the Oppenheimers, former president of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe and other members of the advisory board of the Brenthurst Foundation, and indeed Mr Nevers Mumba himself – turned up at State House on the day of the investiture ceremony to celebrate the honouring of three of their own. What were all these people doing at State House if the hastily arranged investiture ceremony had nothing do with the Brenthurst Foundation? How did they find themselves there? Who invited them to State House, and in what capacity?

It is patently clear that the President of Zambia and his right-wing sponsors are trying to use these disgraceful awards to impose agents of the Brenthurst Foundation – led by Mr Obasanjo, Mr Koroma and Mrs Johnson – on Zambia as our national and African heroes. No, those people have done nothing for Zambians, and this explains why even the person who was awarding them could not cite a single example of anything they have done for Zambia. Yes, they are heroes of the President and his sponsors in the Brenthurst Foundation, but they are not and will never be our people’s heroes. Zambians know who their real heroes are and Mr Obasanjo, Mr Koroma and Mrs Johnson are not among them.

Besides laundering the Brenthurst Foundation as an ally of Zambia and Africa, we know that the other motivation behind those awards was to counter the recent publicity of an extremely progressive message given by Thabo Mbeki during the Kenneth Kaunda Memorial Lecture at Mulungushi International Conference Centre last month. Mbeki’s lecture highlighted the huge gap between the pan-Africanist leadership provided by Kaunda and the current Zambian leadership, which is increasingly facing isolation from several African leaders who see it as a puppet of Western imperialist countries that is out to serve the interests of racist white capital and its Western backers.

Mbeki also showed that even in instances where Kaunda reached out to outside powers such as China for support, he never surrendered Zambia’s sovereignty to such powers or Western institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank. For instance, Kaunda never conflated socialist solidarity with capitalist predatory plundering relationships! There are worlds of differences between the way capitalists and imperialists relate to other countries and each other. China, for example, never ordered the Zambian government to institute austerity, remove subsidies on cooking oil, petrol, diesel, paraffin, newspapers, and books and so on in return for anything. China never demanded that Zambia unbundles ZESCO, and the government sells it, and so on. China never demanded that the government sells ZAMTEL in return for a bailout. China took a very long-term view and recognised that the country would be around even 100 years from now, if all Zambians did not perish from their poverty, and related to Zambia on a strong and mutual foundation of south-to-south solidarity.

In short, Mbeki effectively told Zambians that the real heroes of Africa are the Kaundas, Oliver Tambos, the Julius Nyereres and other great pan-Africanists who never pandered to outside forces, not the black African puppets, muppets, lackeys of the Brenthurst Foundation who are either already in power or are being sponsored into power elsewhere such as in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, or Tanzania. When you are President of Zambia, Ghana, or Tanzania, being a genuine pan-Africanist is not a choice. It is a matter of heritage because you are heir to pan-Africanist luminaries such as Kaunda, Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere. But the President of Zambia today is more comfortable in the company of the Oppenheimers and their agents in the Brenthurst Foundation whom he has honoured.

We know that the Brenthurst Foundation and their agents were not happy with the excellent pan-African message that Mbeki, who enjoys considerable respect among most Zambians, delivered in Lusaka and were keen to hoist their own African collaborators on us, as our heroes. We should take time to explain how those awards are linked to that lecture. It is worth reminding anyone who may have forgotten that despite being present at State House in Lusaka, the President of Zambia stayed away from Mbeki’s lecture on Dr Kaunda, a man he claims to love, respect and adore very much!

The President went to launch a book of his private white friend, Mr Greg Mills of the Brenthurst Foundation, in South Africa, using taxpayers’ resources. In attendance at that meeting were some of the people the President is now honouring as “continental democrats”. The President then went to the European capital, Brussels, to address white people using taxpayers’ resources.

Yet the same globe-trotting President could not attend a lecture in honour of Dr Kaunda delivered in his own capital city by the most prominent and highly respected Pan-African statesman alive today. Mulungushi International Conference Centre is literally minutes away from State House, where he was earlier meeting, with much fanfare, white people led by Samantha Power, the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development!

If the KK lecture was delivered by Mr Greg Mills or another white person, or if the event was held in London or Washington, we are quite certain that the President would have gone to attend it. But he chose to consciously snub Mbeki’s KK memorial lecture because everything Mbeki said during the occasion, including the point that it is a betrayal of national sovereignty to turn to the IMF for solutions to an independent African country’s economic problems, indicts this President. This is a man who seems to worship whites, who appears subservient to white people. Anyone who doubts this should next notice how he humbles himself, like a kid who has seen candies, in front of whites compared to his demeanour when he is meeting black people.

