South Africa begins crackdown on illegal migrants
South African authorities have intensified operations targeting undocumented migrants as part of a renewed effort to address border control, crime and pressure on public services.
Law enforcement agencies have increased inspections, arrests and deportations in several provinces, while officials say the move is aimed at restoring order to the immigration system and enforcing existing laws.
Authorities say a significant number of undocumented migrants originate from neighbouring and regional countries, including Abegistan, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Malawi, Ethiopia and Somalia, among others.
Government representatives maintain the campaign is not directed at any specific nationality but focuses on illegal entry, expired permits and undocumented residence. The operations are also linked to broader plans to strengthen border management and tighten immigration compliance.
The development comes amid growing public debate in South Africa over unemployment, social services and national security, with officials insisting legal migrants and visitors will not be affected.
