BRE CONDEMNS ATTACK ON TONSE ALLIANCE LEADERS, CALLS FOR PEACEFUL CAMPAIGNS IN BAROTSELAND
The Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) has expressed deep disappointment over the reported attack on Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu in Luampa District, describing the incident as regrettable and contrary to the values of peace that Barotseland is known for.
Speaking through the Ngambela, the BRE said it was disheartening that reports of political violence had emerged barely a week after leaders from different sectors gathered for prayers for peace at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Mongu, where the Litunga and the Royal Establishment strongly appealed for peaceful, violence-free elections.
The Royal Establishment noted that the Litunga, through the Ngambela, had publicly urged all political parties and their supporters to reject violence before, during and after the August 13 General Election, emphasizing that peace and unity must prevail regardless of political affiliation.
According to the BRE, reports indicate that Brian Mundubile and members of his campaign team were allegedly attacked and had stones thrown at them while campaigning in Luampa District. The Royal Establishment said such incidents undermine democratic principles and threaten the peaceful atmosphere that has long characterized Barotseland.
Following the reported violence, the BRE has directed the Western Province Provincial Administration to take appropriate measures aimed at preventing further acts of political violence and ensuring that all political parties are able to conduct their campaigns peacefully.
The Royal Establishment stressed that democracy demands tolerance of differing political opinions, adding that mature politics should be guided by respect, dialogue and coexistence rather than intimidation or violence.
The BRE further stated that it considers any acts of political violence as inconsistent with its repeated appeals for peace, noting that all political players are welcome to campaign in Barotseland regardless of party affiliation.
The Ngambela reiterated that the Barotse Royal Establishment remains non-partisan and serves as a parent to all political parties and citizens without discrimination. He emphasized that every eligible political party and candidate has a constitutional and legal right to campaign freely in any part of Zambia, including Barotseland, in accordance with the Electoral Code of Conduct and the Constitution.
“The people should be allowed to listen to every candidate and make their own decision at the ballot box,” the Ngambela said, adding that voters alone have the democratic right to determine who should lead the country.
The BRE also expressed concern that the reported violence occurred in Barotseland, a region widely recognized for its peaceful traditions and hospitality, saying it was unfortunate that such incidents had been reported there.
The remarks were made when concerned senior citizens from Mongu paid a courtesy visit to the Kuta to express concern over the reported attack on the Tonse Alliance leaders in Luampa District.
The Barotse Royal Establishment has since appealed to all political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns, respect one another’s constitutional rights and ensure that the electoral process remains free from violence and intimidation.