The snubbing of Mbeki’s lecture was not accidental; it was part of this offensive by the Brenthurst Foundation against anything and anyone who stands in the path of their mining business interests. It was a victory for the President’s white friends in South Africa and Europe, who control him and who may in fact have advised him to stay away from Mbeki’s lecture. Such white people and their agents in the Brenthurst Foundation hate the discourse of slavery, racism, colonialism, neo colonialism and imperialism that Mbeki is known for. They are more comfortable with the discourse of “investors” because they are the “investors”!

Many white people and Europeans hate Mbeki because they see him as an intelligent, articulate African in their language against them – the worst kind of African to them! They prefer dealing with puppets, muppets, lackeys who have no independent mind of their own. They can tell the puppets, muppets, lackeys to confer awards on their co-puppets, muppets, lackeys if only to show that they oversee key decision-making in Zambia today and to counter the progressive message of Mbeki and supplant it with their own right-wing, imperialist narratives, to hoist their own “African heroes” – represented by the three Brenthurst board members who were given the disgraceful honours – separate from everything Mbeki represents.

In retrospect, we think that it was a good thing that the President snubbed Mbeki because this makes it easier to unpack continuously the differences between this President and all Pan Africanist leaders. If he had been present at Mulungushi, his meeting, shaking hands and photo sessions with Mbeki would have been the most reported things from the lecture, burying the important matter of the wide distance between them.

Many Zambians may be poor, but they are a proud and dignified people who hate imperialism and its puppets, muppets, lackeys and tremble with indignation, anger at the subordination of their interests to the white commercial interests of mining lobbies and multinational corporations.

Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe warned us a long time ago, as did another patriot late legendary musician Keith Mlevu, to jealously guard our independence. Mlevu, in addition to singing about imperialism and state capture in his timeless “Ubuntungwa” song, also warned us about the dangers of borrowing in a song entitled “Inkongole tashawama”. Yet today, our leaders are going to the IMF with begging bouls and are foolishly ceding our sovereignty to the same forces that looted our mineral wealth for decades.

We, the heirs to Kaunda, Mlevu and Kapwepwe, must REJECT not just those scandalous awards to the heroes of the Brenthurst Foundation but also the new form of colonisation by stealth and the mortgaging of our homeland to the puppets’ imperial masters. We consider it a betrayal of the vision of our Founding Fathers and Mothers to subcontract the economic development of our homeland to mining lobby groups, Western financial institutions and the same forces who pillaged our mineral resources and from which our independence was won.

Aluta continua!
Victoria acerta!

Fred M’membe,
President of the Socialist Party

Please let Socialist Party argue on the basis of facts and ideas- Nevers Mumba

When, I wrote a response to my dear Colleague Fred M’membe’s write up about the Investiture Ceremony that took place at State House on the 14th of July 2022, I knew that it was just a matter of time, I would soon become the target of a propaganda onslaught.

However, I still hoped that the media machinery of the Socialist Party would rise above the usual petty, personal and frivolous politics and put up an issue based justification for their position in attacking the President’s choice of recipients of the honours. Alas, I have been greatly disappointed again.
Let Mr. M’membe and his team simply answer the simple questions that we raised:

  1. Did HH break the law in choosing the said recipients?
  2. Where the recipients deserving of the awards? Have they done anything in the past in the preservation and defence of Zambia as a functional democracy?

So, before we get derailed by the personal attacks forged by those who have swallowed and internalised the socialist pro-east propaganda hook, line and sinker, let us remind ourselves a few things.

When Zambia was sliding into near civil strife when HH was incarcerated, it took the bravery of some of these very gentlemen to appeal to President Lungu to consider HH as his brother. This is in line with our belief: “One land and our nation is our cry, dignity and peace neath Zambia’s sky”. Lest we forget.

However, I’d like to point out the fact that the genuine progress of any nation is never anchored on leaders teaching their followers to be intolerant and full of hate for other groups of people.

In fact, real progress is dependent on the new generation of leaders and citizens rising above our torn historical enmity and forging new ties based on mutual respect.

This is the only way you get the Mandelas of this world and the only way you produce the Obamas of this world. It is the only way you can even begin to conceive of a path of progress beyond slavery, beyond racism, beyond apartheid and beyond the scars of colonialism.

Creating fresh wounds through cheap ideological propaganda, especially in a developing nation with economic challenges like Zambia, is very easy. It is exactly the same as the attempts to incite hatred on decendants of slave owners or apartheid masters by the new leaders which will not, and does not heal nations and people. The only way to fix our past is to stretch our hands and map out solutions that are mutually respectful and mutually beneficial.

So before you call people names like imperialists, puppets or sellouts, consider these facts. Try and walk in their shoes. It could be that perhaps they have an understanding where we went wrong in the past and they could just have a role to play in our collective resolve as a people.

It is sad that you mention names like Nakachinda and suggest that money was exchanged and that Nakachinda stopped it. This is both careless and reckless. The writer risks being sued for defamation. Please let Socialist Party argue on the basis of facts and ideas which don’t get threatened by other more powerful ideas.

