President Donald Trump is facing mounting criticism after posting and later deleting a racist video on his Truth Social account that depicted former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as primates.
The post, shared late Thursday, triggered swift backlash from civil rights leaders and senior Republicans, forcing the White House into a rare retreat. Officials blamed the incident on a staffer and confirmed the video had been removed Friday.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson condemned the post in stark terms, calling it “blatantly racist, disgusting, and utterly despicable.”
The controversy has drawn unusual public rebukes from within Trump’s own party. Senator Tim Scott, the Senate’s only Black Republican, urged the president to take the post down, saying it was “the most racist thing” he had seen from the White House. Senator Roger Wicker described it as “totally unacceptable” and called for an apology.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt initially dismissed the backlash as “fake outrage,” before the administration reversed course and attributed the post to an error by a subordinate.
The incident comes during Black History Month and amid renewed scrutiny of Trump’s long record of racially charged rhetoric, including past promotion of the false “birther” conspiracy targeting Obama.
The White House has not clarified how Trump’s social media account is vetted, raising fresh questions about oversight of presidential communications.