TEACHER UNION CALLS FOR THE PROVISION OF DECENT ACCOMMODATION FOR NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHERS

CHIPATA – 16/07/22

THE Zambia National Union of Teachers(ZNUT) has congratulated the Government for publishing the long awaited 30,496 names of newly recruited teachers.

ZNUT Director of Public relations and international affairs,Godwin Maseka says this will greatly help in bringing about quality delivery of education to our learners in the country, adding that equity and equality are key element in providing the desired provision of quality education.

“As ZNUT, the variance in Teacher pupil ratio was indeed a serious concern to us and when we see the fulfilment of the publication of names of newly recruited teachers, it pleases us and the Nation at large,”he says.

Mr Maseka told FALCON staffer in Chipata that it is incumbent upon the newly appointed teachers to take up the mental and prove to the nation that they mean well, saying teaching is a calling and those who have been given the chance must apply themselves to standards expected.

“We’re aware as ZNUT that housing units may be a challenge but we’re hopeful that the Government, cooperating partners and the labour movements shall embark on a serious drive of engagement so that decent accommodation is built as a matter of urgency.Motivation is key and quality affordable accommodation was one out of many that may constitute motivation”

“Rome was never built in a day and as such, we’re more that hopeful as a union that this opportunity has presented itself with an opportunity to think outside the box so that this challenge can be resolved,”he says.

He called upon all local councils to invest in the education sector through the proper utilisation of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“You and me are aware of the introduction of free education and as such, there is exponential increase of pupil population. This therefore, calls for increased furniture for our learners in our schools,”Mr Maseka says.

He says this was yet another area which requires urgent attention so that quality desks are procured for our learners.

“All education stakeholders should work together to bring about this transformation. Our appeal to our recruited members is that, they must remember that the career they’ve joined requires a lot of serious commitment and that it’s a life long undertaking,”he added.

UNZA DON TO GO IN FOR 15YEARS OR MORE FOR MOLESTING UNZA STUDENT

Court convicts UNZA don for molesting student

By Mwaka Ndawa

UNIVERSITY of Zambia philosophy lecturer Austin Mbozi has been convicted by the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court for sexual molestation.

Magistrate Felix Kaoma said Mbozi’s distasteful act was illicit as the 20-year-old female student he molested did not consent to be fondled, neither was she married to him.

This is in a matter where Mbozi was charged with indecent assault on females.

Mbozi, 52, on September 28, 2020 unlawfully and indecently assaulted a 20-year-old student.

According to her testimony, the victim told the court that Mbozi fondled her waist, breasts and thighs and attempted to finger her after he tricked her that he would offer her a contract as a typist in his office.

In his defence, Mbozi denied assaulting the student. Mbozi who admitted offering the student employment explained that he pitied the victim and only wanted to advance her in education as she was desperate for an international scholarship and he feared that it would cause her trouble.

Handing down his judgement on Friday, magistrate Kaoma said just as Joseph in the Bible was accused of attempting to rape Potipher’s wife and was jailed for the same, in cases of sexual assault there were twin dangers: false complaint and false accusation.

He said every was therefore mandated to warn itself on issues of corroboration to rule out false accusation.

He said evidence also required corroboration to avoid implications.

“There is direct evidence from the victim who said on the material day she was called to the accused’s office to finalise a job offer and they met at Goma field. She entered his office and whilst in the office the accused moved his chair and started kissing and touching her breast and later wanted to touch her vagina but she stopped him and that’s the complaint she had,” magistrate Kaoma said. “In the Zambian society, touching a woman on neck is allowed but touching their breasts and thighs are gross parts of indecency within the meaning of the law.”

He said the victim’s evidence corroborated with the testimony of other state witnesses who confirmed that she was distressed after Mbozi molested her.

Magistrate Kaoma said Mbozi did not dispute all allegations of offering the victim employment and inviting her to his office, and the locking of the door but only disputed the evidence of sexual molestation.

“I found it strange that a male lecturer would be locked in the office with a girl who is not his relative. He went out and deliberately locked the door when he came back because he had an ill motive. The job offer was not real,” magistrate Kaoma said.

He rubbished Mbozi’s claims that he was framed by the victim because he once accused former president Edgar Lungu of causing the death of fourth-year student Vespers Shimunzhila.

Magistrate Kaoma ruled that his excuse of defaming Lungu lacked the iota of evidence and there was no connection between the two indecent acts owing to the period in which they occurred.

“It is not in dispute that the victim did not tell the accused when they first met that she was a student at UNZA because she was not comfortable to tell a stranger what she was doing. The indecent assault was unlawful because the victim was not married to the accused and they had just met for the first time. There was no proof from Mbozi that the complainant had consented,” said magistrate Kaoma. “In the circumstances, I am satisfied that Mbozi committed the offence of indecent assault against the victim. I do here find him guilty of the offence and I accordingly convict him.”

Magistrate Kaoma committed Mbozi to the High Court for mitigation and sentencing as the offence attracts a minimum sentence of 15 years.

This sentence is beyond the powers of the Magistrates’ Court in meting out punishment.

Ricky Martin denies shocking claims of incestuous relationship with nephew

0

Ricky Martin’s lawyer has debunked rumor of a romantic relationship between the singer and his nephew after a restraining order was filed against him earlier in the month.

Ricky was reportedly issued with a restraining order earlier this month following a domestic violence incident in Puerto Rico.

Media reports recently suggested that the accuser, who filed the order anonymously, was in fact Martin’s 21-year-old nephew, who reportedly alleged they had dated for seven months.

According to El Vocero, a Puerto Rican newspaper which claimed to have viewed the report, the singer’s nephew allegedly claimed they broke up two months ago, but Ricky did not accept the split and was seen loitering near the accusers house at least three times.

The musician’s brother Eric also allegedly told Spanish publication Marca on Friday July 15, that Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, Martin’s 21-year-old nephew, is the alleged victim.

Martin’s brother also allegedly claimed that the Grammy winner “exercised physical and psychological attacks” on Sanchez, with whom he was in a relationship for seven months.

Martin previously denied the domestic violence allegations, calling them “completely false and fabricated.”

The “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer’s lawyer, Marty Singer, however told Deadline in a statement on Friday July 15, that Martin never had “any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew.”

It read;

‘Ricky Martin has, of course, never been — and would never be — involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew.

‘The idea is not only untrue, it is disgusting. We all hope that this man gets the help he so urgently needs.

‘But, most of all, we look forward to this awful case being dismissed as soon as a judge gets to look at the facts.”

Martin is currently facing another lawsuit by his on-again, off-again manager, Rebecca Drucker, over alleged unpaid commissions to the tune of $3M.

Drucker claimed in the suit, which was filed in the Los Angeles Central District Court on June 29, that she helped protect her former client from a “potentially career-ending allegation” in September 2020, but did not elaborate further on the incident.

I GAVE BIRTH BUT DON’T KNOW FATHER OF MY TWINS BECAUSE MY HUSBAND’S BEST FRIEND AND HIS SON F*CKED ME AROUND SAME PERIOD.

Hi, please keep me Anon.

I’m house wife in my late 30’s & happily married. My hubby & I have been through thick & thin together & I love him. He takes good care of me, loves his kids, supports my family & his.

In 2018, we threw his birthday party at our house. His best friend, who happens to be our neighbor, with his wife & the boys helped me prepare for his b.day surprise. My son & our neighbor’s son are also best friends. They both turned 19 the previous week & my youngest was 6 at the time.

My hubby was a bit drunk & later passed out when the guests started leaving. I didn’t drink too much. I went outside for a moment to take fresh air. I was standing at the balcony & his best friend touched my ass. I thought it was inadvertent & didn’t react. He didn’t say anything either. He starting smoking cigarette & I asked why he wasn’t leaving now that everyone is going home. He told me he will be going soon & went inside.

After few mins he came back & touched me again. I knew he was up to something but I kept quiet. Later I went to the kitchen & to my surprise he followed me & squeezed my ass with one hand & my tits with another from behind. To be honest I kinda liked it but I told him he should go, & he went to the party room. Later when he was leaving with his wife he looked at me and I winked at him.
I spent the night thinking about what happened.

After a week, when my hubby is at work & boys in school his friend came to my house. The door wasn’t locked & he came through. He found me in the kitchen & I was kinda surprised. Asked him why he came & told him he should knock first. He didn’t say a word. He knew hubby was at work. He tried to kiss me & I said no. He told me “I know you want to feel me, I knew you liked it last time”. I told him that was a mistake.

He said I shouldn’t worry & it will be our secret. I didn’t say anything.
Then he kissed me & started touching me. I tried to stop him but I couldn’t. Before I knew it he swiped my panties to one side & he was inside me. I stopped opposing him. His di*k is much bigger, I couldn’t do anything. I told him am not on pills & he shouldn’t cum in me. He said he will pull out. He didn’t. He came inside me. He carried me to the bedroom & fu*ked me 2 more times. I reminded him to pull out or put condom, but this man kept cumming deep inside my pu*sy. He totally had his way. I was in shock. I took shower & that night I made love with hubby.

His friend came again after 2 weeks, he made sure hubby was not home. I didn’t let him inside & I told him to just go. He stopped for a while. Then one day, after like 2 weeks we suddenly met in downtown, we talked about it, that we should keep it cool. Moments later he booked a hotel room & fuc*ed me for hours. Then he came after a week to my house he had his way. This continued till 2019. I managed to stop it for a good 6 months, & he also stopped bothering me.

Fast forward last year in 2021, my son’s best friend started spending much time around & he was complimenting me now & then. At first I ignored it. Then around March hubby wanted to visit his family & I told him I wasn’t not feeling well to travel, so he took the kids. They stayed for 5 days.
To my surprise my neighbors son would come & play with me all day. That day he offered to stay around for the evening & I told him he should go to his house. Little did I know he already told his family he was going to stay at his classmate’s room for a couple of days.
As it was getting late, I told him he should go & he told me he already told his parents he will be out for days.

Hmmm, this boy was serious. He was kinda ho*ny & asked me if I could let him do me just once. I slapped him. He managed to hold my hands & kissed me. At that moment I started thinking about the way his father handled me. Yohhh this boy.. he just took his d*ck out & started rubbing it against my ass. Just like his dad, his di*k is also much bigger than my hubby’s. I told him he shouldn’t say a word about this & to sleep on my son’s room. Truth be told, deep down I wanted him to f*ck me, but it just felt too awkward. I went to my bedroom, but left it open.
He followed me in my bedroom & he undressed me & we did it. Yohhhhh he f*cked me all night. The next day he never went outside. We did it in the shower, kitchen, everywhere. For 3 days this boy was f*cking me whenever he felt like it. I also enjoyed it.

When my hubby came back we stopped it for a while.
And on my hubby’s birthday party last year when my husband got a little drunk, his best friend fucked me upstairs in the shower. I didn’t even try to stop him. & After 3 days his son also f*cked me multiple times at my house & they don’t even know. I never told anyone.
Problem is I got pregnant & I didn’t know who the father is. I knew it wasn’t my hubby’s but I didn’t know if it was my hubby’s friend or his son (My son’s friend). This year I gave birth to twins & guilt is eating me up. What should I do pls?

Just advice, no insults pls…

EU delegation pay courtesy call on Zambia’s Chief marketing officer President HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has thanked the European Union (EU) for its continued support to Zambia in various sectors.

Speaking yesterday at State House when the EU President, Charles Michelle and his delegation paid a courtesy call on him President Hichilema expressed delight on the invitation to the EU Parliament a few weeks ago in Belgium, Brussels.

He said that Zambia is looking forward to tapping in the Global Gateway funds to improve various sectors such as Education, Health and Infrastructure.

“We look forward to discuss more especially on how we can access the Global Gateway fund which is exciting to us and we know that it is part of the bigger pool for many other countries,” said President Hichilema.

The Head of State added that Zambia will continue to strengthen ties and relations with the EU in order to accelerate access to the funds and development of the country.

“We are delighted to have you and your team here in Zambia. We want to express our appreciation to you for inviting us to address the EU Parliament.

I must say that we enjoyed ourselves there,” said President Hichilema.

And President of the European Union, Charles Michelle assured the government of strengthened ties.

Mr. Michelle also congratulated President Hichilema for delivering a powerful speech at the EU Parliament few weeks ago in Brussels, Belgium.

“It’s my pleasure to meet again, we were together in Brussels a few weeks ago.

I would like to congratulate you on your powerful speech in the European Parliament. We sincerely would like to strengthen ties with you .We are convinced that there are many possibilities to deepen and strengthen partnerships with Zambia and the European Union. We also think that in challenging times we will have the liberty to come through,” he said.

Let Us Not Demonise Foreign Investors Or Partners Based On Our Ideological Differences Or On Conspiracy Theories- Dr Nevers Mumba

0

By Dr Nevers Mumba
BRENTHURST FOUNDATION:

LET US NOT DEMONISE FOREIGN INVESTORS OR PARTNERS BASED ON OUR IDEOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES OR ON CONSPIRACY THEORIES.

We wish to offer our opinion on the spirited submission my dear brother and colleague Fred Mmembe has made concerning the Honors given to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Elen Sirleaf Johnson and Ernest BAI Koroma.

First of all I wish to state that in a democracy like ours, the views of Socialist party President Fred Mmembe are respected and welcome. My interest in responding, however, is because I also wish to use my constitutional liberties to comment, not necessarily on Mr Mmembe’s views but on the Investiture event of July 14th 2022 itself.

Let me start by answering some specific questions:
Did President Hichilema break any law in conferring this honor on the three?

Statutory instrument No. 3 of 2003 reads in part:
“NOW THEREFORE, I, LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA, SC, President of the Republic of Zambia, do hereby declare and proclaim that- (a) the First Division of the Order of the Eagle of Zambia shall be awarded to ZAMBIAN and FOREIGN HEADS OF STATE and FORMER HEADS OF STATE..”
This law therefore confirms that a president has power to endow such an honor on any former head of state from any where. Just as our own late Kenneth Kaunda was honored in various countries like Namibia to mention, but one.

The next consideration is to whether the honored three deserve what they received. Again this, is the prerogative of the President. However, it is a known fact that both Presidents Obasanjo and Koroma have played a role in Zambia’s smooth transition of power and together with President Elen Jonson stand out as champions of democracy globally. These have not only been honored in Zambia but in many other countries of the world.

The fact that they are board members of Brenthurst Foundation does not diminish their vast contributions to humanity. It’s the three that were honored and not Brenthurst Foundation.

But let us also discuss the accusation that The Brenthurst Foundation is a neo colonial organization wanting to exploit the mineral resources of Zambia, Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone. First I wish to declare my interest here. Although I am not a board member of Brenthurst Foundation, both Jonathan Oppenheimer and Greg Mills are good friends and colleagues of mine and I have great respect for them. My interaction with them suggests, and remains on the basis that they remain committed to helping Africa maintain working economies. This does not mean they do not have any side which may not be acceptable to some individuals. There is no perfect human being, just as there is no perfect human institution.

What is at play here is an ideological battle.
The UNIP government espoused a mixed economy and a non aligned policy. They dealt equally with both the East and the West during the Cold War. MMD moved more to the West, while PF moved to the East and embraced China as the closest partner. The UPND has warmed up to the West like MMD but still maintaining healthy relations with the East. To accuse any of the administrations of being puppets would be unfair and an insult to our dignity and intelligence as a people. To trade and do business with any block does not make you a puppet. This is where I differ with my brother Fred. Zambia is both old and intelligent enough to work with the West in order to serve our national interests. We didn’t call PF puppets of China, but we believed that China could support our infrastructural projects, and they did. UPND as the new government has continued to commission all the Chinese projects. It would be unpatriotic for UPND to say they will destroy all the projects done by Chinese “puppets.”

This week President Biden is visiting Saudi Arabia, a country that US has publicly condemned for abuse of human rights, but American interests have made this trip possible. That’s how the world works. It’s through networking and friendships created on the back of our national interests that drive global governance.

While the 2021 UPND victory falls squarely on the resolve and resilience of ZAMBIANS themselves, it is also a fact that the journey and the struggles of being in the opposition in the African set up takes you through some of the most challenging paths. Sometimes it is only on the back of similar minded friends from outside the country that you can navigate the darkest of days.

Here is the truth. Whether Brenthurst Foundation helped sponsor the UPND campaign or not, we don’t know, but what we do know is that President Hichilema knows who voted for him and his responsibility is first to the Zambian people. If he can squeeze any benefit from his relationship with the Brenthurst Foundation for Zambians, he would have served the Zambian people well. If the Brenthurst foundation chooses to invest in Zambia as a result of their connection to President Hichilema, even this will be a plus to the Zambian people. We cannot demonize investors based on our ideological differences.

President Fred Mmembe is a socialist. Socialist states will support his run for President when that time comes. If he were to win the Presidency, Socialist groups and organizations will fill Zambian Hotels. That’s how it works.

The goal should never be to undo what non- Socialist governments achieved. Successive governments must build on the gains of previous governments. That’s how you build nations.

No, there was nothing wrong in honoring the three revered former Presidents.
No, there was nothing wrong in welcoming Brenthurst Foundation to State House.
No, there was nothing wrong with President Mmembe giving solidarity to the Russians and collaborating with Socialist Countries.

We all have friends and we all have leanings. No one has a right to dictate to another their choice of friends.

WHAT CORRUPTION ARE YOU FIGHTING, MUNDUBILE ASKS GOVT

…..as he exposes white collar corruption in UPND

Lusaka…. Friday, July 15, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

Leader of the opposition in Parliament Brian Mundubile has exposed the alleged white collar and well organized corruption in the UPND government.

Contrary to what President Hakainde Hichilema’s stance has been on corruption, the $100 million recent “single sourced” contract to build infrastructure under the ministry of health has left Hon Mundubile and other sections of society wondering if the frowning at the said fight.

Speaking at Parliament today, Hon Mundubile said the contract which he alleged that was shrouded in secrecy has been cancelled.

The cancellation was on Friday last week announced by Vice President Mutale Nalumango in Parliament during her question time.

The Lawmaker however said despite the cancellation, there are consequences that the act will have.

“What are the reasons for cancelling this contract? And we also know that that cancellation is going to attract costs in terms of damages. We already know. We have information now that the contractor has written to government asking government to give reasons why they terminated,” he said.

“You must understand what is going on here. This is all designed. This is designed corruption, white collar corruption where now he has done the first step of writing to say can government explain why this contract was terminated.”

Hon Mundubile further explained that the contractor is likely going to walk away with money he hasn’t worked for if he goes ahead to claim damages.

“Now in any given contract you will find that there are provisions that safeguard parties. If one party terminates the contract without following the provisions of that particular contract, the other party pays damages. So in this particular case let’s say this contractor claims damages of up to 30%. He will walk away with %30 million for nothing,” he said.

“Firstly, the procurement was questionable and we questioned it on the floor of the house. We were told that this particular contract was cancelled. Why it was cancelled? Reasons are not given. Now this particular contractor because it is well arranged, it is organized crime, he is now claiming damages.”

He however charged the silence by the Head of State in the matter has been loud adding that he expected the President to go public and denounce this particular contract like he has done in all other cases.

Hon Mundubile said people trusted the UPND when it came to the fight against corruption.

The Lawmaker warned that “when you begin to hear someone repeat something, calling people uyu nikabolala, begin to be suspicious.”

He asked the New Dawn Administration what corruption they are fighting.

“The President came to Parliament and said he will start naming and shaming. This contract has happened under his charge, nothing has been said. The silence of the Republican President is very loud in this particular transaction. The question is why?”

“This should have been of interest to the President. Who procured this contract? Who are those people and why are they not being named? Why are the DEC and ACC not being instructed by the President as his usual approach,” he said.

Socialist Party Will Ensure Every Zambian Has At Least The Basic Needs To Live A Good Life- Fr Frank Bwalya

SP WILL ENSURE EVERY ZAMBIAN HAS AT LEAST THE BASIC NEEDS TO LIVE A GOOD LIFE

…as there is an urgent need to narrow the gab between the rich and the poor – Fr Bwalya

Lusaka…. Friday, July 15, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

It is against God’s will that a few people should have everything that they have – Imbwa shabo shilelya polony na T-Bone while the majority of the people are wallowing in poverty, former Zambia’s High Commissioner to Australia has said.

Fr Frank Bwalya, the Socialist Party (SP) Member of the Mobilization Committee explained that socialism is about equal distribution of wealth.

Fr Bwalya said this when he featured on Phoenix FM Zambia’s “Let the People Talk” program today.

In demonstrating what really socialism means, the SP Member of the National Council gave an example of what happens at household level as the foundation of the ideology.

“It is against God’s will that a few people should have everything that they have. Imbwa shabo shilelya polony, T-bone, kwaisa nama biscuits, nga baya ku holiday, basha mu hotel….and then the majority of the people are wallowing in poverty. Socialism is against that. So tell me, who among us the way we were brought up in our families did not encounter socialism in that sense,” he asked.

“These are the foundations of socialism as far as I am concerned. Wafuma ku sukulu waisa, wasanga balateka ubwali so that you come and eat with your siblings but you are the first one to come, our parents would say wait for your siblings. Why were our parents saying that? Because they knew that in each one of us, there is this selfishness and sometimes lack of consideration.”

Fr Bwalya said the opposition SP wants to ensure that there is control so that every Zambian has at least the basic needs to live a good life.

He also explained that the household example he gave does not make the distribution of food equitable.

“There are two of your siblings absent and you are the first one to come home then you cut the nshima meant for three people into half. That does not make it equitable. There are five pieces of meat, you get four and leave one for your two siblings saying they will use soup,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fr Bwalya said Dr Fred M’membe, the SP president is a man who loves the people.

He said a party that is in a hurry to form government so that they have access to national resources and enrich themselves would not structure their party in the manner SP is doing.

“Way before I joined the Socialist Party, I had a meeting with Fred M’membe and I looked into his eyes and still saw the man who loved people as he was saying and articulating the Socialist ideals…. that intelligent person,” he said.

“A party that is in a hurry to form government so that they have access to national resources and enrich themselves, they would not structure their party in the manner I have come to learn the Socialist Party is doing. Nobody joins SP and is immediately unleashed. There is a process of preparations. The socialist ideology has to be inculcated in you; justice, equity, humanism, patriotism, service, loyalty, discipline, peace – these you must live by as values and that is what you should be known for.”

M’membe urges AU to discuss AFRICOM office in Zambia

M’membe urges AU to discuss AFRICOM office in Zambia

By Fanny Kalonda

SOCIALIST Party president Fred M’membe hopes the AU summit in Lusaka will discuss the setting up of the AFRICOM Security Cooperation office in Zambia.

In a statement yesterday, Dr M’membe recalled that he recently urged President Hakainde Hichilema to “rethink and cancel the AFRICOM agreement that has been signed [as] it is not in the interest of the Zambian and African masses”.
“As the AU summit meets this week, we hope that the setting up of the AFRICOM Security Cooperation office in Lusaka will be tabled for discussion,” he wrote on his Facebook wall.

On June 24, 2022, Dr M’membe wrote a letter to President Hichilema on the setting up of the AFRICOM Security Cooperation office in Lusaka. “We still look forward to his response. In this letter, among many other concerns about this cooperation, I brought to the President’s attention that: It is now public knowledge that the United States Department of Defence (DoD) is about to set up an Office for Security Cooperation at the Mission in Lusaka and that he has been party to its facilitation. …That We MUST NOT trust any military arrangements made with the US on our continent. The imperialist interests of the US cannot be similar to those of the African masses. If anything, it is a new form of enslaving our continent and he should not go down in history as having been a party to this,” Dr M’membe said.

He noted that since gaining independence in 1964, Zambia has followed a non-aligned approach in its military doctrine and foreign policy.

“This is about our existence, dignity and sovereignty. Non-alignment has allowed Zambia to avoid the trappings of big-power global politics. The relative peace our country has enjoyed is to a large extent because we chose to be non-aligned in a world that was dangerously divided. As the geopolitical landscape moves towards a multipolar world, it becomes even more important that Zambia acts with great caution in how it navigates this landscape. The step he has taken on AFRICOM is therefore retrogressive and has the potential to diplomatically isolate Zambia in the region as well as endanger the security of our people in the medium and long term…” said Dr M’membe. “In that letter, I sincerely requested Mr Hakainde to 1. Rethink and cancel the AFRICOM agreement that has been signed. It is not in the interest of the Zambian and African masses.

  1. Make the signed agreement available to the Zambian public so people can make an informed judgment about what it entails.”

Harassment Of Opponents Pure Cowardice- Edwin Lifwekelo

Patriotic Front Party
Lusaka
Saturday, 16th July, 2022

Statement for Immediate Release

HARASSMENT OF OPPONENTS PURE COWARDICE

THE UPND government should know that its continued harassment of political opponents using state machinery is tarnishing the country’s image to the outside world.

It is a sign of cowardice for the New Dawn administration to continue targeting opposition leaders and those linked to the last administration.

The harassment of the family of the immediate past President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu and those perceived to be a threat to the current President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, is embarrassing.

Zambians are demanding answers to the harsh cost of living this government has created as a result of its incompetence.
The abuse of law enforcement agencies especially the Investigative wings is eroding public confidence in these important governance institutions.

We demand genuine and honest investigations and justice instead of the selective and malicious fight against corruption which is only targeting the UPND’s political foes.

While Mr Hichilema is boasting to the outside world about Zambia’s democracy and claiming to unite the country he is sending state agents after his opponents under the guise of fighting corruption.

How can only one group of citizens mainly from the same region be the only suspects of corruption?
Now the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has seized assets of Zambian born South African business tycoon and philanthropist James Ndambo claiming that they are under investigation.

It has become so predictable. Some Zambians had joked about the likelihood of security wings going after Mr Ndambo for embarrassing the New Dawn government with his generosity and heart for the poor.

The UPND must know that all these sideshow will not give Zambians any relief from the pangs of hunger and abject poverty it is subjecting them to.

We are aware that the UPND is scared of the PF and will spend the next four years scheming to cripple the opposition but it is a waste of time and resources.

ZANASU Press Statement On The Successful Recruitment Of 30, 496 Teachers In Zambia

ZANASU PRESS STATEMENT ON THE SUCCESSFUL RECRUITMENT OF 30, 496 TEACHERS IN ZAMBIA

Friday, July 15th 2022… Lusaka

The Zambia National Students Union ( ZANASU) and it’s affiliate members wishes to magnanimously congratulate the new dawn Government for the successful recruitment of teachers across the country accounting for 30, 496 from the initial 30, 000 that was promised.

Firstly, it is important to understand that the pupil to teacher ratio was worrying before this exercise and indeed left much to be desired because most teachers had a load of work to meet everyday, compromising the quality of service delivery.

ZANASU recognizes the efforts this government has so far put in the education sector. From the free Education policy to the recruitment exercise. This makes us believe that our call for Government to invest in education is yielding results, we believe investing in education can be the best investment for any developing nation.

ZANASU further recognizes that this recruitment will take over 30, 496 youths off the streets into the productive industry and contribute to this country’s GDP every year by this employment created. We wish to unreservedly applaud Government for creating this huge opportunity for young people. However, we must strongly recommend that the recruitment process should not be a once off event but should be done every year because the population is increasing and there are new graduates every year on the professional market. We also appeal to government to look beyond the civil service as it is not sustainable in job creation.

We will be failing in our duty if we do not take cognizance and urge Government to further pay attention to tertiary Education.

Our tertiary Education is still in Limbo; Exorbitant fees, poor infrastructure, poor Education curriculum, poor accommodation and many other challenges requiring Governments urgent attention.

We have engaged and still engaging the Government in providing solutions through progressive dialogue to ensure that these challenges are addressed as soon as possible.

ZANASU and it’s partners remain vigilant on defending students’ rights and indeed protecting the plight of young people in the country as per founding principles.

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF ZANASU,

Mambwe Isaiah Bwalya
